...by sharing my purchase today, Canon Rebel XTi! This was after a friend dropped some serious cash on a Nikon D-200 and a few lenses.

I picked up the XTi with the kit lense, and thanks to price matching, I also got the EF 75-300MM. I figure these will get me through until I can pick up the Sigma as well as some other lenses.

Now I just need to get out to one of the coasts and visit the house of mouse!

enjoy it. the xti is an awesome camera that you will have a lot of fun with.

And get some big memory, for the camera and the computer

Congrats!

COngrats on a beautiful and powerful DSLR! I've been salivating at the spec sheet on your model... and thinking about getting it or waiting in anguish for a 30D replacement. The XTi seems to wipe out the 30D for a lot less money so what's an enthusiast to do???

At any rate... I was going to offer a suggestion on memory... how about a 4 GIG Microdrive? They have 'em on eBay for under $50 including shipping! Check out the active and closed listing history! I am looking at 'em too even though I am comfortable with a 1GB and 512 card. I had a 2GB Microdrive but it got fried by an electric anti-seasickness wrist band I was wearing on a cruise. The seas were getting rough and I cranked the charge intensity up and then I felt a spark from my finger tips travel into the DSLR... and ZAP... the Microdrive was dead. I fell back on my 512 CF backup card and bought a 1GB card on my return home. I can get by on the 1.5GB of storage ... but YOU have a 10MB sensor and could probably use 4GB of storage. I would estimate that 4GB would enable 1200 full size FINE images since DP review suggests a full sized image at fine used approximatly 3,100 KB. Now... if you're shooting RAW + Jpeg then each image uses an average of 15,260 KB... so you would have only 240-250 frames! Unless my math is off.... :confused3

I picked up the sandisk ultra III 1G as a starter, a couple friends of mine have some transend (sp?) cf cards they got at Fry's for a good price, and have had no problems. I'm going to stay away from the microdrives, I'm not sold on them yet ;)

On my 1G card, I can get over 200 pics shooting on full size/fine. It's a good start, but I KNOW I will need more. I just had to get the wife past the shock of getting the camera, accessories are coming later ;) Plus I wanted a good card so I could start shooting.

I already have a list in my head I need to commit to paper or a document on my pc. The battery grip, extra batteries, higher capacity cf cards, eye piece extender, and I'm thinking the sigma 18-200 lense, but I'm not sold on that yet.

Oh, and a nice bag. Anyone have moderately priced, yet good bad recommendations? I'd like to have maybe two, one to carry all my gear (so I have to think room to grow) and something for maybe a lense or two and a bit more space for anything extra.

how nice of wife :goodvibes
check out the canon backpack for a storage type bag..it fits my rebel xt body with 28-135 attached, 4 other lens, filter wallet, card wallet, notebook ( 8x10) plus space for extension tubes, macro filters, remote etc...just to heavy to carry fully loaded :rotfl: and it's pretty good priced, about 40 depending on where and if it's on sale http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=770898

Awesome! I'll check that one out. It sounds like it might be what I am looking for.

In person, my CompUSA had some really good deals on bags. I did not get it, but there was a Lowepro there for ~$18 that everywhere else was charging ~$30. It was the exact same model.

Do you rent out your wife? I could use her generosity services around the 25th of next month. I'd gladly trade you a model who has a lot of patience and loves animals and the outdoors (why else would she always suggest that I sleep outside in the dog house?)

hahaha, there is always two sides to every coin, one side is me smiling hold my camera, the other side is covered with dollar signs and my wife smiling.

I did ask her, she said you couldn't afford her. I guess it's time for me to get that 2nd and 3rd job

:lmao: husband got me my rebel xt for our 30 anniversay last summer...he claims "it's the gift he keeps giving" since every so often i come up with something else he can add to it...i think i'm anniversaried out till about the yr 2010 at least :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: all he got was an ipod and even with every accessory he could think of didn't come close to mine on the spend-o-meter :rotfl2:

See, at this point, I absolutely have everything for my Rebel XT that I could possibly need. So now we get to move into the Wants :)

Actually I am probably set for quite a while. Last thing I picked up was the external flash.

I honestly think that the next thing I am likely to buy besides maybe more memory is the 40 or 50D or whatever happens to be out when it is time to upgrade the body. When I do that, I will probably also get a good lens for it in the 18-xx range so that the old XT can be passed down.

My wife see's them all as wants, not needs ;)

That said, I just got done looking at some VERY nice lenses, one was only 4 times the cost of the body!

There is ALWAYS a catch, we actually stopped by the jewelry store before buying the camera...

Kyle, yes, you need to go on. I'm researching the above ;) Although bigger hd/external hd is not necessary, I do have a dual layer DVD burner and I regularly archive photos, plus the laptop travels with us, it has a single layer dvd burner and plenty of hd space. I do need the trip though to Disney country...

The 70-200MM f/2.8 IS is the $1,700 one right?

What is the opinion on the eye piece extender? I know you lose like 30% magnification, is it that bad? Should I just keep a nice cloth to wipe off the nose prints on the lcd?

Nose prints really aren't that much of a problem, but I hit the info button all the time....

Yep the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is the $1700 one. Great lens. If I must go on then how about the 400mm f/2.8 or the 500 f/4 (plus a 1.4x extender) for the photo safari to Africa, the 17-55mm f/2.8 is always a good standard zoom to have, great in low light situations; the 85mm f/1.8 or 100mm f/2 are good ones to have if you might happen to have kids that do indoor activies, Canon also just came out with a 50mm f/1.2. There are tons and tons of filters out there. There is almost to much stuff (ALMOST!!)

As for the eye piece thing, I say deal with the nose prints. The view finder is small enough. No need to make it smaller.

Ahhhhh so many lenses, so little money! I don't think I won the lottery last night either. If we did, my wife already said I can get the EOS-1DS Mark II :)

I need a good UV and circular polarizer. If I was able to get everything I think I needed...
