Thanks for the square-knot instructions!

I don't know much about making the pillowcase dresses because I haven't made any yet, but the link to the instructions above says: "[You'll need] one package of bias binding (you get this in the notions section of the fabric store--look for double fold binding tape)"

Sou I guess we get the double-fold. I don't know what it means either (I haven't really sewed anything since 4-H!), but I saw it at the store.

double fold means that both edges are folded in (the long edges, not the ends). It will have one fold in the center that you'll place over the raw edge of the fabric and then you'll sew along the side that is "hanging" over and there won't be any raw edges b/c each edge is already pre-folded under. make any sense, lol?

I will have my big knitting project turned in this weekend so I can start on Ds's outfit. I am so excited. I am even going to attempt a hat!

I think I may have lost a screw (no jokes, ha ha), the one that holds in the foot. Does anyone know if these are readily available at the fabric store or if I will have to order one? It is a brother machine if that makes a difference.

I used the wide double fold. I actually ended up making 3 trips to Walmart b/c I kept buying the wrong one!! I also used fabric rather than the pillow case. I bought a yard and it was way too much.

I used the wide double sided binding as well. I bought double sided binding (not extra wide) and it was wayyyy too skinny for me to sew. I went back and bought the extra wide.

Also, my DD3 had no problems with the bows coming untied. I just tied them like a regular bow. No double knots or anything. They stayed in all day. The binding did a good job holding the bows. And my DD is always running, rolling around, just like any 3 year-old nut.

I know when we make the pillowcase dresses, that we should measure around our child, and then length, but for easy, overworked, brain cell drained moms, couldn't we just buy a certain amount (say a yard, or half yard) and know it would fit our kiddos?

DD is VERY VERY slim and I cannot find any directions on how much fabric needs to go around, only length measurements. I don't want the dress to look overly baggy on her. Is there anybody out there that can point the way? Please, oh wonderful sewers of the DIS...Show me the way!!!

By the way..loved the last few pictures of everyones projects! They all look great!!!!

what i did is just "sandwich" dd between th fabric (think getting out of tub and wrapping towel around them) w/ edges of fabric coming together at one side. then you can kind of "take in" w/ your hands until it looks like it would be big enough, pin at this spot, and then sew at that spot to create your seam. does that make sense? im not very good at explainations, as i am a very visual learner myself. if this didnt help, im sure someone else can....this board is filled w/ oodles of talented ladies!

Love the pooh dress!!!! So adorable!!! I really want to practice my sewing so I can me some with coordinating fabrics and trim! I just haven't had time since we are getting ready to leave and I just bought the sewing machine!

As far as how much fabric to use, I did the same as one of the pp. I just wrapped it around my dd to see what I thought would work. Basically what the instructions say is, get the first one done. After you finish the first you will have a much better idea of how much material to use, etc.

My tips for buying fabric:

44"/45" wide fabric: I use half the width for the dress (I think that is fine for probably a 2T and up. For a baby you would probably want to cut it a little thinner) so just buy the length that you measured (for my pattern:lenth of dress + 1.5" to fold over for ribbon casing + 3" hem). A yard is 36". If you are using 2 fabrics (like in my pooh dress above) remember to also ad 5/8" to each piece to allow for seam.

60" wide fabric: If your lenth needed was 30" or less I would use it the other direction if the pattern of the fabric allowed. In that case you would need less than one yard for the width (22" - 23" to be equivilant to the 44" wide fabric). If you needed it longer I would probably just get a tiny bit of another fabric and make a border because that would be the cheapest way to go and I am way cheap!

Hope that helps everyone who was looking for measurements. Make sure and take your measurements down and keep them for the next time you want to make the dress!

I made Drew this June outfit to wear to our Playhouse Disney breakfast. When we got there Leo made a big deal and wanted Drew to lead the parade! I was so excited but she freaked out. She didn't even want to leave the dress on and I had to promise her that no one would notice. She took off the headband and the red shoes and was doing great till Ron Stopable made a huge fuss over "little June." She freaked again!!! We had to go back to the room and change before she would do anything else. She told me while she was changing that she had been afraid that the other kids would think she was the real June and try to get her autograph!!!!! Isn't it funny how their little minds work!
