Is there a waiting list for popular books or are all ebooks available all the time?

There is a waiting list just like at any library, but you can download it instantly as soon as you get the email that it is available. A couple days ago I got an email at 1am that a book was available from my local library. I downloaded it right then and there and started reading. I've been 10th or 11th on a waiting list for a book and got it in a couple weeks.

As for a previous poster's question about bookmarking pages, I've always been able to pick up where I left off even if I switch between books.

There is a waiting list. Imagine 1000 other new Nook owners browsing for the same ebook.

The library feature is great but it's not for people who want to read the latest bestsellers right away or at their leisure. With the library you wait on the list until they notify you the book is available and then you have to read it within the lending period.

I have a Kindle and I download library books to my computer. I transfer them to our Sony e-reader or convert them from epub to mobi to read on my Kindle. I understand Amazon will feature lending on the Kindle before the holidays. I'm sure Adobe and Amazon will come to an agreement over epub library books in the near future.

I'm surprised that none of the comparisons on this thread discuss the screens beyond whether they are backlit or not. The quality of the new Kindles and the new Sonys are so much better than the current Nooks. I have not seen the color Nook, but we recently bought an iPad to stream movies throughout the house and it has Kindle and nook apps. Fine for reading briefly indoors but so NOT a quality reading experience outdoors or near windows in daylight. Love the device but it has serious limitations.

A question for nook owners (since Im a kindle gal). The kindle has the ability to bookmark across devices and you can pick up wherever you left off in a book regardless of what device your reading. For instance, I can begin reading on my kindle, and pick up the same book on my ipod touch later. The software will open the book where I left off on the kindle. I can even open kindle for pc on my computer and sync to wherever I left off on the last device. Can nook do this with similar apps?

I'm not sure, since I mainly bought the Nook to read on the Nook. Other apps are backlit and wouldn't be good to read on. The Nook is comaptible with Droids. Not much more I know than that.

Maybe someone else knows.

I also wanted to add that anyone who got either, likes what they chose. I don't think you'll go wrong with either IMO. I really was set to get a Kindle, but B & N had those refurbs for a really good price and I tried it. I love it a lot, but I would love the Kindle just as much I suppose. Our library does have ebooks so that's an options for us, but it's not the main reason we got the Nook. Price won out.

I guess I didnt make my question clear. I know that you can switch between books on the same device and automatically go to the page you left off at. What I want to know is whether you can sync devices (ipod touch, pc and ereader, etc.) so that no matter which device you pick up you will automatically go to the page you were reading on the last device you used. With the kindle I can have kindle for pc, kindle for ipod and my actual kindle ereader all registered to my amazon account. If I happen to leave my kindle at home I can still pick up my ipod touch and begin reading where I left off without searching for the page. Can the nook do the same thing?

I have a Kindle and I understand your question! No clue about the Nook.

OP..there is a ton of info out there about all the devices...go to the stores that carry them and test them. hold them...see how you like it...this is what I did and I went for the Nook because I didnt like the buttons on the kindle..now that might sound stupid to someone else but that was my choice. your choice might be different

My library does not offer ebooks so I guess that's really not an issue for me.

I haven't read through the whole thread so someone may have already commented on this, but if you live in PA and have a library card for your local library then you can get a free membership to the Free Library of Philadelphia which has a large and growing selection of ebooks. If you don't live in PA, you can still get a library card for $15 a year. I check more books out of this library than I purchase. It's a great feature of the Nook.

The 1.5 software update allows you to sync across all devices.

You can check email anywhere in the world on the Kindle 3G. Not so with the Nook. It's a VERY basic web browser but it's free and no need to be anywhere near an accesible wifi network. I have my email and some other sites saved as favorites so I can easily navigate to them when I need to. Also, the Kindle has its own email address. I've emailed boarding passes in PDF format to my daughter's Kindle while she was traveling so she could get through security without having to stop at the counter.

The Kindle's battery life is about a month. The Nook is about 10 days. The Kindle holds 3500 books, the Nook 1500. The Kindle lets you organize your reading material into folders, the Nook does not. The Kindle's screen sharpness is far superior to the Nook. The only other e-reader with the same screen is the newest Sony.

I have a booklight for my Kindle. I read it in bed, on planes, you name it.

Subscribe to Kindlenews on twitter and they send out notices of free books every day that you can download for a limited time (but save to read forever).

Wouldn't mind the option of sharing books with a friend but, from what I've read, that's very limited with the Nook.

And yes, I read in bed all the time. (That's my main reading time.) So does that rule one out?

Wondering what effect B & N's selling out will have on Nook.

Internet cap...can I check my email with either of these (3G ver.) if I needed to? (That would definitely be a nice feature.)

Cost of books definitely holds weigh in my decision too.

Thank you. I realize that its not a feature that everyone wants or uses but it is one that I happen to like. I used travel guides on my ipod touch while touring rome in september. It was much easier to pull up rick steves' maps and restaurant guides on a little ipod touch than on a kindle. I was able to go directly to the page that I'd jusr read on my kindle the night before without missing a beat. Nice to know that the nook is capable of doing the same thing!

It's a hard decision but I think I'm going with Kindle. (Thanks for the CR tip...did find the article.)

ACK!

I have a $50 gift card and a $50 bill (birthday gifts)-- I would like to use them at Target so my husband doesn't recognize the charge for the Kindle.

Two different local Targets were all out of the $139 Kindle!!!

I'll give it until the weekend, then try either Staples or Amazon.

To whoever asked.... I've noticed longer wait lists with the Philly Library in the last few months.
Most books I've been looking at (romance and fiction) have a wait list of 5-9 people. the newer releases are at about 10-15 people. (about 10-45 weeks for a book!!!)

I am hoping they expand a little more to handle all the new readers :)

But until then...I've been looking for free books online.

Could you use your gift card and $50 bill to purchase an Amazon gift card at Target and then just order the Kindle from Amazon. Your DH won't see a Kindle charge and if you indicate it is a gift, Amazon will ship in a plain box.

Amazon just announced they will offer Kindle book giving for anyone with an email address. It will start in early December and when you purchase an e-book on Amazon, the "Give as a Gift" option will appear. All the recipient needs is an email address. Very Cool. I like the idea of being able to buy a specific book for someone else with a Kindle.

You are brilliant!!! Thank you!!!

If they don't have one in stock tomorrow, that's my plan!!
