Language trends you dislike

A lot of different points of view actually are those things. Every “opinion” doesn’t deserve respect. There’s a lot of insult to hurl because there’s a LOT of those things you list out there.

Recommended reading for people who have issues with vocal fry.

The way we speak and the words we use represent our culture, geography, family makeup, exposure, and influence so I don’t really find anything unacceptable. Except maybe “make America great again.”
Who decides?

I don't like the "Make up your own words" trend
Aks or Axe instead of Ask
Mines instead of Mine
Moms instead of Mom
Also:
When people feel they are cool because every other word is profanity
Saying "Could care less" when it should be "Couldn't care less"
Heigth instead of Height
When you tell someone something they like and their reply is "That's what's up"

Trends I dislike in language?

People using the term "reach out" instead of contact.
People using the term "Karen"
People using the phrase "Mansplaning"
People using the term "under housed" instead of homeless
OMG! "Reach Out" is my #1 right now!

I hear that phrase countless times a day. Sometimes just for my own personal amusement I abuse it just to see if anybody notices... so far nobody has said anything because it gets so overused anyway, people think I am being series.

"I reached out to Mary and she said that she would reach out to John. I will reach back out to Marry tomorrow to find out what John told her".

What would you use in place of "reach out"? It's usually used in a work context where you don't feel the need to specify if the form of contact will be email, phone call, Slack message, chat in the hallway, etc.

If they not feel the need to be specific, just use "contact". "Get in touch with" is less desirable, but there has to be a way to avoid saying "reach out". Instead of "reaching back out", you could "follow up". You could also "get back to me" or "let me know".

It would almost be OK to say it occasionally, but it is being used so much it is ridiculous. My original example was not an exaggeration of our "reach out abuse" at work. We need some variety.

Not a fan of “fire” to describe how good a food item is.

When kids, we’ll say 21 and under, say this it’s annoying, but they’re kids - no big deal. When adults say it, it drives me crazy, but then again, watching adults trying to look and sound like teenagers is always annoying to me.

I guess maybe the way so many online stories try to grab your attention by saying the information they contain is “historic”, “classic”, “epic”,”life-changing hack”, etc. I saw one a few weeks ago about getting sticky substances out of jars. I forget the exact wording of that headline, but the big revelation the author had was to use a spatula!

Speaking in a physical position so that someone can barely hear you: head turned away from them, mumbling.
For me it's using your office voice out on the work floor. I answer with "4:30" every time my coworker/coordinator stops by and asks me something. Like it's 118 decibels out here standing in the middle of 4 blowers pushing plastic pellets through aluminum pipe. Elevate the voice a little bit.

"I talked to Mary and she said she'd get a hold of John. I'll catch her tomorrow to see what he said."

Not specifying the form of contact, but seems it would be normal for "I talked to Mary..." to be whatever form you used. Talked for actual face to face contact, email for email, text for text, etc. Seems that would be the normal way to state that to me. The rest is just in general but the beginning of the statement "I talked to Mary..." I would say it with the method of contact without thinking about it.

I am guilty of using "literally" and "like" incorrectly and abundantly. It feels like I have been working on this terrible habit for like literally 100 years. Since I'm turning 40 in a few short months maybe this teenage habit will eventually die.

Also, "circle back" and I agree with "Karen"

I'm sure there are more, but I don't know what the young whippersnappers say these days.

Not sure if you mean this, but in videos on the Tube, "hack". "20 hacks to make your life easier!" and they show someone getting the sticky substance out of a jar as one of the "hacks".

A "hack" has 3 meanings. It is modifying something to do something else or do something better. 2 - breaking the code and changing the programing of a device, phone for example, to get to unlocked features. 3 - a mechanic, contractor, worker who takes extreme shortcuts resulting in shoddy work. A mechanic who ties your muffler up with a coat wire and charges you for a fix is a hack. Someone who knows you can just put a pry bar in the suspension to lift up the upper a-arms to pull the ball joint vs disassembling the entire hub and disassembling half the suspension saving 2 hours of work is not a hack (although the way they are paid and you get charged, you will pay for that 2 hours of labor that wasn't performed.)
