Ladies, do you think a red or green top would go with these pants or would just a white or black top look best?Screenshot_20241012_230503_Walmart.jpg

Oh I struggle very much with gray pants. To be safe, I'd do white; however, both red or green *could* work depending on the shade of it and the style. Those two colors not not ones I wear often. If I was going to try a color with them, I'd try a deep plum.

Are looking to wear them to a holiday party? Is that why you would like to wear red or green? I agree it depends on the shade. I don’t own a lot red as I find it a hard color to wear with other colors, I have a dark cranberry top I wear with jeans. I would wear white, black, plum, or pink with those pants.

I would not, I like bright holiday colors with black or denim and let the bright color take all the attention. The sophistication of the gray would throw off the jolt of fun color IMO, like a wet blanket on the YAY.

In general, I do gray with cream but otherwise would do same as Love Daisy.

I agree that it depends on the shade of the red or green. I've gone to work conferences where the powers that be wore tomato red shirts with gray pants..you definitely could see them in the crowd.

If you opt between black or white tops instead, I always go with black, but that's because I'm chronically clumsy and always manage to spill something on myself.

I put your quesiton in AI to see what it says as it gives images. Here's what it came up with:

The pants in the image are gray with a subtle pinstripe pattern, offering a classic and versatile style. A few colors for tops that would complement these pants well are:
  1. White or Ivory: A crisp white or off-white blouse creates a clean, professional look, perfect for formal or office settings.
  2. Light Blue or Pastel Shades: Soft blue, blush, or lavender can add a subtle pop of color without overpowering the outfit.
  3. Burgundy or Wine Red: A deep, rich color like burgundy would add sophistication and contrast to the gray.
  4. Mustard Yellow: For a bolder look, mustard yellow can bring warmth and energy to the outfit, adding a modern flair.
  5. Black: A black top would give a sleek, monochromatic vibe, making the outfit look polished.
I’ll generate an image with one of these options for you!

A professional woman wearing gray pinstriped pants with a burgundy blouse. The blouse has a classic design, and the outfit is suitable for office settings. The look is elegant and balanced, with the burgundy top providing contrast to the gray pants. The woman is also wearing black heels to complete the outfit.

I agree that it depends on the tone of the red or green. A deep red or deep green that looks a shade or more darker than the pants would do. A pastel pink or mint green a couple of shades lighter would also work. The primary color shades of red and green would not work as well, in my opinion. I also think you need to match whether the gray is a warm gray or a cool gray. If it is a cool gray, you don’t want a shirt with a yellow undertone to it, which some reds and greens have. You want something with a touch of a blue undertone. If it’s a warm gray, then a shade with a yellow undertone works much better. I wouldn’t wear cream with a cool gray, but I would wear it with a warm gray.

I have the same issues when wearing a beige or khaki colored pants, especially when it comes to warm and cool undertones clashing. Just because it’s a neutral doesn’t always mean it’s easy to wear. . .

Not a lot of help here as my basic wardrobe is neutral with accessories adding pops of color. Still, red or green would work since the bottom is a neutral.

See this is why I am not "adventurous" with my bottoms.
I understand that's not a patterned pant so its relatively "neutral" but to me Its not haha.
I'd go with black, white, grey...
Where as if they were just a grey pant I'd say where ANY color on top.

I agree. Grey is a neutral to me, so any color could work. I have a grey cardigan, I wear pretty much any color top I want with it. That said, the picture seems to show a greenish tint to the grey. If the pants really are green grey, I personally wouldn’t wear red. Yes, those are Christmas colors. I just don’t wear outfits that are red & green.

The answer should take into account your coloring as well as the pants hue. If your coloring is darker (brunette or dark hair, tan skin) I'd say a burgundy. If you are fairer (lighter hair and skin) I'd say a clearer wine color.

I looked at the pic before I red your post. The first thought that popped into my head is that the pants should be paired with a bright red top. Burgundy would work if you want a more muted look, but gray is already a neutral muted color, so bright red would be a nice bold pop.
