Hi everyone,
I just broke my ankle and I am leaving for Disney this Sunday. I am also 2 months pregnant....ahh good times! lol. My question is how does the whole handicap thing work in Disney? My doctor has advised me that I will need a wheelchair while touring the parks. I know I can rent one at the parks but how does this work on the rides? Are there seperate entrances for wheelchairs and can my family join me? What about for parades and fireworks? I am just very nervous about being in Disney in a wheelchair.
Thanks for the help!
Jamie

There are special viewing areas for parades and fireworks that you and your family will be able to use. As you know Disney rents both standard and electric wheelchairs. Some rides (SSE for example) have separate entrances for guests in wheelchairs. The greeter at the main entrance will direct you to the proper location. At other rides you will be able to wait in the same line as everyone else. Also some rides have special wheelchair vehicles (Small World and Winnie the Pooh for example). On these rides you will be able to remain in the wheelchair the entire time while on others you will need to get out and move the vehicle. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

I'm so sorry you broke your ankle, but congrats on your pg!

Go over to the disABILITIES board on the DIS. They are great and will be able to answer all your questions and give you more details. Have a great trip and take care of yourself.

ETA: the disABILITIES board also has info on renting a wheelchair for length of stay at WDW vs renting one from a local company that can be delivered to your hotel.

Sorry to hear about your ankle - but to let you know I was there in November and have a bad foot (needs surgery but there is no time) After 2 days of limping around a CM suggested to me to get a wheel chair - very nice CM - showed us where, etc. After renting the chair I went over to a customer service area just to the left by the firestaton when you enter the MK - they gave me some type of pass - asked how many were in our party, etc.... my kids had a lot of fun pushing me around and it was very easy to get onto all the attractions etc. After a couple of days my foot was better and it was time to come home. I think the chair was around $10 to rent. I hope you foot heals soon! Congrats on baby too!!!!!

hi, sorry to hear about your injury, When my daughter basically did the same injury, we needed a wheelchair full time. It was hard for her to walk from the bus stop to the park entrance everyday (to keep getting new chairs.)we were having to carry her! The hotel gave us one to use for the entire trip~no fee! We kept the same chair all weekend. Try asking your hotel in advance to make sure they hold one for you. this was a big money saver and time too!! hope this helps :flower:
my hotel was POFQ

All of the Disney resorts will provide a complimentary wheelchair for your entire vacation on a first come first first serve basis. They have a few but are limited. You will see these around the parks as they will have the resort logo on the back. Unfortunatly the OP is not staying at a Disney resort.

If you can, look to a local medical supply store to rent from. This may be the easiest for you. It would give you a wc to use in the airports and you will know that it is definitely yours.

Here are a couple of threads that will help:

didn't realize she was staying off site untill I went back and read her signature. I wonder if offsite hotels offer any assistance like the disney resorts?

Thanks! My family and I rented a house for the week so I don't think I can get a wheelchair from them..(allstarvacationhomes.com). My mom has an AP pass so she thinks she can get a discount on the wheelchair. I can walk short distances so from the parking lot to the park should not be too bad.
I am soooo excited! I just can't wait to get to Disney!!!!!!
Thank you again for your help!

The parks rent manual wheelchair and ECVs (power scooters), which are a bit different than power wheelchairs. (Power wheelchairs are controlled with a joystick and take some individual setup and more practice to drive. The parks don't rent them at all and the off-site rental places only rent them to people who already have experience with them).
There is no discount for AP holders renting wheelchairs or ECVs at the parks. There is a multi-day option that includes a discount, but it may be suspended during busy times.
If you check out the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of the disABILITIES Board (thanks triplefigs and ktglads), you will find information on the various places/ways to get wheelchairs/ECVs, boarding rides, a link to the official WDW site disabilities information with lists of what attractions you could stay in the wheelchair for.
Most of the lines are what is called Mainstream Access, which means wheelchair/ECV users wait in the same line with everyone else. If there is a separate area/entrance for wheelchair users, the policy is that 5 people plus the person using the wheelchair can use the entrance. As was noted, there are special areas for wheelchair/ECV users for parades and Illuminations. If it's busy, they sometimes limit access to the person with a wheelchair plus one or 2 members of their party. You do want to get there early because the areas fill up quickly sometimes.
There is no special viewing area for fireworks (I guess the idea is that they are above you, so no problem with people standing in front of you).

If you don't have a wheelchair with you, you have a few options for parking:
  • You can try to get a temporary handicapped parking permit issued by your state (your doctor may have the form that needs to be filled out or most states have a copy of it on their website.) That would allow you to park in the handicapped parking areas. There are "shuttle" wheelchairs available in the handicapped parking lot to get from there to the park entrance. NOTE: They are first come, first serve and may not have any wheelchairs.
  • You can tell the parking lot CMs that you have a mobility problem and ask to park near the end of a row so that you have a shorter walk to the parking lot tram.

I fell and tore a ligament in my foot half way through a trip back in June 2004. We were able to rent a wheelchair wherever we went-- AND we barely waited in line. Usually 10 minutes in, a CM would come and either have us go in the fastpass line, or give us FP tickets to come back later. My family actually loved it!

That's the exception rather than the rule (just so people don't expect that's what always happens).

I highly suggest the ECV over the wheelchair. It will be easier on everyone and you will have controlover your own destiny :rotfl2:
