It's pretty cool. I'm not completely sure about the backlit screen...but love the size. It's so much larger than an ipod touch...but not as bulky as an Ipad.

The screen is clear. full touch screen. the kids books and audio on it are FABULOUS!

really debating returing my NOOK (That hasn't arrived yet) and buying a color nook.

PS I saw this at Books-a-Million. Surprised to see it at and B&N competitor.

I also looked at the Nook Color last night. I wanted to compare the regular screen to the backlit screen. I thought the backlit screen was fine. You can get an anti-glare screen for it like you would put on your ITouch.

I told my DH................"that's the one!" I liked the size & the features.

I also told the sales clerk at B & N that if they would come out with an e-reader that you can turn the backlit screen on & off it would be the perfect device!

Well i just found out DH and i can share our library on our Nooks cause we are on the same account. So when I down load he can read the books and when he downloads I can read his books which is awesome because we do read some of the same authors :) YAY!

I've checked 3 local Targets and one local Staples. I came back empty handed each time.

They can't keep the $139 Kindle in stock; it's just flying off the shelves.

I just ordered it from amazon.

I have a Kindle 3G and Wifi(the latest one) and love it. I can read library books on my iPad, and like a PP mentioned, they aren't necessarily available when you want them anyway.

I happen to own both.

I love love, love my Kindle :lovestruc. I tolerate the Nook for it's library capabilities. If the Kindle is ever able to put library books on it the Nook will be out my door in a heartbeat. Everything is just much easier to use on my Kindle.

Same here! My dad came over and gave me money for my bday to get the Kindle. I was so excited but every store I went to, Target, Staples, Best Buy, all had sold out. They said they can't keep it on the shelves but they had no idea when more were to come in. So, I just ordered it from Amazon.

Hrm I'm on tr nook colorrightnow hrm typing is good but akward. I find thr backlkght super bright. Ill be testing. It out for a few days before I'm convirted.

I have a Kindle:

I like reading and that is all I use it for. You can surf the web with it.

My husband is a gaget buy and has a Nook: I love my Kindle but I might have gotten a Nook if I would have known more about it and it was out when he got me the Kindle:

He can obviously read. He can also, borrow library books, surf the web, etc. And some of the pictures are in color.

So I've been playing with the nook color for a few days and I'm not convinced. The typing is so so. The magazine views feel awkward. Screen keeps changing size on me. I also found it a bit frustrating that if you load your own digital magazine subscription it shows it grainy and doesn't integrate it with its article view. Over all I think it has potential if they offer some apps and update the firmware to allow for lower brightness settings.

Its an interesting system but I still think I'd be better of with an ipad.

So are there any rumblings of the Kindle ever having library capabilities? The cheapskate in me leans toward the Nook for just that reason. I'm not one to read books over & over so buying them makes no sense to me. I'd rather pay a yearly fee to something like FLP and be able to borrow books.

Is it better to get it from a store like Target or Staples if one can be found over ordering it from Amazon? I have not used Amazon so did not know if there was a drawback. If not, I will just go ahead and order one.

I order from amazon all the time and have never had a problem.

Meredith, go ahead and order from Amazon - you will be so pleased. Yesterday I was at Best Buy and there were lots and lots of different kinds of ereaders - except the smaller Kindle which was sold out (they did have some DX models in stock.) This close to Christmas you will be hit or miss as to whether stores will be able to keep Kindles in stock.

Ordering from Amazon directly is a breeze and a great idea - I would never have a Kindle product I didn't order directly. I like being able to call Customer Service directly instead of having to return a product to Target if I have an issue. (And for the record, I've been a Kindle owner since June 2008, have bought 5 different Kindle models, and have never had a single issue with any of them. Best product I have ever bought!)

Thanks so much for the quick replies. This is for my 12 year old daughter who loves to read. It just seems a lot of people keep talking about stores not having Kindles in stock but if Amazon has plenty, why would it matter? I will be ordering one soon.

My hubby and I both got kindles last Christmas - hubby did have an issue with his screen his summer - it went half black and unreadable while we were on vacation but amazon customer service was amazing and he received a brand new replacement within days of us returning home.

Meredith, I'm not sure "plenty" is accurate this close to Christmas. They can and do sell out for the holidays - they did the first year (2007) and they did in 2008 as well, I believe.

Go ahead and order it now - if you have any issues they will honor a return until the end of January 2011. They are selling very, very quickly and I would not want to wait until Black Friday, etc to try and snag one.

Setting up an Amazon account is very easy, or you can call and order it over the phone. Your daugther is going to love you!!! Get her some kind of case as well, to protect the screen. And an Amazon gift card!!!:rotfl:

In the interest of disclosure, I own a Kindle and I love it.

Yesterday I got an email from B&N about the 'rave reviews' that the Nook Color had received. Out of curiosity, I went to CNET which they didn't mention and read something that I found really surprising....the battery life is only 8 hours!!! :scared1: Went to the B&N website and confirmed it. 8 hours! :scared1:

Yep, all of the LCD readers are goign to have a pretty poor battery life. It's just the nature of the beast.

I can read on my backlit iPad if I adjust the color to sepia (not white) and turn down the brightness a little. I still prefer to read fiction on my Kindle, though, by far. The iPad is great for magazines and other color apps. I think the iPad/wifi only Kindle is the best combination right now, if you have the budget for it.

Never hesitate to order anything from amazon. Amazing customer service. Plus, you won't pay tax or shipping charges for the Kindle.
