I don't know what the deal is lately, but I have encountered more kill-joys this week than I ever have. You know...the people who have to be reasonable at all times, no nonsense, no joking around...always on the straight and narrow. Sometimes a girl just wants to have fun!
I mean even on the boards, I see people making jokes and it never fails that someone always comes behind them and kills the mood! :lmao:
Whatever...I can still have a good time right?

Anyway, I guess the biggest kill-joy I know is my FIL...he is a HUGE kill-joy! He can shut a party down if you know what I mean!
Do any of you have one in your family, workplace, etc.?

My pet peeve is the cousin of the Kill-joy and that is the "One Upper". We can start a whole other thread on that. Somebody who tries to one-up you on everything you say, do , have, etc.

For me, nothing is worse than the know-it-alls who don't actually know what they're talking about... I'm fine with being a know-it-all when someone actually does know everything about the subject but I hate it when they just BS the information or even worse, saying what they think is correct when it's very wrong.

I think WDW is one of the worst places for such people. :headache:

::yes:: I hear ya there! The worst was when my mom went into complete liver failure and was in the ICU for 2 weeks, then the hospital for 2 more weeks... my dad called her boss to update her on what was going on after the first week, and when he hung up he was shaking his head. I asked him what happened, and he told me that mom's boss said to him "Oh, that's happened to me before, only it was worse, and I was in the hospital for two months! When's she coming back to work?" I can honestly say I wasn't surprised at that response, this woman is the classic "One-Upper".

My MIL is the "Kill-Joy" type, and her daughter is following in her footsteps. We've learned to ignore it and have fun. :thumbsup2

My mother does that! I could be like "I was in a car accident yesterday". She says, "You should see the car accident *I* was in, it was *worse!*. I think its an inability to be empathetic, I think.

Embarrassingly, I think I can be, at times, a kill joy. But I don't judge people I just say things like "don't do that, it could hurt you." I'm a huge kill joy at work. The lack of boundries here where I work and the lack of self-control is astounding. I need to keep my mouth shut.

Yep. My uncle, my mom's sister's husband. He turns every conversation into whatever his agenda is, and in the process makes me feel inferior and like an idiot. He is also quite chauvinistic, though he would never say so.

For instance, at Thanksgiving, I was telling my aunt about my vintage toy collection (a topic I enjoy, so does she). My uncle steps into the conversation, turns it into a rant about toys being made in China and how kids living near the Chinese factories are all being poisoned by the lead coming out of the factory. He went on and on. No way to get the conversation back to what it started as - a happy topic of vintage toys. Over the years I learned to just shut up and just leave the conversation - you can't even explain your point with him, he will cut you off and belittle you every time. :sad2:

I learned to nowadays to just say to my uncle hello, how are you, etc, and never discuss anything deeper than that!

My mother is the QUEEN of the one-uppers. NO MATTER WHAT you are talking about, shes been there, had it worst, whatever!!! I remember when I was pregnant with DD1 I had really bad cyatica. WELL.... acording to DM, shes had that for YEARS, and its so bad, some days she can't get up!!! I'm pretty close with my mom, she tells me everything (she just doesn't shut up! LOL) and I've NEVER heard her complain about that ONCE!
DH had to get cortozone shots in his feet because they hurt so bad from standing 12 hours a day at work. WELL.... DM had those shots YEARS AGO because she had bad feet too. Blah blah blah.... Talked to my father - the shots never happened. We've learned to listen to what she says with a grain of salt......

I've got the best one-upper.

One of my DH's grandmothers always had to have the last word with anyone, including his other grandma.

Finally, the other grandma passed away quite suddenly.

When we told the one-upper grandma, her response was, "Well, I'm not feeling very good myself!"

OMG that is so funny! :lmao:

Yeah when I posted this thread I forgot all about the "one-uppers" because I was so peaved about "kill-joys" at the time..but now come to think of it, I can't decide which grinds my gears more! popcorn::

I will say that my mother also has a one-upper for everyone AND did I mention she knows everyone and their family? Yep, every time I brought a friend home she would ask their last name and suddenly "poof" she knew their entire family! The funny thing is, my friends would play along so they wouldn't embarrass her but secretly I was mortified!!! I love my mom so much but she is a piece of work!
