Day Twelve - Pirates, Rabbits, and Dole Whips

We awoke on Monday to music playing outside and the sun shining brightly. I put on my Dis Creations T-Shirt again and soon we were headed to the Magic Kingdom. There are some new additions to the Magic Kingdom since the last time I had visited and I felt it was time to go again.

Yay!

Time for some magic!

Now that I had my park ticket, it was much easier to get into the park. And after taking the ferry over, we simply went through bag check and then swiped our tickets to get in.

Can you find the Hidden Mickey?

We headed to the Tiki Room first, and sat through the show, enjoying the cool interior of the building. We could already tell it would be a hot day and we were trying to enjoy as much air conditioning as possible.

After watching all of the animatronics in the Tiki Room, Carol and I continued to meander through Adventureland until we reached Pirates of the Caribbean. What Disney trip would be Disney without at least going on this ride at least once?

Yo ho, a pirate's life for me!

I found the lineup for Pirates to actually be quite long for the ride it really is, but it did move quickly. I spent the entire lineup looking for hidden Mickeys and my efforts were not in vain. I found a Mickey head shaped lock!

Found it!

I really do enjoy Pirate of the Caribbean, even if it’s not one of the most exciting rides in the park. I’ve enjoyed it ever since I was a little girl! It’s family friendly, and with just a few upgrades, can also be considered related to the movie franchise.

I do wonder though… how many younger people realize the ride wasn’t inspired by the movie, but rather the other way around?

In fact, as a side note… one of my favourite video game franchises was somewhat inspired by this ride! I’m a big geek and I’ve been playing the Monkey Island games since I was a little girl. The first game was released in 1990, so as you can imagine it was definitely inspired by the ride and not the movie. :)

As a big fan of Guybrush Threepwood, I enjoy floating through this ride thinking of rubber chickens with pulleys in them and pirate insult sword fighting. Oh, how the movies would be even more entertaining if they had those!

Carol and I really enjoyed the ride, and I kept my eyes open, taking in all the scenes. I must say, this ride has been well decorated. And I thought the dog holding the keys while the prisoners reached for him was cute.

We eventually had to climb out of our boat and back out into the hot sunshine. It only made sense to keep on walking… straight into line for Splash Mountain, another classic and favourite!

This warning was everywhere

As was becoming my habit, I searched high and low for hidden Mickeys and try as I might, I don’t think I really found any. Although I’m pretty sure I’m starting to see them where there really aren’t any. For instance, on this birdhouse… it looks like there is a Mickey head to me!

Do you see what I see?

The line for Splash Mountain, as always, was one of the longer ones. But they kept us moving rather quickly, and I really did enjoy looking at all of the decorations. I snapped photos here and there of my favourite things, because that’s what you do with an expensive camera and time to kill!

When it was close to our turn, I ended up putting the good camera back in the bag, and wrapping it with my own personal rain poncho, figuring I would like to get wet, but the camera probably didn’t. I ended up grabbing my cheap Powershot that’s on its last legs and taking pictures of a few favourite things while on the ride as well.

No worries, folks. The camera was safely stowed away long before we reached the best part of the ride. And down into the briar patch we went! Carol got wet, but unfortunately, I was only splashed a little bit. There really had been no worry about the camera bag, but I always say it’s better to be safe than sorry.

We got off Splash Mountain and decided to backtrack, as we both desperately needed a snack. So off we went in search of the… Dole Whip!

We stood in the sweltering sun, waiting for the line to move forward, and I swear to you I could feel myself melting. It was that hot on that Monday. But eventually I finally got to the front of the line and excitedly ordered a pineapple dole whip.

This is the sort of thing I’ve read about on more than one occasion on the Dis Boards. Time and time again I have been told that you simply did not miss out on trying a Dole Whip, at least once. Because if you tried it once, you’d be hooked for life.

Seriously.

Mmm

So I finally had a Dole Whip in my hands, and it hadn’t been very expensive! Carol and I found a spot to sit in the shade and I tried my first spoonful of Dole Whip. And you know what? It really was pretty good! Definitely one of the best soft serve ice creams I’ve ever had! However, I’m warning you now: I preferred that lemon sorbet I had at Ghiradelli’s even more. But, considering the price difference, I better have liked it more!

After eating our Dole Whips we eventually headed back across the park to practically walk onto Space Mountain.

Castle and Balloons

The line was so quick, I really didn’t have time to even look at the different things in line. We sped right by the games and waited perhaps ten minutes before we got on our spaceship. And then we were blasting off into Space Mountain!

Space Mountain has not always been a favourite ride of mine. When I was younger, I hated it. I distinctly remember holding on for dear life and wishing I had opted to stay with my Aunt Linda instead of going on the thing. It was dark, it was fast, and I was a skinny enough child that I felt myself floating out of my seat from time to time.

Also, I really hated it when my hair whipped me in the face when I was a child. I really, really hated it. My father had a T-Top Camaro, and I dreaded the days when he took the T-Top windows out and I was subject to the roaring wind whipping my hair out of my ponytail so that it would lash me in the face.

Space Mountain really wasn’t the sort of ride I would like at that age.

But as an adult? I consider it a tame rollercoaster, something that I’ll enjoy riding, even if I’m not getting a great thrill out of it. It’s especially more enjoyable now that my hair is no longer so fine and instead of whipping around into my face, it just turns into one giant knot behind me, and I can enjoy the experience without the stinging pain.

I always leave Space Mountain feeling exhilarated, and this time was no different.

i found the hidden mickey in that first photo where you asked, where's mickey!!
