Just signed up for Everest!

I believe that in years past the registration included a one day pass to the Animal Kingdom but that is not the case this year. I think someone said the registration fee is a bit less this year but that it doesn't include the ticket.

Hey guys - just saw this on the FAQ:

Is this race walker friendly?
Both runners and walkers who can maintain a 16-minute per mile pace are welcome to participate in the Expedition Everest™ Challenge.

What happens if I can't keep up with the pacing requirement?
Anyone not able to maintain the pace may be picked up and transported to the finish. You may be picked up at any point along the course for not maintaining pace.

So that answers the 'can we walk' question!

My DH and I signed up for the race this year! It'll be our first Disney running event. I had planned on running the Princess Half this February but during training I tore the ligaments in my knee and had to stop running. Signed up for the EEC and once I started training my knee problems came back. Going for an MRI this week to see what's wrong. I'm hoping that I can at least walk the race if I have to!

Hopefully it won't be anything serious so I can get back into running. I had never run before...like ever....and I was really starting to enjoy it. Now I even miss it!

I think Buffy and I have both mentioned the same fear - getting pulled off the course! :scared1: I read that you have to keep a 16 min/mile pace. I have been assuming that you can run/walk as long as you keep that pace. I am hoping someone who has done one of these races can tell us for sure?? On the treadmill I run 6.0/6.5 and walk around 3.6. Then I do intervals of walking and then running for 1 minute at 7.0/7.5/8.0 until I get to at least 3.1 miles.

Wow! That is really fast to me! Yikes! No wonder I can run 10 minutes sets. I'm barely running!

That is great to hear! Last night I started week 4, which I was VERY nervous about . It includes running 3 min and 5 min. It wasn't pretty but I DID IT!!!! It's really encouraging to hear you say that adding minutes seems easier after getting to 5.

Sandy

It is true for me. Even now the first 5 minutes are a little tough. Then when I hit minute 5, everything eases up a bit. But going as slow as I do may be part of my trick too.

After my last post this one is going to be a bit strange, but I can't believe it! I just finished a 5K at our gym's track with DH. We did 5K in 35 minutes! All was going great until the last lap. DH challenged me to a final sprint. Now I am icing a pulled groin. :headache: Luckily it doesn't feel too bad. A day of rest should have it back to normal. I am so thrilled to be able to keep up that pace. It was so much easier to run on the track than on the treadmill. And running with DH was great too! :thumbsup2

Well I think that is a fabulous time! I am no where near that speed yet!

Thanks! To be honest, I really surprised myself. I wasn't doing anything like that on the treadmill. I'm not sure if it was moving to a track or running with DH. But it seemed so much easier than running 4.8 mph on the treadmill. I was blown away that I averaged 5.3 mph. That was a run/walk. We did .2 miles walk and then .8 miles run the first mile. Then the next two miles alternated .5 run and .2 walk. And of course we ran the last .1 mile. That was when I pulled the groin. But it is feeling pretty good today. I just did a 30 minute walk to let it rest today. We'll see if that was a fluke this coming Sunday. We have decided to do this every Sunday to see if we can decrease the time. But I am not going to push it again.

Great job on the run Eva!! I think I walk/run a 5K faster outside then I do on the treadmill. We have a trail that's 1.6 miles and I can just walk that in under 30 minutes, and not at a very fast pace either. We are supposed to get a break in the weather later this week so when DD is at school I'm going to try to head over there and see where I'm at speed wise.

I did C25K week 3 day 1 yesterday, that was tough. I am definitely repeating that week. I seem to be dragging my right leg a bit when I get tired so I'm going to see my chiropractor and then try to do some leg strengthening exercises. I'm left handed so I know my right side is weaker but it's really starting to irk me.

I've pulled that muscle before and it HURTS! You wanna be real careful not to work it to hard so it doesn't get worse on you! I hate the injuries that come along with our intervals. So far, I've been pretty good & healthy. My intervals are getting longer as I'm trying to train for the 5K in September and October. Then moving on (i HOPE) to the half marathon in February 2012. :scared1:

Good advice! I tried running/walking yesterday and did just fine for about 2 miles. Then the stupid thing started feeling tight and a bit stretched feeling with a twinge here and there. So I walked the last mile. Still did the 5K in about 40 minutes. But I think I will stick to walking and my step aerobics for a few more days. Strange, but the step aerobics doesn't really bother it.

Good Luck on your training!

I just signed up for it today! Two of my friends are also doing it as a team (they did the Princess 5K today as their first one), but I'll be by myself. This will be my first 5K! I'm a little nervous, but mostly excited! :)

Eva - that is awesome! The fastest I have done 5K so far is 36min 15sec. I have only done treadmill so far. I am anxious to try outdoor when the snow clears.

We just returned from WDW for our family trip. Had an amazing time!!! We told DS on his bday that he and I are going for the race. He is SO excited! It's great - he and I can talk about it now! I haven't run in close to 2 weeks because of the trip. I may have to go back to week 4 and see how it goes.

I just signed up for EEC this will be my first 5K/race. I am very excited that I get to run my first race at Disney. I am also concerned about the ability to keep the pace and I was wondering if you do get pulled for not being able to keep the pace would they still allow you to complete the obstacle course and/or scavenger hunt?

I have no idea goldylox, I'm interested in knowing too.

My update:
I'm up to 2.25 miles with a walk/run on the treadmill. I can do it in about 38 minutes.
I did manage a one mile run/walk in 16:03 which is my best time yet but I don't think I can sustain that for 3 miles. But I'm getting better, I'm not as winded as usual. I finished up the dreaded week 3 on C25K and the last day was actually pretty good.

WTG! Small Steps bring great rewards :)

I'm trying to take 8 min off my last 5K time which is proving challanging.. Least I still have awhile to make that happen :)

I think I'm going to sign up for this as well. I fly in that morning, so it's doable. I did the Princess 1/2 Marathon last month (my first), and it was very exciting. This race looks like so much fun.

I haven't run since the 1/2 - I need to get back into it.

I finally got my confirmation from signing up at the Princess Expo- My poor credit card has both Everest and the DLR 1/2 on it.. Running is expensive :P

I also found my "magic pace" on the treadmill to get me to my desired time. Now to be able to get 3 miles in- Last night was a longer run so varied up the speeds to get 7 miles in

I completed week 5, day 1 today! :cool1: I was soooo intimidated by an 8 min run. I kept thinking about what Eva said that for her things get better after the first 5 minutes, and I really think it did!! Yipee!!

Completed week 4/day 2 today after running/walking 1.70 miles with DS14. And I got to do it outside!!! I know I ran at least a full 5K, in about an hour.

I need to figure out how to get the GPS app to talk to the C25K app, or I need to bite the bullet and buy the add on GPS to C25K.

I felt pretty good, tired but good. DS took me off road to run the usual course for his team. I'm not comfortable running Cross Country so he finished his 5K in the woods while I did mine on the paved path around the lake. DS caught up with me about 1/2 way through C25K and even though I ran slow enough for him to walk, he stuck with me. Such a good kid! LOL

Right now I'm going to focus on my endurance and I'll worry about the speed later.

I am signing me and one of my best friends up for this this weekend!!! I just got back from the Princess Half and can't wait to go back!

We need a good name though - Both of our names begin with T; we both work in newspapers; she has been one of my best friends for more than 10 years; we live in two separate states; this is her first running event ever - Any ideas?!!

Also, has anyone booked rooms at the All Star Sports? Are they still available? AND how much are the discounted tickets for participants?

TIA!! So excited!
