Keeping Up Appearances while in the heat on vacation!!!!

Native Floridian here with some of my own experiences on products and the heat.

First off, as much as I wish it were the case, finding such miracle products that are also at a bargain price is near to impossible. Heck, I have a hard enough time finding such miracle products at ANY price. :rotfl2:

I am a bit of a beauty product snob though and rarely buy drugstore products unless I'm in a real financial bind. Unfortunately even my brand name Dior and Chanel products melt right off of my face at Disney in the summer heat regardless of multiple touch ups. We went in July and the pictures of me were just terrible with no evidence of makeup, just a sweaty mess.

I have never tried mineral makeups since I'm not a huge foundation user. I've heard they are tricky and time consuming to apply. However, they are gaining such popularity that even the drugstore brands are making them now. If they are cheap enough it may be worth a try. I still don't know how the makeup holds up in brutal Fl humidity.

I swear by tinted moisturizer instead of foundation in the summer. Summer makeup shouldn't look heavy, dark, or cakey anyway. It should be dewy and translucent. Besides, no matter what you put on your face is going to look dewy by the end of the day anyway. At least when tinted moisturizer melts off your face you won't look like a scary Halloween makeup experiment. Plus if you get one shade darker than your skin, you can highlight it on cheekbones, bridge of nose, temples, and chin for a sunkissed look.

I can't recommend a good cheap drugstore mascara as I know of none that I have liked. I fork out the $20 for Lancome or Dior..not much else to say there.

I have mucho experience in the self tanner dept. I am ghostly white living amongst many bronzed beauties here in Fl so I constantly feel the need to keep up. Unfortunately I have yet to try any product that gave me anything remotely close to a natural looking tan. Again, I am extremely pale though and darker skin tones have better success at these products than I do. Please keep in mind that the biggest hazard with sunless tanners is staining. When you sweat, the bronzer ends up staining your clothes, shoes, or anything else your damp skin is in contact with. I have found this to be the case with the gradual tanners as well as the instant bronzers. Having said that I think that self tanners can be a very individual thing. What works great for one person's skin tone can be ghastly for another. If you are super pale for me, the closest thing to a natural tan (which still isn't all that close) is a gradual tanner or the lightest shade of a self tanner. I actually don't mind banana boat's self tanning foam too much. It is dirt cheap and smells horrible but leaves okay results. Plus, I like the tinted foams because you have a better idea of how evenly you are applying it.

I'm a convert to bare escentuals and prefer self tanners and bronzers for daytime while on vacation. I scrolled through the replies so far and I'm really pleased to hear from Floridians. My first thought was to ask one of you how you deal all the time. Thanks so much for starting this thread - and responding - especially the hairspray comments. Interesting info as usual!

I will add that I was a dept store makeup girl for years & years, paid thru the nose for Clinique and Lancome and many other products. Then I went the cheapie cheap route and some of those were actually pretty good too!

The Bare Minerals/Escentuals products are really goof proof, IMO. Yeah, they take a little longer to get the hang of than using a liquid & a sponge, but they are customizable to your likes/dislikes. I also like that I can use my foundation powder as a concealer simply by using a different brush.

I have not tried the L'Oreal mineral product but if you have heard good things, why not give it a try, I don't think it would be terrible!

There is an Aveda line for humidity, called Brilliant, this is the hair spray:
http://www.aveda.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY11545&PRODUCT_ID=PROD5821
Not sure if that is the one that someone else mentioned above. I've not tried that, but I have tried the Aveda Light Elements line and like it.

However, I've got curly hair that is getting longer and longer, unless the hair falling out is breaking off-lol, and it frizzes really easily. I went back from the expensive salon products to Pantene again and it looks great. I use the Hydrating Curls line and it really works for me, even when the temps in WDW were in the high 90s with humidity in the 90th percent!

If you like Lancome (I used to sell at Nordstom) You'll also like Loreal products, they are related. Marketing and packaging are different but colors and formulations are the same or very similar.

Try the Loreal Sublime Bronze in Light/medium. It's such a pretty tone for fairer skins. Mayhaps you'd like it.

The Aveda products on the above website (Thank You Welovedis!!!!) all smell so good! Hairsprays and products usually smell bad to me and make me itch and sneeze....but not Aveda.

Why can't you pack it?
It just comes with a really small cap that doesn't stay on very well, so it would probably just pop off and spray till it was empty. I might try to use tape and see if I can get the lid on really tight and then pack it. I thought it might explode, but someone else said that won't happen. So maybe I can! :thumbsup2

I live in Florida and the heat and humidity are killers. The best product to buy is SPACKLE. (Not real spackle, that's just the product's name :) )
It is a bit pricey, but it lasts forever and then you won't need different makeup. Just apply it before your foundation. (I feel like a commercial all of a sudden.)
Good luck!

what is spackle and where do you get it??? if you reply hardware store, we'll have to stone you!!:teeth:

but this stuff looks so good that I don't look high maintenance either. I'm wondering how you can get ready in 20 minutes! I really need to pick up the pace! Good Luck!

20 minutes isn't my desired condition, just what life affords me with three kids and chaos...........i don't have terribly high expectations with the appearance i guess!!!!!!!

to all you low maintenance, born hot babes, :earboy2:

If it is hot when we go and I assume it will be, I plan on minimal beauty care. By the time I'm done pulling my hair up because it's too hot, spritzing myself with the mister fan all day and having my personal mini fan blowing in my face, makeup won't matter! I plan on applying SPF moisturizer and a tinted lip balm. If I get a chance to shower in the afternoon, then I will make myself pretty.

the problem with the low maintenance plan is if you are a mommy like me then probably the only photos you are in with the family are the ones taken by others on trips like disney.....i really didn't want to look like a mug shot in the photos of me hence the thread

I really like Maybelline Unstoppable brand mascara. It sticks great but comes off with regular cleanser (I use Cetaphil). Maybelline also has "Unstoppable" eyeliner. Love, love, love it!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried it Loreal Sublime and it's okay but it still leaves me a little orange.

How does the tanning gelee smell? Does it leave that weird fake tan smell with you all day or not? Hoping to find something that doesnt smell weird, lol!

The Loreal gelee doesn't smell like the Endless Summer stuff. I try to use that before bed, and then after I shower in the morning use the Loreal Sublime Glow, it has a little bit of tanner in it and the gold sparkly stuff. It smells pretty nice and I don't notice a "tanner" smell to it. I tried an Avon Skin-so-soft Glow product recently and much prefer the Loreal Glow.

I love the Bare Ess. and use their self tanner also! I am very pale and it gives me a great glow! If your skin tone is darker, MAC makes a cream called strobe that gives you a nice glow. They sell that at Macys.

www.makeupalley.com is a wonderful wonderful wonderful site!! There is a product review area that is VERY user friendly and can help anyone with any questions they have about a product, drugstore or department store. I cant say enough good things about this site, I research all products there before i buy!

www. makeupalley.com

For foundation I use Double Wear from Estee Lauder... i have tried everything from cheap to expensive.. it last all day and when i know im going to be gone all day and late into evening i use a primer under it by Smashbox. Best thing since sliced bread lol.

You can get it at QVC for about $20.00. I have been using the same 2 oz jar everyday for months. It is great. I have REALLY sensitive skin and have had no problems. The official name is Laura Geller Spackle Cream. It is a makeup primer (Which until I looked at the jar I had never heard of). You might be able to find other primers for less.
Have a wonderful time!

Foundation: Clinique Work-Out Makeup. Love it.

Self Tanner: I like the Jergen's Natural Glow

Hairspray: Aussie 12 Hour Humidity Hold

Mineral foundations are great, especially in heat and humidity (just moved from MS gulf coast, Katrina refugee, so I know all about living in that steamy weather--YUCK!) but there's no need to pay the high price for Bare Essentials/Minerals whatever they call it stuff. I've also heard a lot of people complain that BE makes them itchy, because it contains bismuth. Even if bismuth doesn't make you itchy, it can cause you to shine more than you want, as well, which is a common complaint I also hear with BE.

Some great ones to try that are much, much less expensive, don't contain bismuth, and have great samples available at decent prices so you can try before you pay for full size and play with colors, etc. are:

southernmagnoliaminerals.c0m (be sure to check her ebay store too; she often runs specials there that you won't find on her regular website)

corycosmetics.c0m

(sorry about the 0's instead of o's, but the stupid board won't allow me to put the url in!)

Those are 2 I can think of off the top of my head. I've tried Cory and she's great. I am planning on trying Southern Magnolia soon, but I have heard many really great reviews of her stuff as well.

For mascara, I swear by Loreal Voluminous waterproof. Yes, it requires eye makeup remover to get it off, but I personally wouldn't gamble with not using a non-waterproof mascara being out in the heat and humidity of Florida all day long. Voluminous doesn't get all cakey and clumpy and flakey like most waterproof mascaras seem to do.

Self-tanner, I don't bother. I'm white as a ghost and I don't give a damn. :rotfl: I don't have enough time in my day to fool with that stuff--I've never found one that isn't a complete pain to put on, then add the drying time--forget it! Then it starts to streak off if you sweat a lot. I find the junk all over the inside of my workout clothes every morning. So I've given up on it!
