I have to agree with Liz here... although I would say the iPad/3G-wifi Kindle is the best combination. I travel too often for wifi-only.

In December the iPad/iphone will be getting an App that allows it to download library books DIRECTLY TO THE DEVICE rather than having to download it through the Overdrive program on your computer. I like that option for color travel books and recipe books, etc. Not for novels, obviously, but great for those things.

The iPad is really only an indoor/no bright lights device. We use ours like a portable TV and stream movies and TV shows to it. I used it while I waited for my car to be serviced at the dealer the other day and the hour I waited flew by. I would have used my Kindle to read but I was browsing for black Friday deals online instead.

I think the iPad/wifi only Kindle is the best combination right now, if you have the budget for it.

I agree that 3G is best if you have the budget for it - but since it was being bought for a 12 year old girl, don't you think the wifi will serve her just as well? By the time she needs/wants 3G the technology will have progressed beyond what we have today, I'll bet!

I meant in general... it's all about us, right? ;)

Helpful hint for you nook owners that seldom use the wifi. The nook has a new software upgrade you may have missed (like me) : version 1.5

It made quite a few small improvements, and two big ones that fixed my only two complaints I had about my nook:

Page turning is now almost instant.
You can now organize your library into "shelves". (Similar to the Kindle's "collection", I think).

Also, someone asked the question if nook supported page-sync over multiple devices: I assume it didn't before, because it's one of the 'new features' of the new 1.5.

pondering getting one...I Really Like that you can get Books from the Library.....Is this only with the Nook....

Nook and Sony. The Sony has the better screen like the Kindle. Also, the iPad will be capable of downloading library books soon.

Okay, non-techno dumb question here. We don't have either of the devices, but DW is "hinting" that they are really cool, which means that I had better get her one for Christmas:teacher: Okay, question, if I purchase a Kindle (or Nook), can I go into ANY bookstore and download books for a cost or do I have to go to the place that the item was purchased?? In other words, would I have to go into or online at B&N to get books for a Nook or could I go in to a Books a Million or another store of the like?? Also, if I had a Nook, could I go online to Amazon to download books or is it B&N exclusively??

I have the newest Kindle, and I can't get books at Barnes and Noble. But there are so many on amazon, and there are some other websites out there too, but I haven't done that yet. The newest Kindle has the newest E Ink, I believe it is called pearl, and I swear it is clearer than a book! I just love it. I chose the Kindle over the Nook because I love amazon and I am not a fan of touch screens (I still have a blackberry curve too, haven't converted to the Droid or iPhone!) I would say go hold and play with both of them and then decide. The new Kindle is also smaller than the Nook. I was in B&N the other day with my Kindle and the Nook guy wasn't very happy that an older couple came in and were talking to me about my Kindle, and then to him about the Nook, and they left there to go buy a Kindle!!! :)

They are each exclusive for their particular books - you can only download B&N books on a Nook, and you can only download Amazon books on a Kindle. Other than the free things B&N sometimes offers in store, there really isn't any :"going into the store" - it is all done wirelessly from the company. You don't even need to go to the computer on my Kindle - I can be sitting in the den, decide to search for a title in the Kindle store, hit a button, and be reading a new downloaded book in less than 60 seconds. I still find that amazing.

Both readers will accept thousands of free books that are available in the public domain from many other sources. Project Gutenberg is one and there are many others. These books, usually free, are old enough to have had expired copyrights and they are compatible with both types or readers.

You pretty much have to just jump in with both feet and choose. No matter which you choose, you're going to be happy. Kindle owners like their Kindles, Nook owners like their Nooks. I looked and compared and finally just bought the Kindle. I love it and haven't looked back. I most likely would have felt the same way with the Nook.

this is an elementary question, I am sure. I am considering an e reader for my college bound senior. I "think" most campuses have WIFI everywhere. So, I am wondering why would I need the 3G? He would be downloading at college or at home. Since this is not something he mentioned he wanted, I want to spend basic dollars not for the best or most features. He is enough of a gadget electronic lover that he will enjoy this device. He already has ipod touch, so he can check his email that way.

However, you can download books from the Borders and Sony book stores onto the Nook (just not vice versa). I still prefer my Kindle over my Nook but I do have to admit this is a nice feature.

Does he have any desire in traveling outside of the country anytime soon? If so you may want to consider the Kindle with 3G. I have read about a lot of people using their Kindle as a way to stay in touch back home will in a foreign country. The Kindle works internationally and doesn't incur any roaming charges like a cell phone would.

Otherwise you can probably get away with the WiFi only and be just fine.
