Kitty's having surgery today :-(

My little siamese, Blythe, is having surgery this morning. Her gums have been so inflamed the past few weeks and 2 weeks of antibiotics didn't seem to help much. They are going to do deep cleaning, get a better look and possibly do a biopsy. I never had a pet have surgery before and it was really hard to leave her there with the vet. Please pray or think good thoughts for Blythe, that she will be okay in surgery and that they will fix whatever's wrong. Poor thing was so scared when I left her

Aww---she'll be okay. My kitty had tooth and gum surgery about 2 years back and many teeth removed despite the fact she is young. Has a Congenital Gum disease ...she came home and was fine!!!! Blythe will be too...

Blythe just turned a year old in June, so they are skeptical that it is gum disease. I guess if it was congenital, it would fit. I am just praying it's not a tumor of some sort. She is a tiny little girl, but surprisingly, she eats like a pig! Anyway, I am just a worried "mom". I asked the vet tech if they would call after surgery and she said they don't usually call unless there is a problem, but they could if I wanted. Guess who will be getting a call?

Mine was 1 when she was diagnosed with it and 2 when she had the surgery so you never know! Is it in one area? For mine it was pretty much all her gum area and many teeth involved...

It was on the one side more than the other. They just called and she is still in surgery. The vet tech said that there is very little underlying support for the teeth and LOTS of pus. They think they may have to extract most of her teeth! Now, I feel guilty, because this cat LOVES to eat! Even with her inflamed gums, she has been eating dry food(in addition to the wet food I give the cats) and anything she can find on the floor. Yesterday, I actually caught her with a chicken leg bone she stole from the trash and she had already chewed it in half! I am just thinking she will be miserable when she can't eat everything the other cats eat!

How many teeth does your cat have left? Can she eat anything besides wet food? THey are going to call me when she is out of surgery.

Well wishes to your kitty. I'm always sad when animals have to have medical procedures...they're like babies and don't understand what's going on so they get so scared.

Your kitty will be fine, and I'm sure you'll give her lots of love when she comes home to make up for any fear/discomfort she goes through.

She copes just fine and yours will too!!! Where there is a will---there is a way!!! She even loves Pizza crust!

She lost all the teeth, except her canines and incisors :-( Hopefully, she will be like your cat and be able to eat anything. DId your cat have any more medical problems after the dental surgery? Make sure they give you something for pain should she need it? Mine told me that there were enough pain-meds in her system for that day and truly-she didn't need any more. Animals cope much better than we humans!
Just maybe in case of?

My Vet told me that he had some troubles getting the complete roots of all the teeth. You might want to ask about that too? And that down the road--she MIGHT have some issues if infection were to set up in those roots but she has been perfect ever since. When she has her annual check up he always checks her mouth thoroughly and it's just fine. She used to have bad breath from her teeth--now that too is sweet!

They made it sound like it was ALL her teeth, except the canines and incisors. I guess I will know more when I pick her up. I have a lot of questions, including whether this could be from calicivirus. When I got Blythe and her brother, they had had their vaccinations, but must have been carrying it on their fur. My oldest cat got it and had terrible ulcers on his tongue. COst me $400 to get him well and the virus recurs, and was $150 the second time around. My other cat got it too, but it was on her nose and she recovered without vet care. I am wondering if Blythe had it before her vaccination and it caused this mess. The rescue organization did not tell me they could bring this virus in.

I will make sure to get pain meds. When my oldest had the mouth sores, it made a big difference in getting him to eat.

I'll update when I get her home.

He said usually, it takes a lot of force to pull cat molars, but her were only connected by the gums. He said the rest of the connecting parts were just GONE. Her teeth were actually perfect, but evidently this was a gum issue. He does not think it was cancer, and has sent off a biopsy to see if we can find out what it WAS. He said we will have to watch the canines and incisors to see if they are going to be okay or not. They may have to be pulled at some point if they become a problem.

As for kitty, she seems none the worse for wear! I got out a can of wet food and was carrying her to another room(so the other cats wouldn't swipe it) and she kept swatting at the can. She ate about 1/2 the can and would have eaten more if I let her, LOL. She has pain meds through Wednesday, but after that he said she should feel much better.

Sounds like a Congenital issue perhaps...malformed teeth?
At least if there was little tugging she won't hurt as bad as if there was a lot of effort getting them out!! Good for her...cuddles from me too. Sweet baby--hope she feels better every day! Have a glass of wine now!

I'm glad Blythe made it through surgery. She's young, so she'll be resilient and adaptable. She may be forced to eat soft foods from now on, but she'll adjust.

Bring up with the vet how you've caught her eating weird foods, also how she's been eating like crazy. Maybe soemthing she ate gave her a bacterial infection or parasites that they wouldn't normally check for.

Sorry about the credit card situation. Just hang in there. I remember your mom saying to you you shouldn't have gotten all the kitties. But, in years to come, I know you will say you can't imagine your life without all of them.

Well, what's funny is we went to the foster house with one kitten in mind. We had seen him on the rescue's website. His name was Beauregard and he looked like 1/2 Siamese, 1/2 tabby, very cute markings. Well, when we got there, Antonio just came over and laid on my son's lap and he fell in love. I decided to get two, since I didn't know how quickly my other cats would accept a new kitty. Blythe was in love with Antonio, so I got her with him. She was not supposed to come home with us, and now she is the one with issues, LOL. I guess I can think of it as maybe someone else who got her wouldn't have spent the money and just let her suffer.

Oh, and she doesn't eat anything that's not food. Before the surgery, she would eat cheese, peelings from a potato, yogurt, etc. I don't think it was from food. I think she had the calicivirus and I didn't notice because she didn;t show any signs other than stank breath.

How is Blythe doing?

Blythe is doing so well and its only been a week! Boy is she happy to be off antibiotics! She is eating wet food three times a day when I am home, twice when I am not. She is also eating cut up meat of all kinds when we have meat. She has not been messing with the dry food too much, but she IS eating Temptations, which are a crunchy cat treat. She just gums them and swallows.

She seems to be much more loving, and probably feels a lot better. I feel bad that the dr said this was a bacterial infection and was probably going on for MONTHS. I really did not know she was in pain because she ate so well. Her biopsy came back as normal tissue, so it looks like it was all from whatever infection she had.

I made an appt for her yearly exam little early, so they can recheck her mouth as well. The dr hopes that she will keep the rest of her teeth if we keep a watch on her for a few months.
