Keeping an eye on Tropical Weather 2024

Just check again before you head to your airport. Are you traveling via LHR or LHG? Your flight will not take-off if does not have a flight plan approved to an open MCO.

Dave
Thanks, Manchester but travelling down from Scotland tomorrow night. We have a plan in place if cancelled and at this point I’m not 100% sure if I actually want to go.
Really feel for everyone who lives there.

When was your flight? Ours is Friday 930pm from BOS (expected to land around 12:45am Saturday)
Ours was originally Thursday morning from Austin, TX. All the flights for Friday are already full, so we had to wait until Saturday. DS and his family had a flight from Fort Worth to Orlando at 6:00 pm Thursday that's now Friday morning.

Please pack for cool evenings as the current outlook is for the mid to low 60's overnight through next Wednesday.

It is good still keep a sense of humor and have options for a dinner with family.

Dave
I’m Canadian, 60s is still pretty warm 😂. Like that is t-shirt weather. I am packing a light sweater for the evenings, just in case. I can’t imagine I would need more than that, but thank you for the tip.

CNN just said landfall is now projected around 8 pm

If you have a room cooler/fridge/ice chest in your room and there is room in it, purchase several of the boxed lunches so that a) when you are asked to shelter in place you will have the food and b) you don’t have to make so many trips out. When you get back to your room take the boxes/bags apart so you’re only putting what needs kept cold in the cooler, etc. also check out the gift shop for snacks, donuts, etc. that you can keep in your room. And ask if any of the games are discounted. If it’s a “normal” rain now maybe go to like convenience stores/gas stations and see what they have. Prayers to everyone.

The following activities may be available for you to enjoy at your Disney Resort hotel:
  • Free Disney movies in your Resort hotel room
  • Visit the lobby for surprise Character visits and more family fun
  • Check out the arcade for free play starting at 4:00 PM
  • Visit the fitness center during normal operating hours

This stream has webcams that are currently showing the surge in Port Charlotte and Englewood.

Scary how fast it came up.

For those at Disney for their first ride out: The weather just after a hurricane is always beautiful as the high pressure system follows the low. However, don't get lulled by the calm weather if the "eye" of the storm system passes by. It will seem as if the storm is over, but it's just a moment and the winds will pick up on the backside of the storm. it'll pick up debris, etc if the winds are high enough. The other major danger in going out during the "eye" is it might be hard to see exposed nails, power lines, hazardous debris underneath other layers.

Another thing we learned from prior Disney ride outs is that food lines can get long, and it was little to-go boxes. Having non-perishable proteins for 3-4 days in the room will help give your family options not to have to be in a long line for the to-go boxes. If it's safe to fill the bathtub (not risking a tiny tot falling in) then keeping the bathtub with water helps for options to portion out for: teeth cleaning, toilet flushing, fill bowls for dishware/person cleaning, etc. I don't think Disney ever went to a boil water advisory in the past, but having accessible potable water helped during shelter-in-place timeframes.

Big hugs to all y'all whether evacuating or riding out!
Were you at Disney and lost power/water? Just curious what to expect...all the CMs here keep acting like there's really no chance of them losing power. They said even if there's a loss of power they have their own generators and water system so we should be in good shape. - Honestly I wasn't even going to get the boxed lunches. We're able to get hot food tonight, have breakfast items in the room along with snacks and it seems the resorts should be up and running with hot food tomorrow afternoon, but now I'm second guessing the expectation that's been set?

$10 for the AoA PBJ pack is a small price to pay to feel comfortable for the day. If they have hot food tomorrow, you just keep tonight's purchase wrapped up and donate it to someone on your way out. And if they don't have any food tomorrow, you thank yourself for thinking ahead and being prepared.

Only partially true. Yes, Disney (actually the entity formerly known as Reedy Creek) has generation on property. But they buy most of their power from Duke. That power comes to Disney property via transmission lines which may be damaged during the storm. If the power can't get here, and the generation capability is limited, then you may lose power. Additionally, even if the generation and the transmission lines remain available, the distribution system on property could get disrupted

I do like those packages, but they don't have them at Music, just prepackaged sandwiches that would need refrigerated...hmmm def. hoping we don't lose power.

Thx for the quick reply...def. different than what we've been told, but good to know reality. Fingers crossed we don't lose power.

Buy a few of the kids' meals...they are also totally shelf-stable at Music...pick up 1 per person...

I surmise this means the PV farms don't have energy storage. Even if it did, I can't imagine the amount of GW would be required to feed the resorts.

Correct - there are no batteries at the PV farms. I suspect that the major one on 429 would supply enough power to feed the resorts once the sun is up. But no way could they feed the resorts and the parks.

Keeping up with this thread. Kids and I spent the day in the room at Boardwalk. I haven’t even ventured out to see what’s going on in the hotel. DH went to HS this morning. Just about a walk-on for everything .
Raining and sounds very windy out there now. We have a lot of food in the room, but great majority would require heating up, so hope power will stay on…
Watching WESH all day. I hope the tornadoes weren’t too bad on the east coast . And hope landfall won’t be as bad as originally predicted.
Thanks to all posting here with suggestions . Been in many hurricanes, tropical storms in Louisiana , but not in Florida, at Disney.

The risk of power loss is extremely low. Probably not zero but very very low. The biggest cause of outages in a storm is debris down on lines, since Disney’s grid is underground, that won’t happen. They also have a lot more redundancies built into their grid than your standard grid. It’s like how there are redundancies in place to keep the lights on at hospitals.
