I'm just curious if anyone has anything that's been working for them. Lately every time I've been looking down at my lap I've been getting depressed. :sad2:

Lots of squats. All the time. I do them during commercials - an evening of that and you'll feel it!

Oh, and to keep it budget related....THEY'RE FREEEEEE! :rotfl:

I teach spinning and I have thighs of steel! (underneath a small layer of fat)
Seriously -you can't really spot reduce. If you need to lose a little weight -diet and exercise will help. If you want firmer thighs (not smaller thighs) squats like the PP suggested. Bike riding is good -even walking

Gotta agree-- I was paying a personal trainer for months, who said squats are the #1 exercise for basically everything. My problem is that KNOWING and DOING are very different things...

I do the Leslie Sansone "Walk Away the Pounds" DVD's, and I've noticed a big difference in my thighs, among other body parts! I have the 1, 2 and 3 mile workouts. I like that she uses weights for part of the work out.

I also had my first yoga/pilates class tonight, and I am already hurting! My legs feel like rubber! It was quite a work out!

I swear by Leslie:love: . Her videos helped me lose 20 pounds.:woohoo: I also have Tamilee Webbs "I want that body" That has helped me firm up. I actually have definition in my torso.

Hi All,
I am a personal trainer as well as a group fitness instructor. I have to agree, you can't spot reduce. Cardio and diet will help rid your body of fat but you can firm and shape with strength training. Nothing will shape your thighs like walking lunges....Ouch!:scared: :scared:

Also, not sure if you have access to stairs, but use them. Avoid elevators. When I was working in the office, I worked on the 6th floor...and I would walk the stairs on the way to work and then take two mini breaks during the day. I would take the elevator down and walk up. As a bonus, we had one elevator that went a floor lower, to the basement...if that elevator happen to choose us, we would walk up from the basement.

I moved the sewing machine and the computer that I use to design my DIS stuff upstairs, so I'm running up and down stairs all day. I've lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks! I only wanted to lose 12, so yippy!

my friend told me once "the best exercise is walking away from the table"

totally true. No exercise and I'm down to 123lbs from 136lbs in about 4 weeks time. Drink water all the time, lots of soups, love air-popped popcorn with seasoning, and veggies.

between work and kids, I have no time to exercise, but the diet is completely within my control and anyone can do this if you put your mind to it.

Of course, this plan does not include DDP :), so no free dining for us in August since all my hard work would be for nothing.

DH and I are doing "Bodypump" classes at the Y. Lots of squats and lunges with weight added. It is really great and more work than I'd ever do on my own!

Does anyone have a website to recommend with example pictures? I dont really know what a walking lunge is or how to do it? The last thing I want to do is hurt myself.

I'd like to know, too, because when I've tried lunges, they HURT! Maybe because I'm so out of shape?:confused3 Are they supposed to hurt?

Did you Budget Board regulars know about the W.I.S.H. Board on the DIS? It's a great place to find out about healthy eating, exercise and positive lifestyle changes. It's a great community of very supportive people. I'm going to move this thread over there so that it gets the attention that it deserves.

The biggest mistakes people make with lunges are keeping their stance too narrow and their feet too close together. You want to stand like you have your feet on railroad tracks, and you want that back foot WAY back - so you are on the ball of your foot. You shouldn't wobble this way, it is a firm stance.

Then, go down like you are a horse on the merry-go-round, straight down like there is a pole through you. DON'T lean your weight forward - your front knee needs to stay back behind your front toes. Your legs should bend at 90 degree angles.

This will really firm your legs and your butt. Once they get easier, you can put the front foot up a couple of inches on a step for a challenge, or hold weights in your hands.

Squats are also great: just sit back like you are about to hover over the potty:rotfl:

Squats are great for you legs and your entire body in general. If you want to get in shape, and can only do one exercise, it should be squats.

Exactly. Your first movement is back, instead of straight down. Just like you are sitting in a chair. Then push up off your heels, not your toes.
