what size and type of of ribbon worrk best with the ribbon shorts? Or does it not matter?

For my nieces size 7 skort,I used 5/8 " ribbon.

I have a quick question for those who have made the pillowcase dresses: How well do the straps stay tied on an active preschooler?

My DD3 prefers sundresses to shorts/t-shirts for summer. These look like a fun way to make some inexpensive dresses in her favorite characters to wear to daycare. (We've had trouble with clothes being ruined, so cheap but cute is good!)

However, if the straps come untied easily and the teacher has to keep retying them, then it probably isn't a good idea. I don't want to become persona non grata in the teacher's lounge!

Personally, I think to use a few different sizes and types of ribbons. Grosgrain works well, but the smooth, shiny satin-type (the solid blue in the picture) gave me a little trouble sticking with the glue, but not a big deal - just had to hold it a little bit. I think I used ribbons from about 1/2" to 1 1/2" wide.

I know what you mean about the ribbons coming untied. Could you just tie them and them stitch them tied with a needle and thread? Obviously, it would be somewhat permenant, but if you could just slip it over your daughter's head, it might work.

AKSunshinene more question. Your pillowcase dress is a little different than the directions I have. I love the ribbon showing under the arm. Did you buy your directions or use one of the above mentioned?

Don't know if anyone responded yet or not, but I believe the part that you are seeing under the arm is the bias binding, aka bias tape. It does look nice as a coordinating color to match the ribbon though!

Isn't that weird? The satin worked great for me and the grosgrain gave me trouble!

I am looking for someone to make some of the pillowcase type dresses for my 2 DD's. I have a 7 1/2 year old who wears 10/12 or maybe bigger by September and the baby will be about 14 months on our trip so probably around 12-18 months size.

I really want to get matching Minnie dresses for sure (the ones that are red w/ polka dots and black ribbon). I may be interested in other eventually too.

We are trying to save every penny for our trip and would love to trade whatever for dresses. I have 2 Disney Store giftcards for $10 each (never used), and a house full of stuff (a lot brand new and quite a bit Disney) that we just don't use or really need. Oh, man! I just tried to embroider a Mickey Head on a scrap shirt and it came out really junky. I used Sulky stabilizer on the back of shirt, then used light fusible webbing on the iron on then used a really close zigzag stitch on the outline. It's really hard to keep the line straight and smooth. The shirt didn't pull or warp so I am glad about that. Are there any helpful hint s for making it look professional?.....Besides practice, I mean

I finished my Winnie the Pooh dress for dd5! She really likes it. I think it came out pretty cute. I can't wait to figure out how to post pics tomorrow so I can show everyone! I have felt so out of the loop because I hadn't gotten off of my rear and started making something!

Thanks.. I ordered a bunch of red, white and blue ribbons form ebay tonight. My daughters are going to be in a memorial day parade so I am going to attempt these next week. For the zig zag type ribbon, Is that sold by the yard at the craft store?

No, the rick rack comes in a package, maybe 3 yards (don't quote me on that) for about $1 at Walmart. I know Joanns and Hancock have it too, but Walmart has a good selection. It comes in a few sizes...mini, medium (which is just regular, like in the picture), and jumbo too. To me, it was a little hard to work with to get it in a straight line, so I (lightly) glued it in place first and stitched over it. That also helps to keep the "points" from curling up.

Thanks! Ya know, I didn't actually follow any directions. I just skimmed and copied what I saw. I did, however, use the binding tape for the arms. It is much easier than heming, especially when you are sewing by hand!

Question on the bias / binding tape. Is that single fold or double fold? I saw both at Walmart today, but was not sure which one to buy.

As to the question about keeping the pillowcase dresses/ribbons tied, I tie my daughters in a square not, and then do the bow. If the bow comes undone, the knot stays true.

ok.... i knew i had read it somewhere..when i was searching for directions for a pillowcase dress, i found directions that called for using elastic instead of ribbon (mostly for safety reasons- a toddler choking on ribbons, etc). anyway, i found the link again (i think i also saw it several pages back, but who knows cause this thread is getting to be quite long!) i actually dont find this set of directions to be the easiest- i sort of just compiled my own directions using many different sources (most of which was just simple steps from you kind creative ladies! ) anyway, in case you have a set of directions youre already using and youre just looking for a ribbon alternative:
step 4 (10 minutes)--cut your elastic into two, 6" pieces. attach a safety pin to one end of one piece and use that to thread the elastic thru one of the casings. as you thread the elastic, the casing will draw up, forming a stretchy neckline. you'll need to pin the other end of the elastic when it gets to the casing so that it doesn't come all the way out. repeat with the other elastic and casing. stitch across the open end of each casing to hold your elastic in place.


just do that step instead of threading your ribbon through the casing. then maybe you could tie up a pretty bow and just sew it to the dress @ the shoulders or something!?

first step...left over right and pull through

second step....right over left, then pull tight

simple knot , but looks nicer than just regular knot

Used to work in a clothing store, and that is the simple way we knotted everything on manequin displays from fabric blets to scarves to sweaters

I have pillow case dresses with ribbon all the way through, I have ones with elastic all the way through and around (think circle) and then I just tie ribbons onto the elastic, then have one with the elastic sewn across front and back making a gather, and then the binding around the edges. The last one has the cleanest look, but might be the most difficult to make. The one that has the elastic all the way around is the easiest, as it stays in place, plus when my little one goes down for a nap, I can just remove the ribbons, therefore no choking hazzard, but the dress still stays on.

Might be silly ???? BUT I am asking it anyway.

I know when we make the pillowcase dresses, that we should measure around our child, and then length, but for easy, overworked, brain cell drained moms, couldn't we just buy a certain amount (say a yard, or half yard) and know it would fit our kiddos? Sometimes I have seen things in the remnant box, and it states like 3/4 of a yard, or 1/2 of a yard, and I was just wondering if the average pillocase dress was a standard yardage estimate. Is this a crazy question? Sometimes I just want to get in and out of the fabric store with my non appreciative two year old , and it would be easy to grab some of the cute remnants, and not have to wait for someone to measure and cut anything.

I don't know much about making the pillowcase dresses because I haven't made any yet, but the link to the instructions above says: "[You'll need] one package of bias binding (you get this in the notions section of the fabric store--look for double fold binding tape)"

Sou I guess we get the double-fold. I don't know what it means either (I haven't really sewed anything since 4-H!), but I saw it at the store.
