OH!!! :goodvibes and just a few minutes ago I got a call for an interview from the bloodbank. I said I would LOVE to come in for an interview and she said she was glad that I was excited and looked forward to meeting me. I'm a closer, you see, my resume may not always be impressive (though this time I'm more than qualified) but if I can get an interview- I'm gold. SO hopefully between my experience and charm I'll get the position. any and all pixie dust is welcome, it couldn't hurt!!

OK, here are the pics of MOST of my stash. PLEASE forgive the mess. We finished the basement last summer and I literally had 10 people at the house hauling fabric upstairs to the attic and chucking it up there to get ready for the construction crew. I still haven't gotten everythign organized and folded. Then we had a flood int eh basement in April, and we were literally sprinting down the stairs, grabbing stuff, and chucking it into my dining room. It's still not super neat or organized (and, honestly, never will be).

OK, here are the pictures of about 75% of my stash. There are about 18 pics, so I might have to sprea this over a few posts:

My stash is spread between my attic and my basement. Any boxes or bins you see either have fabric, patterns, or trim in them. There is a closet I didn't photograph that is full to overflowing with fabric and stuff, and there are bins and drawer units under all of the sewing tables. Yes, DH LOVES me, lol. Otherwise, he would never tolerate my hoarding.

Wow-Just Wow.... I am in AWE!!!

Here is my latest. Ireland was feeling well enough to pose. I took her splint off for the pictures...:sad2: Yes I know...bad mommy...she has to wear it for 4 weeks...:sad1:

I did the Cindy Loo Who braids on her with the wire in them to make them stand out. Now she wants to wear them to school like that...:scared1:

She looks great - didn't get a chance to post when she had her accident - but it looks like she's feeling better!

Ladies, I just had to comment. Everyone is doing a PHENOMENAL job on their customs. I love the Minnie dot outfit, so cute!!

I just wanted to share my Thanksgiving outfit with everyone! Have a great weekend girls! :thumbsup2

Sending pixie dust your way - i have no job right now either so i know what it's like sending out 600 resumes and getting 1 call.

I haven't been able to post but I have been reading - all of the outfits lately are GREAT!!! I just finished up painting a "Mommy's Little Turkey" shirt for DS for thanksgiving as well! I'll post a little later!

Kristina

Thanks for the luck guys!!! Kristina, I hope something comes your way soon!:goodvibes

Good Luck with your interview!pixiedust: for you. GREAT fabric! I love the colors. :thumbsup2

I have a question for those of you who are making the peasant tops. How do you do the elastic that is mid-sleeve on the long sleeved tops?

I shir two rows with elastic thread.

I have heard that it is faster using elastic thread, but I am too askeered to try something new, just like with ruffles. I like my slow but familiar methods!

th_100_1952.jpg

Shoot! They are all wonky. I'll try to fix later, I have to go to the bus stop!

Don't be scared of shirring!!! Believe me it's SOOOOOOOOOO simple! But who am I to talk, I was scared too!

I love the new top! How do you make your sashes?

Hi there!
I stumbled across this thread via a google search earlier in the week. Wow, you guys are amazingly talented. I haven't read all 1200 + pages, but I've been looking at lots of the pictures. You all have inspired me to try some sewing for my kiddos. We will be heading for our very first Disney trip in December 2008, so I still have some time. I think I'm going to try a simple Thanksgiving skirt for my daughter, just to get my feet wet.
Erin
mommy to J and H

:welcome: Erin!! You can do it!!! I only started sewing in June when I found this thread too!

Here's what I've been doing this week while the girls were battling a stomach virus  We didn't do any schoolwork, so I had plenty of time to work on my ToDo list:
Skirt for dd7 - I made a different shirt than this, I'll post pics of it later

The shirt is going to be for dd8 to wear with these capris:

Okay, I'm sure it's been explained many times before, but I am going to make DD a peasant top with long sleeves this weekend and I would love to try shirring the mid-sleeve elastic, do you just use elastic thread on the bobbin and regular thread on the top? And I think I've heard people say something about pulling the thread a little tight? Or a lot tight? when winding the bobbin? I am way askeered but finally willing to give it a try. If you're doing it on a sleeve do you do it before you sew the sleeve up or after it is done? Do you use a long stitch or a short stitch? How far apart do you shir your 2 rows? Anything else I need to know? TIA!

Steph , it was nice of you to make something for your neighbor- you're so thoughtful.

Jeez, I can't wait to have something new to show ya'll!!!
obesessedw/themouse- your pilgrim outfit is so cute!!! Gotto go surf for some christmas fabric!!

...t.

Well, she is going to pay me. But I won't charge much, so can I still be thoughtful?

Since you haven't taught me to knit yet, I bought a doggie sweater off of :wizard: . Doesn't Scrappy look sharp?

pixiedust: for your job interview. I am sure when she meets you she will fall in love with you and offer you the job right away. If you want me to pick Christmas fabric up from JoAnn's or the quilt shop give me a holler. I am trying to talk M into going with me this afternoon while the boys are at soccer practice.

Listen, HeatherSue is sending me a ruffle foot and I am already quite nervous about having to learn how to use it and now elastic thread? I need baby steps!

The sash is pretty easy. I have a pattern I cut out of paper that is 4 1/2 inches by 20. I use it for my ruffles. I cut a piece a fabric with it, sewed it closed and then attached it to the sides when I sewed the sides together. Then after I sewed the lining to the bodice I sew the sash onto the bodice and lining together so everything stays put. Hope this makes sense. I can take pictures next time I do it if you would like but I bet you can figure it out, it really wasn't that hard.

So cute! I missed this the first time around. I love that fabric!

HeatherSue: I haven't been teased about killing fish so I hope that you are feeling great and are too busy to check in on the computer!

Is the minnie dots fabric (the one with the 1 1/2 inch white dot) discontinued? Just wondering if I see them, should I jump at the opportunity to buy them.

Just a reminder about the sleeve length of the YCMT pattern! And, I do the shirring on the sleeves before I sew the sleeve up. Here are some great tips that I used:

Shirring Tips:
Using elastic thread is an easy way to create fabric gathers, a technique known as shirring. The thread comes in black or white, and is used on the fabric wrong side.

Hand-wind the elastic thread onto the bobbin. If working with a sheer or lightweight fabric, slightly stretch the thread as you wind. For all other fabrics, wind the thread without stretching it. Use coordinating non-elastic thread in the needle.

Set the machine to the longest straight stitch possible. Test stitch on scrap fabric. Hold the fabric taut while stitching, but don't pull it through the machine. Adjust the upper tension as desired (usually looser than normal)
I set mine on 0.

Determine the desired distance between the shirred rows. Mark each stitching line with a water- or air-soluble marking pen (1). Align the fabric and stitch the first row as directed above. Don't backstitch at the beginning or end of the row. I mark my first row, then use my pressure foot as a guide for the rest of them. I'm guessing it's about 1/4" between rows.

After stitching the row, clip the thread, leaving long thread tails. Pull the top thread through to the fabric wrong side. Knot the threads together to secure, and then trim the thread ends close to the knot.

To stitch the next row, place the fabric at the desired distance from the first row. Hold the fabric taut and stitch. You might have to stop periodically to even out the fabric. To do this, keep the needle down in the fabric and raise the presser foot. The more rows stitched, the more gathered the fabric becomes.

To shirr a cylindrical shape, such as a dress bodice, start at the upper edge and stitch horizontally around the fabric cylinder until you've reached the desired shirred width (2).

When the bobbin thread runs out, clip the needle thread and pull it to the wrong side, and knot the threads. Wind more thread onto the bobbin and begin stitching where the previous thread ended.

Gotcha!!! So, it's just a rectangle, not tapered on the ends?

Thanks for everyone's prayers!

I think today went o.k. I had to do some "tough love" talk a couple of times and I know she would rather have not heard what I said, but things have to be said. This isn't a close friend. She is a woman who at one point lived next door to the minister at my church (a very teeny tiny small town church) and they really reached out to this family. From what I can tell she didn't have any friends or relatives that she is still in contact with. She really is someone who has had a lot of pain in her life. It makes it difficult for us though because she doesn't really trust anyone (because of her tough past) and she is in a lot of need right now.

Her boyfriend (who seems to be a nice guy) is living in a state of denial right along with her. Neither of them are really managing her care. She hasn't been to dialysis (no idea how to spell that) in over a month and at this point there is no chemo or radiation taking place. From experience with my mil I would assume that the docs aren't pushing these things because they know that she is at the end.

Today was hard and I pretty much had to flat out tell her that if she doesn't get a nurse and she calls 911 (she passed out for ??? alone with her ds3 last week) the paramedics will probably call the police and make sure that her son is in a safe place. My dh (fireman/paramedic) told me last night that people are actually placed in nursing homes when they are found alone in her condition.

He dd13 has a bad break in her finger and I tried to convince her to leave some names of people who she would allow to take her dd to the doc. and she won't. She says her dd needs her there. That is true, but she isn't facing the reality that we don't know if it is going to be possible for much longer.

Sorry this is such a ramble and I know everyone stopped reading a long time ago, but it's been a long day and I really appreciate the prayers!

I feel for you, I really do! I'd hate to be in your situation! Sounds like she does need to stop being so darn proud and accept the help for her childrens' sake, not just her own!

mytwotinks - what an awful situation! if she has no kidney function of her own and hasn't had dialysis in a month, it's a wonder she's still breathing.
(I work in the dialysis field)
A lot of our patients pass after stopping dialysis for about a week or so.
Of course, if hers was just occasional dialysis and not all the time, that would give her longer.
I feel sorry for all the kids involved. :guilty:

Steph, heck no!!! getting paid is WAY better than being thoughtful;)
and I can teach you how to knit, as long as you don't make any mistakes, cause if I drop a stitch I am screwed!!! I can't tear back...so when I make a mistake I have to start over. :rotfl: well, not always.

I do get frustrated with the situation because she is making it really hard to help her, but I try to understand how scary it would be to admit once and for all that I was dying. The problem is that she is relying on us (the church) almost 100% for her help so we need to know what's going on.

Her cancer started in her Kidneys. She had one removed and has a large tumor on the remaining one. She must have some function or I assume that she would have been gone by now. She went to the emergency room last night because both of her legs swelled up. I am assuming that is being caused by the kidney failure????? Do you see that when a patient stops dialysis?

She is at the doctor now. She was in the ER last night and they didn't do much for her but tell her to see a doc today. They did prescribe a diaretic, but I don't see what good that would do if her kidneys were already shutting down.

Has anyone used the kind of vintage looking Mickey that they have at JoAnn on anything? I caried it around with me twice now and didn't get it. I just don't know for sure what I would do with it. It was a faded/denim(colored)/blue background with mickey and the red was kind of a rust and the yellow was kind of mustard color. It reminded me of the vintagy looking bags and things they sell in DW.
