Hi fellow DIS'ers! Just got back from my first solo, and I am hooked!
Stayed for 5 nights, 6 days at POP all alone and it was awesome! I have an AP which was also great because it helped sell my husband on the idea that I could do a solo on a budget
Here are my thoughts and experiences on going solo:
- staying in the room alone was wonderful - I was never picking up after anyone, the bathroom was mine whenever I wanted it (no asking who wanted to shower first!), I could watch whatever I wanted on tv without sharing the remote; earplugs rule because the walls are paper thin!
- when I'm with my family, I find it hard to get going in the morning, especially trying to get everyone ready and out the door; by myself, I found I was awake and excited to get going every morning at 7 am - went and got my tea with my YOAMD mug, had my breakfast bar and got ready at my own pace; left whenever I was ready to go to whatever park I talked myself into!
- I have done WDW with the small children, so I felt no guilt waiting for a bus by myself while I watched families with small children with the parents looking exhausted and the kids having meltdowns - been there, paid my 'dues' and totally enjoyed my selfish 'me' time
- with my family, we always seem to plan our days - which park, which attractions, etc. Being solo, I just 'winged' it - went to AK to ride EE and safari, then decided I would have lunch at Pizzafari and then catch a bus to HS to ride ToT - didn't have to run that idea by anyone for approval!
- I didn't have to say no to anyone who wanted ice cream because we were watching our nickels and dimes - it was just me, so if I wanted a Mickey ice cream sandwich, I bought one (and I did - yum!)
- single rider lines rule at EE and TT - saved fastpasses for other rides!
All in all, my solo trip was wonderful! It was peaceful yet exciting at the same time. Sure, I missed my family, but DH called every night (told him every other would have been fine!), and time seemed to fly because I was having so much fun. I'm sure I could have handled an even longer trip, but definitely no less than the five nights I spent on this trip.
Hoping someday I can go solo again - for now we have a family trip planned for May/June, but DH promised I could have one day to myself if I would let him try one day on his own (I think he's intrigued by this 'solo' idea, but too scared to try it all at once!). Even the kids enjoy a day to themselves just chillin' around the resort.
So if you're nervous about going solo, don't be - just go for it! You won't be sorry. Besides, you never feel 'alone' at WDW. There's always someone to chat with in line or on a bus, and you're always surrounded by other people and families. So enjoy! If you like it as much as I did, your face will hurt after a couple of days because you won't stop smiling!
