Kick'n It at Kidani (aka Am I Becoming a Resort Snob?)Final Update 8/20 p.54

Great updates MEK! How come you never smile in your pictures?

i'm sorry your batteries died - how rude of that woman to not only accost you for standing there perfectly innocently but also during a battery crisis. i'd have probably pelted her with the dead batteries...:rolleyes1

I agree with you regarding the TS in MK. For MNSSHP I was looking to be in the park early and have a nice dinner but alas not to be so. :upsidedow

I like CP for breakfast and since we are doing that I didn't want two meals there so we are going to spend a bit of time at DTD and have something there.

What is it with all of these rude people? Grrrrrrrrrr

Hey Princess Brittany.....Welcome! :thumbsup2

Cool! Were you also in a standard villa in the Timon building? We were in Timon 4. We were very close to the Timon 4 elevator. It was almost right around the corner from us. I did take a pic of our door on the day we checked out, so I will post that soon (better late than never).

Please chime in with your impressions /experiences at Kidani. I'm anxious to hear what you thought. Do you own there and/or SSR? Do you want to go back as much as I do?

We were in the Timon building too. Our room was room number 7227. Kidani is actually our home resort and we loved it so much. We don't own at SSR, but we also stayed there on our trip in June. We sure do want to go back as often as you do. We usually do one trip a year but sometimes we will do two a year it just depends on how the year goes. We currently have another trip booked for Jambo House Concierge June 11 - June 19 2010 and we are all super excited to stay concierge.

Hey MEK!!

Loved the last few updates!

bummer that BTMRR and SM were down! Thats not fair at all!

I agree... LTT dinner in 90F heat... no thanks!

My Tonys meal was pretty 'Eh' too... except for the tiramasu...which is the ONLY reason that I will be going back at this point;)

I've had my camera battery die on me too... NOT a happy Crush...not at all! Totally deserves a diva moment:lmao:

Another great update MEK! Your too funny calling your DH directionally impaired! :rotfl2:I got a big kick out of that! MY is the exact opposite! I still need a map in DHS and AK and DH goes "Oh come on! lets go! I know where it is!" He used to read the atlas for fun as a kid, no joke!

It's too you meal at Tony's was less then great! I've enjoyed their eggplant in the past! I totally agree with your assessement of the dining options at MK versus DHS! MK = good CS and plenty of them, less then wonderful TS and very few! DHS = good TS and a good amount (my fav so far is 50's primetime!), cs, well ick!

Yet another reason why we need to photograph these people! ;)

But I couldn't....My batteries were DEAD! Another reason to always carry spares!

Hey faerieprincess......

Thanks. I actually have smilephobia! Yes....there is such a thing. :laughing:Seriously, I have always hated my teeth since I was a teen because they are not straight. I stopped smiling awhile back because it always seemed like the light would relect off my buck front tooth. I know that probably sounds silly, but I have actually forgotten how to smile. I can do it spontaneously, but never in front of a camera. My DS has been trying to teach me!

Can you believe it.......accusing me of blocking her view during my crisis? So uncool. Plus she had a crappy viewing spot anyway. I wouldn't have wanted her spot!

Yeah - I hear ya'. I am going to eat at Kona Cafe before the party. I have actually decided that the Wave will be my new MK TS restaurant. Hey - if I can walk there, then its close enough! Right?:rotfl: It was a lot better than Tony's IMHO.

I love CP for breakfast! Plus I love Eeyore!

Rude people...I don't know. I think most of the time people really aren't trying to be rude. They are just thinking about themselves first and then they forget about common courtesy.

I think we were in 7221. I'll be posting that pic soon. Concierge.....I would LOVE that. It sounds so awesome. Unfortunately, I am point challenged, so they only chance I have of staying concierge is if DH and I can book a studio sometime!

Thanks Paula......

How was Hershey Park????? Tiramasu....that sounds yummy. Can you believe I still don't remember what I had for dessert there? Next trip - I promise to take notes!

Having two mountains out of commission does not make for a productive evening at MK. Plus no TTA! :sad2: Bad!

Dead batteries = Diva Moment!

Thanks Melissa! My DH is getting even more directionally impaired now that he uses a GPS to go everywhere. Last weekend he could not remember how to start the trip to Lancaster Pa. We have been Lancaster a million times before he got that GPS. Now he can't even figure out which way to turn when we get to the first major road??????? Ughhh!

Hey - I still like to read maps, so I can relate to your DH.

I wonder if Tony's had eggplant that night. I actually remember you writing about that. I love eggplant. Darn! That's what I should have had!

I love 50's primetime, too but I think its more fun when you go with a larger crowd. I like it better for dinner than lunch cause it is SOOOOOOOOO much food. I will definately do that again on a future trip.

Hi MEK,

So glad you were able to enjoy some pool time! What you describe with the dark clouds and lightning is pretty much what we have been experiencing all "summer" long. :headache:

Sounds like a fun evening at the MK. I don't know why they don't do something to improve the TS restaurants there. :confused3

I can't stand the darn GPS! DH could get us from here to California without it but still insists on using it for everything! He uses to go places we've been a million times too! Why do we need to the GPS to go to my parents house?! Been there before GPS and got there fine. Think we'll be fine without it! It's just another man toy!

I agree about a large crowd at 50's We sat in a room with a group of students once, some of them were from Japan. They were trying to teach the waitress Japanese! She had a REALLY heavy accent, she was from somewhere in the Carribean, and it was absolutely hysterical!

Hi MEK!

Just catching up, crazy work week at my new job and kids stuff.

Harbour House.....when I was reading I was thinking the same thing, really like this place we usually do Peco's Bill as well, but last year tried Harbour House, thought it was good. As I kept reading you also did KTTK tour! I just did this in April on my Ladies trip. What a fantastic tour, Claire was our tour guide and she was just a wealth on info.

Barnstormer-you are not too old! Every year until just a few years ago it was a ritual for DH to ride with my younger son. We have not done this in the past couple of years as DS is not interested any longer, but DH and him used to ride it several times in a row, DH thought it was fun! Just one of those fun Disney things we would do every year.

Got to get back to work. Looking for your Epcot evening report. I just love Epcot in the evening, Illuminations :cloud9: , I think Epcot is part of my Y&BC addiction.

P.S. I think we are cool (not old) :thumbsup2

:worship:I just want to take a moment to Thank You for posting your Wishes Fireworks picture! :worship: Without you, I would have NO pictures to post of Wishes! You're the best!

Hey C - We did have awesome pool time this trip! Best ever - hands down! And how wonderful that it coincided with our visit to AKL, because both of the pools there were super fabulous!

We did have a fun evening at MK, although I wish I had gotten to do more rides. I missed Philarmagic, so I will definately be doing that in September. I also want to do all the classic kid rides in September (if DH will humor me). I really like Peter Pan the best!

:rotfl2:My DH does that, too. I told him I wanted to use the GPS tomorrow to go pick my son up from soccer camp at Kutztown University. He said, "You don't need that. You can use the mapquest directions. I need it to go to my mom's in case I need to go get gas or something". Whaaaaaaattttt? Are you freak'n kidding me?

Yeah - I feel a 50's primetime visit coming on if we visit next May with my BIL and SIL. This SIL is such a hoot, she would love it!

Hey Hockeymom:

Well, maybe I will try Barnstormer on my next visit. I am really hoping for low crowds, so I can try some of these things I pass by to wait in line for more popular rides.

I loved KTTK tour, too. I did it solo. It was still lots of fun.

Yup ......Lots of Epcot coming up soon, but first I have to describe moving day!

In my next post (Day 6) I will talk about Moving Day. Moving Day was tough, because I really didn't want to leave AKL and Kidani! I knew it was going to be hard to do the non DVC part of my stay at the end of the trip, instead of the beginning. But remember, I had no choice. If I had done it any other way it would have resulted in me using points for two weekend nights instead of one. Since I am point challenged, my plan seemed the most economic way to proceed. If it had just been me and my DH, moving from a studio to CSR, it probably wouldn't have been so bad. But moving from the big 2BR villa to 2 regular rooms was....well..... very......Shocking! That's the only word I can think of right now.

So - lesson learned, although I had been forewarned,......I will ALWAYS try to do my Non DVC stay first then move to the DVC stay! Also - it would have been much better to do the short stay first, then finish with the longer stay.

The other thing that was so disruptive about moving was adding one more room key. That doesn't sound like much, but remember with DVC your room key and park tickets are separate to begin with. Now this doesn't sound too overwhelming, but remember that each of the my boys and I had an old non-expiring ticket with water park passes. Following me so far???? Then when we checked into CSR each person got one more room key. Since our dining plan was ending, I put charging privledges on both my boys' cards making it so those cards needed to be accounted for at all times. So our total talley of cards for Saturday:

Me: 4
DH: 3
DS14: 4
DS16: 4
DSfriend: 3
LJ:3

Total is 21 cards/passes for 6 people! :scared1: We needed the Kidani room keys for day 6 (Saturday) because they had our meal plan credits that we were still using.

In addition, I was carrying my DVC membership card and my TIW card that I purchased last year!

So - why am I telling you all this?.....Because by Saturday and Sunday we started to have some serious issues with misplaced cards/park passes. And you, dear friends, will have the pleasure of reading about those issues. This is just a little prelude to what's coming next! And, don't forget.....I still have a meltdown (aka diva moment) to describe!

I will be posting more tonight. My Day 6 pics are all uploaded into photobucket and ready to go. I have more pics of the Kidani and Jambo house pools and pics of the CSR pool. I also want to add a little summary of what I liked (loved) :love:about Kidani and the AKL and what I didn't like so much (in other words....what has room for improvement).

See ya all tonight!

He used to read the atlas for fun as a kid, no joke!

this is my son! He adores maps and loves to follow along when we are in the car. When he was 6, we got a vehicle that had a digital compass that could be seen from the backseat. He never even asked what it was, he somehow knew what N, SE, W, etc meant and would announce what direction we were travelling. He went to a birthday party last week and got a "real" compass in the goodie bag and has now learned to use it to figure out which way he is going. I'm thinking of introducing him to geocaching (I've never done it but my brother has and it sounds like the kind of thing Patrick would love!)

I must admit, he comes by this naturally, I will take a map over a GPS anyday and will pull up mapquest on the computer for any excuse I can :lmao:

Back to you MEK, that is quite the foreshadowing!

So sorry to hear about Tony's and the not so pleasent run in with that lady in the MK  I really don't understand what causes people to get soo uptight and freak out about stuff like that........ It's like, Hello- you are in DISNEY WORLD!!!! Relax and enjoy it :confused3

Katie:

That is such a cute story about your son. I think its really good to know how to read a map. I still think its much more spatial than the GPS. The GPS is just like following a robot. I guess when everyone turns to GPS's nobody is going to know what cities and states are near one and another.

Actually - the key card / park pass thing was not that bad, but it certainly contributed to my Epcot meltdown.

So sorry to hear about Tony's and the not so pleasent run in with that lady in the MK  I really don't understand what causes people to get soo uptight and freak out about stuff like that........ It's like, Hello- you are in DISNEY WORLD!!!! Relax and enjoy it :confused3

I just think Disney world can bring out the good AND the bad in people. I guess people who line up really early for fireworks or a parade begin to feel like they "own" their spot. They get very territorial and, while it is totally uncool to intentionally stand in someone's way, the park is crowded and people will unintentionally get in your way. With Wishes its just too easy to get in someone's way because everone just lines up randomly. Oh well ..... I am just going to try to never overreact if someone ever does something to me! Now I know what its like to be on the receiving end!

BTW - I love the pics on the bottom of your siggie - pretty girls!

I promised an update tonight and I plan to deliver. We just had a downpour come through here. It was wicked, but reminded of the thunderstorms you get in Disney world. Pouring one minute, people huddling in buildings and beneath awnings, sun out the next. A fitting weather scenario for another update.

Saturday was moving day. I already told you how I felt about moving day and what I would do differently in the future (other than not bring my teenagers). So although I was sad to leave Kidani, I was also curious to see CSR. It is a resort I have always wanted to stay in, yet it has always eluded me. My first trip on property was in 2003. We did the original buy 4/get 3 free deal. We stayed at POR. CSR was not available. We went back in 2005 for the first year of free dining. We stayed at CBR. CSR was not available. Well, actually it was, but only a waterview. I make it a point never to pay for something I don't think adds much value and that would be a water view. All I have to do is walk outside if I want to see a water view. I'm not paying for that when I could use that money for something more essential - like food or souveniers.

My next "family" trip was in 2006. We stayed at SSR on "rented" points. Our last family trip was 2008 - we stayed at SSR on our own points. That brings us to today. Now, I must mention that I did have several other trips to the world, but they included only miscellaneous family members. One of those trips was even solo. In those trips I generally stayed value because it seemed like the thing to do. So in addition to SSR, POR, CBR, one night at POFQ, I have also stayed at POP and ASmu. So finally....finally....I was getting a chance to stay at CSR. I have been coveting Buzz's pictures for years. Now I could take my own.

So on moving day I decided that I wanted to visit the health club one more time. And this time I planned to take my camera. I was going to try to take whatever pictures I may have forgotten.

In case you thought I forgot.....Here is my picture of the door:

DisneyJune2009933.jpg

On my way to the health club I tried to take some animal pictures, but the animals were not on the savannah. They were actually back near their animal pen.

See them.....Way off in the distance:

But now it was time to go meet my nemesis:

DisneyJune2009880.jpg

and guess what.... The TV worked today!!!!!!!!! Right on!

Here is my stellar (eh uhm.....boring) view out the window:

DisneyJune2009882.jpg

I did NOT take pictures of any of the other exercise equipment because there was another man in there and I KNEW he would think I was CRAZY. Trust me, the universal gym equipment was very, very nice.

After I was done running I did what any good Dis'er would do next. I took pictures of the bathroom. This bathroom was gorgeous. I haven't seen a bathroom this pretty since I skied at Snowbasin in Utah. Snowbasin was one of the mountains they used for the Olympics and they did a serious refurb on those bathrooms to make them very, very upscale. But, I digress. Here is the BR at the kidani health club/pool:

These pictures did not do the bathroom justice.

Once outside I decided to take some more pictures of the pool area (you can never have enough). But first, I took a picture of this man cleaning the windows. He was out there every morning making sure that people like me didn't need to look at smudges and finger prints:

DisneyJune2009889.jpg

Here is the hot tub I never went in, cause I was already hot enough and saw no reason to get any hotter.

Behind this green barrier is supposed to be another savannah. That would be cool - to be at the pool and be able to see animals on the savannah.

To be continued:

OK, I have read all of your report and let me tell you...fabulous. I was lurking on the TR page. I have never had the courage to post a TR and am interested in doing so for our next trip in June 2010. Is it too early for a PTR?

Sorry about being a late arrival on your TR. As you might tell by my sig we will be staying at Kidani, 2 bdrm, SV. We have 3 children, 2 of which are 3 yo, so they will enjoy the animals. Plus my DD11 LOVES animals...actually I believe AK is her favorite park for that reason.

I am SO SUPER EXCITED about our 1st DVC stay, I cannot wait.

We used our DP's at DLR GCH Concierge. That was AMAZING. I highly suggest visting the west coast when the villas open up!!!

I hope he has fun at camp, too. Only one kid from Delaware usually makes it to the call back camp. We are District 1 so we are in with all of NJ, NY, PA, and all the New England states. My son was on the same team with the kid who gets called back every year and he is not that good, IMHO. He is fast, but that's about it. He is not a "smart" soccer player. My sons says, "Yeah - coaches see him and they think ....I can make something out of him.....then they realize they can't".

Next soccer tournament - Aug 1st & 2nd. Then thanksgiving, then Christmas. I even heard some mumblings of maybe Wide World of Sports! But I don't want to say anything too loud yet, cause it may be a rumor!

yeah, I don't know enough yet to know how WA does on call back but that won't apply till next year anyway but in looking at the 95 regional pool pic it looks like there are 4 from WA but none I recognize (K's team is about half 95's half 96's) , DSD has been in one invite game and has another invite game today but that's about all I know! 4 of her teammates are there with her and I don't know how the rest are doing. I'm just glad she's having fun. Her getting goals is great but fun is more important right now, to me. WA has done well so far but CA always kick our behind in everything so we will see lol!

It's funny. To be honest that is a little bit of K. She IS fast, she has a lot of raw talent but never "quite" fufills it. We will see, so far with the new coach this year it's better. Old one had favorites and they weren't her. The "big" favorite moved to a different team and it's been a really really good thing for the team even if they aren't winning their tournaments. To a large degree it's a new team.

She needs to get "smarter", I know exactly what you mean.

Christmas??????????????? DH would go ballistic. He is so upset that there is one over thanksgiving it's crazy. Right now we have one aug 7-9, aug 21-23, thanksgiving in CA and then sometime in Feb. The feb one is new as of last week and it's in AZ so DH isn't happy about that either.

Sigh.

So now it was time to finish packing. I had done laundry the day before. I even started packing the previous night. Now it was time for the finishing touches. I packed up everything but the teenager's stuff. They were still sleeping. All along I had planned for today to be a rest/resort day. This, of course, was before I knew that one of our park days would be nixed thanks to the mystery rash. Even though I knew we had already lost a park day, I stuck with the plan of another rest/resort day. I was hoping to get checked into CSR early, go to the pool, and then go to Epcot mid afternoon.

So DH and I loaded up the car with everything that was packed. LJ was up, so the three of us went over to CSR to check-in. This took much, much longer than I expected because they said I still owed $ on the rooms. I actually booked the rooms through CRO. This was the first time I ever booked through them. In the past I have always used AAA. Now I understand why people have trouble. I got a great AP rate on the rooms - Sat night $119 and Sun night - $99. The problem was I didn't get the reduced price on the Sat night room until I had already paid for the rooms. My original reservation for Saturday night was for an AAA rate. So, to make a long story short.....they actually credited my credit card more $ than I thought and now I owed. So, once I had that straightened out, we went back to Kidani to wake up the teens. I think someone from the college program checked us in. He looked so young and he gave us the standard instructions of "Call after 3pm". I don't know whether they had the text message alerts when we checked in, but that sure would have been handy.

Now that I figured we wouldn't be in the room until later, we decided to hang at the Jambo house pool and have lunch at the Mara. The teenagers declared that they liked the Kidani pool better, so they would not be joining us at Jambo (except to eat). We really did have a nice afternoon at the pool. LJ swam constantly except to stop and eat. I took many more pictures so I will post some now......

While we were at the pool we sat down near a woman who was talking on her cell phonw. She was completely alone and no one ever joined her while we were there. She was having one of those in depth, serious dicussions about her life, her relationships, her purpose. You know the kind. It's the kind of talk you would have with your best friends BEFORE you had kids, because once you had kids you certainly didn't have time for that nonsense. Her talk was punctuated by phrases like, "If I wasn't such a strong person I never would have gotten through that....", "I depend on myself and I don't want to worry about what he thinks".....I know its hard, but this is the way things have to be and I can stand on my own". I know these phrases sound pretty benign, but, seriously, this went on for at least an hour. I tried to stay away from her area as much as possible. When she FINALLY got up to get a drink I asked my DH how he could sit there that long and listen to her. He said (and CP you will appreciate this), "Listen to what?" Uggghhhhhh! Are you kidding me????? I was ready to gag her with her beach towel. Either that or I was ready to go out to the car and get the emergency Xanax out of my pocket book. One for her and one for me. It was just weird. A Weird, psychobable conversation to be having in my happy place.

So...I took more pictures. LJ ate early, but when DH and DS went to get food I called over to CSR. Yeah.....our room was finally ready.

Up next....CSR and our evening at Epcot. But first....the last of the AKL pictures.
