Hi fellow DIS'ers! Just got back from my first solo, and I am hooked!:thumbsup2
Stayed for 5 nights, 6 days at POP all alone and it was awesome! I have an AP which was also great because it helped sell my husband on the idea that I could do a solo on a budget :goodvibes
Here are my thoughts and experiences on going solo:
- staying in the room alone was wonderful - I was never picking up after anyone, the bathroom was mine whenever I wanted it (no asking who wanted to shower first!), I could watch whatever I wanted on tv without sharing the remote; earplugs rule because the walls are paper thin!
- when I'm with my family, I find it hard to get going in the morning, especially trying to get everyone ready and out the door; by myself, I found I was awake and excited to get going every morning at 7 am - went and got my tea with my YOAMD mug, had my breakfast bar and got ready at my own pace; left whenever I was ready to go to whatever park I talked myself into!
- I have done WDW with the small children, so I felt no guilt waiting for a bus by myself while I watched families with small children with the parents looking exhausted and the kids having meltdowns - been there, paid my 'dues' and totally enjoyed my selfish 'me' time
- with my family, we always seem to plan our days - which park, which attractions, etc. Being solo, I just 'winged' it - went to AK to ride EE and safari, then decided I would have lunch at Pizzafari and then catch a bus to HS to ride ToT - didn't have to run that idea by anyone for approval!
- I didn't have to say no to anyone who wanted ice cream because we were watching our nickels and dimes - it was just me, so if I wanted a Mickey ice cream sandwich, I bought one (and I did - yum!)
- single rider lines rule at EE and TT - saved fastpasses for other rides!

All in all, my solo trip was wonderful! It was peaceful yet exciting at the same time. Sure, I missed my family, but DH called every night (told him every other would have been fine!), and time seemed to fly because I was having so much fun. I'm sure I could have handled an even longer trip, but definitely no less than the five nights I spent on this trip.

Hoping someday I can go solo again - for now we have a family trip planned for May/June, but DH promised I could have one day to myself if I would let him try one day on his own (I think he's intrigued by this 'solo' idea, but too scared to try it all at once!). Even the kids enjoy a day to themselves just chillin' around the resort.

So if you're nervous about going solo, don't be - just go for it! You won't be sorry. Besides, you never feel 'alone' at WDW. There's always someone to chat with in line or on a bus, and you're always surrounded by other people and families. So enjoy! If you like it as much as I did, your face will hurt after a couple of days because you won't stop smiling!:cool1:

YAY!!!! Wasnt it absolutely wonderful:banana: It was nice to meet you and btw I planned my next solo already....May 16-19 :yay: I was so surprised by how "not lonely" I was. My only bitter sweet moment was "Wishes" and btw I forgot to tell you you didnt miss out on anything by not doing Fantasmic that night, the wind was blowing in just the WRONG direction and instead of just getting misted we got soaked ... I found that CMs seem to cater to you more when you are solo...almost as if they feel sorry for you which is kind of funny.... I seemed to notice the children meltdowns more this time than I ever have before...lol...as well as the parent melt downs....which I must say I always notice...

I am glad you had such a good time !!! Yay for solo DW vacations, may there be many more!!!! :cheer2:

congrats on making it thru your first solo trip. i know what you mean about children melt downs. it is funny how much more you notice them when you are without kids. i can't wait to go again. next time, i plan to take things alot slower and take it all in. have fun planning your next solo trip.

I love reading your post1 I am going on my first solo trip May5-9th, staying at AS Sports. I am getting really anxious. My hubby says that I will be bored to death- no way. I will do alot like you have did- get up early in the morning and not have to worry about anyone else taking their sweet old time. I have never been to any of the parks at opening time and this time I am going to make it!

You will so NOT be bored to death~no way. This was my FIRST time solo as well and the only bittersweet moment I felt was when I was at Wishes, other than that it was so awesome/ It was nice to get up when I wanted to, I didnt have to share the bathroom, I could eat when and where I wanted to. I love all the rides the same as my DS but he is almost 6'5" and walks so fast I am dead by the time 9pm rolls around when I go with him. I have never been able to tour the WS before because he walks so fast that by the time we get half way around I am so exhausted I have to wait for the boat and just go back and barely make it back to the bus stop :lmao: There are so many more things you will notice when you go solo, and so many different ways to appreciate the things you already love. You will find out that the CMs give you much more attention that you ever had and the servers at the restaurants seem to want to stay at your table and talk so you dont really even have meals alone....:) ;) There is NOTHING negative that I can say about going solo. DW is someplace that I will always want to share with the ppl I love but I am now hooked and can seemyself doing WDW solo at least twice a year, maybe more. Just go with the intention of having FUN, and if you start feeling a bit melancholy...STOP...and just think about where you are at...u r at DISNEY WORLD!!!!! YAY!!!!!

Loved your post. How ironic that DH says to me this week that he has a software conference in Orlando 5/4-7 - did I want to leave the kids with my parents & come along? Um YES!!! I love Disney with the kids but I've always dreamed of going solo. He'll be busy with the convention & after-work events so I'll be 99% solo. He'll be offsite at Springhill Suites - which is a WDW Good Neighbor Hotel so they do have shuttles to the theme parks. Limited shuttles, but free. So Lustergirl - I see your dates overlap mine - if you see a lady just sitting on a bench at a park taking it all in for hours that would be me! I really just want to see it all, people watch & take my time. I might do a tour as well. I'm not even into the rides & attractions that much, I may just eat my way around the World & sight see! Plus it's the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival - I'm sure that will provide me with plenty of things to look at.

Jamie what are your dates that you will be there? I'd love to take a tour - anyone do this? The Keys to the Kingdom tour looks great, as does the Behind the Seeds tour at Epcot. It's the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival though, so Behind the Seeds might be overkill. But it's only $14! Maybe I should just splurge & do both, I might not get the chance to do either of these again!

I'm there 5/4-5/13, but no tours for me at this point. I'm testing out touring plans for a May 2009 trip with three toddler grandchildren and their parents, so I'll need to stay fairly well on schedule. :goodvibes

This could be me as well. I plan on taking my time. I have never really explored the World Showcase- this time around I am going exploring with each country!

I plan to eat my way around World Showcase! In December I went to WDW with just DS7 & since we stayed at the Dolphin, we walked over to World Showcase every night. While he worked on his kids mask, I got to take in all the sights & sounds of the different countries, and loved it! I can't wait to go back & do that again. I saw a purse in Morocco that I wished I would have gotten, now I will go get it!

That was my favourite park to do solo - make sure you stop in France and visit the patisserie (sp?) or boulangerie - the bake shop! I had the best ham and cheese croissant warmed up for only $3, and sat outside at a little cafe table and took it all in - wonderful!!! I even waited in line with a bunch of little kids and parents at the Toy Store in United Kingdom to get my absolutely necessary photo with Eeyore and friends!:goodvibes
And without my whining teens, I was able to stop at every country that offered a movie and actually enjoy them. Of course, the gift shops were the best part, because I could actually browse around and not worry about where everyone went while I was looking.
Enjoy!

Make sure you email me with the next dates you will be there....I know it was sometime around when me and G are going but with my memory I have forgotten when

I loved reading your post - It reminded me of my first (and only!) solo so far. I also stayed at POP but for a week and flew from the UK on my own too. I really understood when you said how much you enjoyed doing things for YOU! I have loved being at Disney with my kids but one of them was always too hot, too tired, too thirsty, didn't feel right etc etc so it was great to do what ever I wanted without having to think about anyone else!

When I got back I bought 100 SSR DVC points so I could go back for a week every year on my own (until I am 93!) but DH wants to come with me this year and DD has asked to come with me next year . . . so much for that solo time!!!

I, too, am doing wdw solo the end of this month. No quite as solo as you did it. I am traveling with three girlfriends, but am leaving the dh and kids home. We all went together in November. I loved reading about your "alone" time. It is nice to regroup sometimes and remember that "yes, you are still a person, not just a mom and wife". Good for you! I encourage you to do it as often as you can!
