Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes

Hi!

I am new here and wanted to first say I love all of the adorable stuff you have all made for your beautiful children (yes I looked at and tried to read every post:)).

I have a few questions. I am planning a September trip to WDW with my husband and 4 children. I am wanting to make a few things for the baby to wear since my boys refuse to wear anything Disney:confused3.

The first thing I want to try is a ribbon tee. I see them on eBay and I think I can do it. I am talking about ones with the wide ribbon across the middle of the shirt and you can attach a bow to it. I am going to embroider her name over the ribbon with my new machine. My question is: Do you open the seam and put the ends of the ribbon inside and re serge it? Or do you go as close to the seam as possible with the end of the ribbon? I am a bit of a perfectionist and want my DD to look adorable.

My other question is: I have noticed a lot of the ladies mention that they sell boutique clothes. Is there a way to find a list? I would love one of the full twirl skirts and I am pretty sure that is a bit out of my league.

Thanks in advance for the advice. I really did enjoy looking at all of the adorable outfits you all made.

Thanks,
Lacy

First, WELCOME!!! This is a very inspiring thread!! I would be happy to send you a few names but I think you need a few more posts before you can receive/send a private message (PM). Keep posting!!

Rie'sMom & The Evil Queen Thanks!!!

I couldn't respond to your notes. I'm still too low.

If you look on Ebay, there is a lot more than Disney custom outfits that are sold that infringe on the Disney copyright. There are just hundreds and hundreds of folks that are capitalizing off Disney. I've seen a lot of sellers reproducing Disney images and making custom wedding invitations (big seller for those Disney brides that are on a budget), address labels, cake toppers, jewelry, etc. IMO, I don't begrudge anyone making a living-you just never know who is at the other end of that computer and what their circumstance is. I figure if all these years some of these sellers are still selling Disney copyrighted items (in part) and Disney has not complained to Ebay then live and let live. I think a lot of the people who make the custom outfits are pretty safe. I've seen a lot of them use just generic fabrics and then make the fabric embellishments of the characters themselves...so I think they are safe from infringement, but I could be wrong. :confused3

I work in a large retail company and one of our other stores, the employees had used a disney symbol on thier employee newsletter. It's nothing great, just a photocopy newletter used instore for the employees. How Disney found out about it, I've no clue, but they approached the store and told them they couldn't use it or they'd take it to court. Must have been a CA store. It was a few years ago, so I don't remember the details.

I have not had time to check in here for a few days...lots to read, lol!

First of all Tink, big hugs to you. I am so sorry you did not like the outfit.

I design and sell custom clothing too. I have had many customers tell me that they trust my judgement, and to just do what I think will be best, or to design their outfit as I would for my daughter. I have NO problem doing this, but I also will send pictures EVERY step of the way. Fabric choices, colors, appliques, placement, style, EVERY step of the way. My idea of what is gorgeous may not be your idea of gorgeous, but you had better believe I will always know what your idea is before I cut anything, lol! Each outfit I make takes a lot of time and I want to be sure it will be perfect for each customer.

I have made a couple of JoJo outfits I have made in the past...and my idea of what screams JoJo is very different, lol! Everyone has their own ideas....

With that being said I have never had a customer tell me they were unhappy with an item I made. I am sure that the seller feels bad knowing Tink does not like the outfit, but I also think Tink has the right to NOT like the outfit, having had no idea what was going to be used to create it, kwim? Hopefully the seller will try to work something out with Tink to make both seller and buyer feel a little better about the situation. :goodvibes

Tink have you considered listing the outfit on ebay? Maybe you can get most of your money back and look for a new JoJo outfit for your DD. Good luck! :)

Your JoJo outfit is very cute!!

I hope you got my PM. :)

I don't remember if this site had been posted before http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=76112.0

There are many tutorials for making different types of clothing. It seems to be mostly by college students, but many of the designs could be adapted for children.

:thumbsup2 How cool you mentioned this site because I've been a member for quite some time, but haven't had the time to post there in like forever. lol I am "girlstar" there. :)

ok, this might be a silly question considering ive already made my dd 2 twirly skirts. but, im making one for a friends dd who lives in montanna- measuring her is not an option! her waist is 25in. do i cut the elastic at 25 in? bigger or smaller? thanks! (i usually just measure my dd and use that amount)

KAYSMOMMIE thanks for the compliment!

Sorry I cannot offer any help with ribbon tees, but welcome to the board to both of the posters above who are new! You will love it here!

:welcome: :welcome: :welcome:

You can do the tee either way. I've never opened the seam. Just folded the ribbon under at the seam.

Welcome!

I haven't made my ribbon shirt yet, but I know several people who have. They first open the seams on the side, fuse the ribbon down, stitch into place, tuck the ends of the ribbon inside the seam and close the seam.

I am a secret shopper, and a few years ago, there was a posting for shoppers to report businesses for showing Disney movies on video or DVD. Like at a dentist or doctor's office, that kind of thing. Apparently, depending on the size of the business, they are suppose to have a license from Disney to show the movies. Right after that "opportunity" was posted, I went to the dentist office and they were playing Disney movies. I asked them if they had a license to show it, just out of curiosity. They didn't (of course!). So, I told them about the license thing. They had never heard of it, but said they would look into it. Last time I went in, they asked me about it again, but they hadn't looked into getting a license.

I found the whole thing distatesful, and didn't want any part of those assignments, but I imagine there were quite a few shoppers out there that reported businesses. It would have been a quick easy way to make a little extra money. There are tons of secret shoppers out there, so this was a really good way for Disney to do it. (Although, I think it's ridiculous!)

ETA: I just rechecked the site where the assigment was listed. It's an ongoing thing, so it's still there. It is to identify any copyright violators, not just for Disney movies.

I hope you got my PM. :)

I am just fascinated by all the things people make on that site! It is fast becoming my other obsession! I haven't posted or commented on anything yet, but I'm teresajoy there as well (pretty much teresajoy on every site except ebay!)

I really like your Jojo outfit! It has a circus feel to it and the colors are bright and represent Jojo's Circus. It really is cute.

I'm planning to list it on Ebay so I can get another set.

Wow...that is kind of sad in a way and I am all for enforcing copyright infringement by big businesses, but that secret shopper assignment seems a bit extreme. I guess I just can't imagine having nothing better to do than to go around reporting people for copyright infringement...but that is just me. I know some people on Ebay make it their sole mission in life to police the listings and I wonder where they find the time. :confused3

You could make it the same way you do for your DD, and just use the waist measurement, but I usually cut the elastic for my skirts a little shorter than the waist measurement...it will stretch to fit, kwim? HTH!!

Dena, I love the Ariel skirt you have on your site! Is that new, or did I just miss it before??
-------------------------------
Teresa I just added that outfit yesterday, made it last week. Thanks for noticing, I was thrilled with the way the skirt an the applique tank top turned out!

Tink I am glad you have someone interested, but I think your seller should at least reply....I am sorry you are dealing with this! :(
