Kennenbunkport, Maine question

So, where is Allison's and how does it compare to The Hurricane? Is it worth the drive from Ogunquit?

Allison's Restaurant is very near The Hurricane Restaurant, right in Dock Square in Kennebunkport. The food is very good, and if you can get a table upstairs by the windows, you'll have a great view of Dock Square.

Federal Jacks is also great and is down a short street to your left just before you cross the bridge into Dock Square. They have outdoor seating and a nice view of the harbor and boats. The outdoor seating is good on a warm, not too windy, evening.

Is it worth the drive from Oqunquit? I would say yes, if you have the extra time to do it, and you go at a time when you won't be stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on Route 1. Of course, Oqunquit has a lot of great restaurants, too. We like Vinny's Restaurant on Route 1.

If you're looking for a very casual seafood restaurant try The Seafood Center in Arundel on Route 1. The food is excellent and you get a lot of it. You order and pick up the food yourself, very relaxed atmosphere.

I have been going to York beach for years which is not far from where you are going and I don't remember being bothered by bugs at any time of the year. No more than an occasional mosquito like anywhere else. I don't think you have to worry about them, but in June it can get chilly. Just have a sweater handy and you'll be fine.

Thank you! It's more of a concern since we'll be at a campground with lots of trees around.

Found this and Aug is sounding better and better:

Blackflies are usually gone by the third week of June. The severity and duration depends on temperature and rainfall during each particular spring. Mosquitoes are at their worst for about an hour after sun-up when things start warming up and for about an hour right before sun-down. Late June is their "peak season." We recently added screened-in porches to most of our cabins for the bug season.

Thanks so much! We need restaurants that are takeout or have outdoor dining that allows dogs. How are the bugs in June? Cool weather is ok with us. We won't be swimming.

The Clam Shack is take-out only and excellent. If you head south on Route one towards Wells, Moody, Oquinquit, there are some eating places that have outdoor areas. There is an excellent sandwich shop in Kennebunk called Bennetts. It's a mile or two south of Dock Square. They make all kinds of subs and there are a few picnic tables outside.

We do have mosquitos all summer here in Maine, although they aren't too bad in June. They're worse where there are woods or standing water. The end of May and beginning of June we have tiny black flies that can be insane, especially in wooded areas. The weather by the end of June is usually quite pleasant, but hard to say sometimes. Could be hot, could be rainy and chilly.

Oh yea, I forgot I had read that in your post. That does change things a bit, there will be bugs at a campground. I love to camp, have a wonderful time.

If you head up to Freeport, make sure to stop at Day's Lobster Pound on Route One in Yarmouth. It is a hole-in-the-wall shack that has the best lobster rolls around and outdoor seating. Your dogs will be allowed in all of the stores in Freeport.... one of the things I love about going there, though we've never taken our dogs with us. It gives us a "dog fix" when we get to pet other peoples fur babies.

Ooh, something else to consider, luvwinnie, is that you can buy wine and liquor cheaper in NH on your way to ME. On I95, there are rest stops that sell liquor and lottery tickets.... I kid you not.

I can get a bottle of Copolla's Blue Label Merlot in NH for about $14 per bottle where as at home, in PA, it is almost $20.

Just something to consider for those evenings by the campfire.

Thanks for the tip! I can only have an occasional drink due to meds, but dh will want some beer on vacation.
