Ladies- Just say NO...

I agree, which is why I mostly go with generic men's t-shirts. Even at Disney World, I found a really cute t-shirt I liked but alas, it was the "ladies cut" and I just won't wear those, so I got a more general one that was a men's t-shirt even though I really liked the other design.

I mean, really if I can put my hand on the inside of the shirt and see it even though the shirt is BLACK....there is a problem there. It drives me nuts enough that no one cares that their bra straps show anymore....I certainly don't need the shirt so thin that everyone can see the entire thing or basically why bother wearing the shirt at it's so thin it's basically see-through.

Oh well....I'm just an old fuddy duddy so what do I know. ;)

I absolutely HATE all the SUPER LONG AND SKINNY shirts that you see everywhere nowadays. I cannot wear them, period.

I don't like the "fitted" tees that totally cling to your body either, but I like regular ladies tees...ones that have a nice flattering cut yet give you breathing room and don't show off every bump and fold. I hate regular t-shirts.

I'm wearing a slightly scooped tee from Kohl's (Croft and Barrow, I think) right now, and I love it! It's a smoothly knit, medium weight cotton (this one has a sort of paisley design), is slightly fitted, and comes down about three inches below the hip bone. Very flattering, very comfortable, very affordable. Comes in V-neck and solids, too.
I sound like an ad, huh?

There's a difference between tight & fitted. My tees are fitted in that you can see the shape of my body but they are not so tight you can read the tag on the back. I have found that while I normally take a size L in regular tees (so I can get the fitted look) I often need to go up to an XL or XXL in the tees labeled as 'fitted'. Which is fine as no one sees the tag!!
I too have a not small chest & if I wear a loose tee (or just about any loose item of clothing up top without a fitted under layer [like an unbuttoned shirt over a fitted tank]) it hangs straight down from my 'shelf' & makes me look huge. If I wear a fitted tee it curves under my shelf & gives the impression of a slimmer waist. This is also why I invest in good bras. Lifted 'girls' means more space between chest & waist & makes you look longer & leaner.

AFA where to shop, I tend to hit boutiques (you can get good deals I promise) & places like the GAP & Torrid. Torrid can be a bit goth but you can find some great stand alone pieces that work with a less head banging lifestyle! :p

I don't mind t-shirts that fit well but I hate the clingy material. I like the old comfortable cotton that is so hard to find nowadays except in the men's department. The clingy, stretchy stuff looks bad on almost everyone IMO.

I put my hand through shirts, too, and if it's totally see-through, I won't buy it. Who wants to wear a shirt that is so thin that 1) you can see a bra through it 2) you can see that roll of fat people have under their bra in the back 3) you can see muffin-tops and other flab 3) it's so thin that you know it won't last long before it gets holes in it 4) you have to layer it-- it's hot and humid outside so why would you want to wear two shirts, plus a bra.

I think manufacturers are just getting cheap, cheap, cheap, and making it look like this is the latest style just to save money. I find it annoying to shop for T-shirts. Many of them are so low-cut that it requires a tank underneath, and again-- it's too hot to layer in the summer (even with a very thin tank..I've tried it). Some of these shirts are so extremely narrow that they are no wider than a babies onesie-- really, compare them. Not everyone is that narrow.

ETA: I've found 'fitted' styled T's at Old Navy that look decent. However, for some reason, I find that ON's T's tend to stretch out a LOT during the day, ending up looking frumpy after a few hours. I wish they didn't stretch out so much; their jeans do that, too.

I wear fitted but not super tight. The boxy tees make me feel manly. And like someone else said, the boxy square tees go straight down from the bosom shelf making me look huge.

Even bigger women can wear fitted it they go up a size so it won't cling and show every bump. But you'll look better than when wearing the boxy long square mumu tee. Give it a try with a larger size.

:thumbsup2

And then there are the empire waisted shirts that make everyone look pregnant.

I agree with this, too. I have several, and they are cute, but on my 'bloated' days, I sure can look pregnant! Needless to say, I don't wear them unless I'm having a 'skinny' day!

We really need some new designers. I don't like clothes shopping anymore. Jeans are too low-cut, shirts will fit great except be tight in the sleeves (not like I have huge arms) or made for large chested women, pants length is hard to get perfect, etc.... I should just go naked. Not.

Also disagreeing. I look frumpy in a regular shirt... I buy them fitted and look just fine. The key is to buy the RIGHT SIZE fitted shirt. :thumbsup2

This. It took me forever to figure out my bigger shirts made me look...well... bigger. Fitted doesn't = tight. If it fits like a sausage casing its time to go up a size.

Kohl's (if you have one) has some great v-neck Ts that aren't square but also aren't clingy, I love them!

Thanks! I will check them out.:goodvibes

I agree. I do not want to wear a stocking shirt!

This sums it up best. This is exactly what I mean. I wouldn't mind as much if a shirt was fitted vs. super thin and clingy. No matter what size you wear they never look right. I have tried going up a size or 3 and I still think they look terrible on me. Oh well.

I like having t-shirts that are fitted but I wear a cami under them for a more streamlined look. However, I don't have back fat or front fat for that matter so that might be why I like them. I actually think the big baggy shirts contributed to women putting on weight. It's easy to do when you can hide it under clothes.

I'm with ya OP! I used to be able to pick up a nice plain lady T very easily. But now they are super tight and paper thin. Yuck!

And yes, not talking about the big boxy t shirts. Still shaped, just some fabric weight and a little room please!

Well then I guess I am one of the few. I do not think these shirts look good on most people. I don't wear frumpy t-shirts. I wear v-neck shirts that hit at the hip bone. They are very neat looking and flattering to my shape. Of course I don't think tight and stretchy are an easy look to pull off. I guess if you have the confidence or the body for it then God bless. I just wish that there were more choices for those of us that don't like them. The choices seem to be teen clothing/fitted stretchy and "older" clothing. What about those of us in between? :confused3

I totally agree with you. Now that I'm slimming down a bit, clothes shopping isn't getting any better. :confused3:laughing:

*Stares down at fitted Dr. Who tee*

Um, considering I'm WEARING what I consider to be a very cute fitted tee right now, I guess I'd have to disagree.

I would be very sad if all the retailers ever sold were big boxy tees. I don't like the way they flap around my waist and bunch up when I try to tuck them in.

I don't dislike fitted shirts but I HATE cap sleeves. Living in Florida and being in and out of office buildings, I tend to sweat a lot. With cap sleeves, it seems to be worse (and more obvious, which is so attractive!)

If you are slender and without excess fat on your torso, then those shirts are great!

Oh I love the "fitted" shirts. Walmart has a line of tops/blouses/shirts by RIDERS that are all fitted and they are lovely. They have a bit of stretch in them and they always look nice on no matter what size you are! Check them out, OP! :thumbsup2
