Hi, anyone familiar with the area? We will be staying at a campground there and can't decide between late June and late August. We don't want it "hot"...lower 70s would be perfect and as bugless as possible! lol...we'd also prefer it to be on the quiet side if possible. It's just dh, me and our bulldog, Winnie. Thanks!

We go in July, so I can't really say anything about June or August.

The #1 MUST do is go to dinner at the Hurricane Restaurant. It's not inexpensive, but it will be the best dinner you have while you're in Maine. We used to go to the one in Perkins Cove (Ogunquit) at least 2-3 times during the week that we were there... before they lost their lease. Now, we drive to Kennebunkport for dinner one of the nights we're there.

Maine is serene and beautiful!

Thank you! Last year we stayed in Belfast and traveled all around. LOVED it.

I would say June for the cooler temps and smaller crowds, August for fewer bugs.

The water on the beaches of Maine is frigid! Even at the end of summer, your legs will ache if you walk in it.

I know! BRRRRRRR!

ALthough last year we went late AUg. and the Bar Harbor/Boothbay areas were quite uncrowded. I think the kids go back to school earlier in some parts of the Northeast...here it's after Labor Day.

I think I just talked myself into August...anyone know when kids go back to school?

We started school August 30 last year (VT).

I'd go with August.

The ocean will be a tad warmer, but not much!

Have fun!

Hi there! I remember you from last years Belfast posts. I would have to recomend August. Late June, you still run the risk of lower temps.

 I'm quite familiar with the area. We live in Kennebunkport! :teeth:

June in Maine can be unpredictable. Sometimes it can be hot toward the end of the month, and other times it can be downright chilly. August is usually very nice, although it can get hot. As far as crowds go, you'll probably see more tourists toward the end of August than the end of June. Both can be quiet, though, because the real tourist season runs from about July 4 to mid-August. The fall gets busy with leaf-peepers.

Schools in our area usually resume after Labor Day, but some do go back the last week in August. Usually the towns that cater to tourism don't go back to school till after Labor Day because so many of the high school kids have summer jobs that require them to work right up to the end of summer.

Kennebunkport is a beautiful little town. There are a lot of very good restaurants in the area- Allison's Restaurant, Windows on the Water, Federal Jacks, The White Barn. For the best fried clams, and other seafood, visit the Clam Shack. It's a small building just before you head over the bridge in Kennebunkport. It's take-out only, but there are some benches outside, or people just enjoy standing on the walkway over the bridge and eating their food.

The beaches in the area are beautiful, also. Like someone else said, only the hearty and brave actually go in the ocean! Kennebunk Beach is a nice place to take a stroll. There's a sidewalk right next to the beach that goes for quite a distance. If you're looking for a beach with more sand and action, try Old Orchard Beach.

Any questions, just ask!

I'm from NH and vactioned in Kennebunkport a lot (I have an ex whose family owned a house on Goose rocks beach). I would reccomend Aug, but thats a personal prefrence.

I know you didn't ask but deffinitely eat at Federal Jacks and Allisons. Both are really really good!!

I live in Maine too and we start back the 29th of August this year. I would go with the August time frame too cause June you can be chopping the ice off your bucket of water. Only kidding but it can be very cool.

oh my gosh. kennebunkport was beautiful, i still remember going one summer back in grade school (9 years ago!). i think we went in july and the weather was comfortable (we wore shorts and tees), but i would not go swimming.

Hoping to get more info here ....
does anyone know of a reasonable place to stay for a family with young kids??

My parents have a cottage in Wells, Maine and I grew up vacationing in Maine. August would probably be the best month for what you are looking for. Speaking of great places to eat-----The Maine Diner in Wells (best mac&cheese and chicken tenders)and the Steak House(to die for bread pudding)are fabulous!! Long lines but great food!!

So, where is Allison's and how does it compare to The Hurricane? Is it worth the drive from Ogunquit?

Funny how this thread kind of turned to food but The Steak House that was mentioned YUMMYYYYYYYY On Rt 1 in Wells, opens at 4, closes at 9. No typo there, those are the hours, that's all they need because there are people waiting from before 4 and the line never stops. And the place has two floors, it is not a small place but they will have a wait.
You have to check it out, you won't be sorry.
PS I don't eat steak, it is a varied menu even though it is called The Steak House

There are no chain hotels/motels in Kennebunkport, or the surrounding towns of Kennebunk and Arundel. Instead, there are many locally owned Inns, cabins, and bed and breakfast type places. Since we live here, we haven't stayed in any of them, so I can't speak for what they are like or how they are set up. I do know that there are a lot of VERY nice places to stay right on the beach or in town.

Route One is close by and you'll find some chain hotels there.

Thanks so much! We need restaurants that are takeout or have outdoor dining that allows dogs. How are the bugs in June? Cool weather is ok with us. We won't be swimming.
