We spent 3 days at Universal at the RPH then moved on to Disney to POR. The first thing my 12 year old said about the resort was "Wow it is really quiet here", and it was very quiet and peaceful. If you want excitement this is not your resort. If you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy activities like surry bike riding, fishing and carriage rides then this is the place for you. I really liked the change of pace after spending all day in the very crowded parks.

Check In- It took us about 20 minutes. At first there was a long line but they opened up a few extra windows. Everyone was friendly and I was given a room in the AB section as I had requested. We checked in about 6:00 PM

Room- We were given the AB section room number 3829 (this was not the building number that I had requested). It was a good long walk from everything but not quite as far as some of the other rooms. There was the North bus depot near by but we never used it to be picked up because we were always at the food court for breakfast then went on to the parks from there. Our view was of another building near by and a small yard with some foliage and bushes. I really liked our view compared to the ones that got the parking lot view. The parking lot is right up against the building and it looks like you are staying in a regular motel. I would try really hard not to get a room that faced the parking lot. Our room was really quite cozy. It was in a corner and it was very quiet. I don't recall ever hearing the neighbors. The actual rooms are small but they were not to bad. The bathroom though is so small that when you are using the toilet you feel as though you are almost sitting in the shower. :sad2: The rooms do have free use of refrigerators.

Food court- It was very busy even at 7:30 AM. The place though is very big and can accomodate everyone pretty easily. We only had one problem when the food section that serves french toast and pancakes had a problem with their grill one morning. (I think they did not get it warmed up in time). My children wanted the choc. chip pancakes but the line was so backed up that we just couldn't wait long enough. Usually though things went pretty smoothly and it took us about 20 minutes to 1/2 hour for breakfast from start to finish. For a family of 4 the cost of each breakfast was about 26 to 30 dollars. The variety of food was OK but we did start to get tired of the breakfast menu. I was dissappointed that they did not serve Mickey Waffles.

Boatwrights- We ate 1 breakfast and 1 dinner here. I got the banana stuffed french toast and decided that I hate cooked bananas. My DS got the same thing though and liked it. My DH got the steak and eggs and the steak was small and tough. My other DS had pancakes but doesn't remember if he liked them or not.(They looked like the same ones in the food court). The bill came to 47 dollars. This meal was certainly not worth the money and we did not try to eat breakfast there again. My DH and I ate dinner there and I got the prime rib and he got the pot roast. Both meals were adequate but nothing to write home about. The bread was the same corn bread that is fixed in the food court. The bill came to about 60 bucks. (No alcohol included).

Arcade- It was actually very good. There was a lot of variety and my DSs just loved it. We took the kids to Disney Quest but it was so crowded that it was almost impossible to play anything. The POR arcade was not free but at least it was not crowded and the kids could play on anything they wanted.

The bus system- Now this gets kind of complicated. I don't know if what we experianced is typical but I will explain what I observed and everyone will just have to take it with a grain of salt knowing that I never asked anyone how the system worked and I can only tell you what what we experianced for the 7 days that we were there.

1. To Epcot- The bus stopped first at POFQ and was full and we had to stand. When the bus was full it did not stop at the other bus depots around POR (there are 4). I want to say the bus stop at EPCOT is around number 6 but I could be wrong.

2. Down Town Disney and Typhoon Lagoon- The bus stopped first at POR but would sometimes when we were going back to the resort it would drop off the POFQ guests first. The bus stop at the TL and DTD was number 1.

3. Blizzard Beach and Animal Kingdom. The bus stopped first at the POFQ. It generally was not full and we usually got a seat. I cannot remember the bus stop numbers at these parks.

4. MGM- The bus stopped first at POFQ. The bus was not full and we got a seat. I want to say the bus stop number at the park was around 12.

5. Magic Kingdom- We had our own bus. It did not stop at the POFQ at all. The bus stop number at the park was 13.

I found the bus system to be actually pretty good and we never had to wait very long. The longest I probably ever had to wait was about 10 minutes.

Boat ride to DTD- I liked the ride it was very relaxing. It took about 20 minutes to get there. It seemed though when you take the boat as opposed to the bus you had to walk a lot further to get to the other side of DTD.

River Roost Bar- There is live entertainment from the Piano Man Wed. thru Sat. starting at 8:30 PM. He plays the piano and sings and makes jokes. He is pretty good and if you find yourself without anything else to do in the evening you may want to try him out.

TV programming- All I can say is Yuck!! At Universal the TV programming is very extensive so we were shocked to find that there just isn't anything to watch on TV when you are at Disney. I guess they figure if you are in your room watching TV then you are not out spending money. I am not sure if all resorts have the same channels available but I can vouch that at POR the selection is very poor.

General Store- They have genreal food items such as milk, orange juice, donuts, cereal etc. They also have some medications and personal items available. There is also sell the typical Souvenirs.

Main Pool- It is well themed with water fall areas for childen to splash around in and a slide. It is small and gets very crowded. There is a pool bar with a varitey of drinks and some food items. You need to wear some kind of bug off spray when you are there. I got 10 bug bites the first day and looked like I had some kind of disease for the rest of the week.

mousekeeping- It was excellant. They even made little things with with the washcloths that held our toothbrushes and my makeup.

Well that is all for now. I hope this information is helpful. :flower:

Thanks for the overall review of your stay at POR. I'll be there in a couple of weeks so I enjoyed reading your experience with the bus system. :flower:

Im not sure what you were expecting when you booked your reservation at POR, but the quietness is the beauity of it... Anyways, I agree, all the Disney resorts have a pretty bad TV station selection, but I dunno about you, but when I go to Disney, Im usually watching TV for about 10 mins a day, so it really dosent matter to me. Sounds like you had a good time. Its hard to compare Universal to Disney because they are both pretty unique (Although Disney is much better!!)

I wasn't comparing really just stating the facts. We actually enjoying watching TV as we are getting ready for bed and as we are getting ready for the day so the TV was disappointing. We actually loved the quietness of the resort as I said in my post. "To each his Own".

Cindybell....were you part of the Pampered Chef invasion at POR? I've stayed there many times and have never seen it with that many people...ever!!! Check-out was incredible. We were at DME counter at 9:00 and there was nobody in line. But 2 hrs later the line was huge!!! No place to sit and wait for your bus, inside or out. Incredible.
But, our check-in was quick. They did have a room for us in bldg 34. When I said they must think we're naughty because they keep putting us in either 34 or 35, the CM said that if I didn't mind waiting she could put me in bldg 14. Ah, yeah, sure...that's worth a wait. So, it was about 11:30 and we waited until 3 for our room but if we had been any closer to the main bldg I would have been in it!!! Housekeeping was okay. The maid did come to the door on Sat morning at about 8:30 and seemed somewhat put out when I told her that my daughter was still sleeping. It had been EMH at MK the night before!!! The room never got made up until about 4ish that day.

But, we do love POR. For the most part our stay was just as nice as other stays there. I will say that Bell Services went out of their way to be helpful. Perhaps Beach Club Bell Services could take a lesson from them. We checked out of BCV on Friday morning, about 8:30. Left our bags with Bell Services to be transferred over to POR. We were told they would arrive at POR between 1 and 3. No problem for me since I figured we wouldn't be able to get into a room much before 3 anyway. So off to MK and breakfast we went. It was too hot for us, so we went to POR to check in. After we got into our room at 3 I went over to Bell Serv. to check on my luggage since we really needed a swim. No bags yet!! The poor girl there just looked at me and said..."But they should have been here an hour ago!" She called BC and was told.."Well, we're really busy here today and haven't made the transfers yet." So, back to my room I went. I called them back around 4:15 and spoke to the same poor girl. She said there was nothing yet but she would call BC again and get back to me. SHe called me back to tell me that they hadn't yet transferred the bags but would do so immediatly. Yeah, sure. Bell Services finally called me around 4:45-5ish to tell me they were bringing me my bags....finally.

I didn't think you were complaining at all in your post. I appreciate your honesty since DH and I are staying at POR in a few months. I'm looking forward to it, it sounds like a wonderful resort.

Thanks for the review. Gives me a better idea since I will be staying at POR in a couple of months.

I am not to worried about the food court since we don't normally eat breakfast, at least with your review I know now I won't be missing much

Thanks Cincybell for the great (& very detailed) review. RPR is one of our favorite resorts, we even like it better than Hard Rock at Universal (except the walk to the parks is longer).

I've been a little worried about staying at POR for our upcoming trip in Oct. We normally stay in a deluxe (we are a family of 5 & I can usually find a deal) and this is our first stay in a moderate (best deal was free food and staying in a moderate ;) ). You said POR was quieter, did you have much of a shock other than that when you moved from RPR to POR? I've read so many good things about POR, but I'm still trying not to build it up too much in my mind so I won't be disappointed. (Wow do I sound like a hotel snob? :sad2: sorry :guilty: ) On one of our previous trips we drove by POR and I saw the rooms that faced the parking lot and I thought exactly what you said, that it looks like a typical motel. However, after looking at other pictures on the internet and seeing the rest of the resort, it does look beautiful. Thanks again for the report.

Cindybell....were you part of the Pampered Chef invasion at POR? I've stayed there many times and have never seen it with that many people...ever!!!

No, but we met a lot of people who were. I was told by a CM that the week before we arrived they were at 100% copacity and the week we were there they were only at 95% (which is still a lot). I agree with you though it seemed like a lot of people.

You said POR was quieter, did you have much of a shock other than that when you moved from RPR to POR?

There is a big difference between PRH and POR but I know that PRH is considered a deluxe and the POR a moderate. I have to say though I liked them both almost equally well for different reasons. At POR I really liked having rooms in what almost look like cottages. It was just so peaceful walking back to your room at night with the street lanterns shining and the porch lights on. The down side to this if it is raining. It rains almost every day in Florida in the summer time so this may be important to you when choosing to stay in a Hotel where everything is located in the same buiding or to have to walk to everything like at POR. One day we were actually holed up in our room for a couple of hours because there was a terrential downpour. Both my children actually liked POR better than RPH. I think they just liked the feeling of the open space and room to rip and tear. My youngest DS who is 12 just loved the surrey bike ride. I will always have that wonderful memory of him pedaling as hard as he could speeding down the hills with such exuberence and ringing the bell to warn people that we were coming. It is wonderful to see your children actually act like children and enjoy it.

I did love POR I just didn't say that in my first post because I really just posted my review as something more informational as opposed to what my opinion was about it.

Thanks again Cindybell, you described POR exactly how I am anticipating it - not deluxe, but very charming. While my children (DD11, DS11, & DS9) love RPR, I think they will really enjoy this resort with the bikes, carriage ride, and fishing. I appreciate you taking the time to post so much detail. :flower:

With the TV selection, we have never found it to be a problem. We usually only have on the weather channel or Disney information channel (over and over) so, we have never noticed. :wave2:

cindybell,
thank you so much for your review. my family of four will be taking our first disney trip in oct and can't wait. Just one question how long was the bus ride from por to mk?

Cindybell,

Thank you for your review. I was surprised by your comment about getting bitten by bugs, that hasn't happened to me on any of my WDW visits. Was it flies, mosquitos, or maybe the no-see-em ? Were you bit only at the pool, or near/in your room also?

We just stayed at POR last December and loved it. We had no problems with the bus system, or anything else for that matter. As far as I'm concerned, POR is a deluxe without Queen size beds. Its charming, quiet, friendly, charming, beautiful, homey...I love it there...we're going back in October and I can't wait..

It was mosquitos and I was not the only one being bitten. A woman sitting near by had the same problem. We were both being ate up so bad we had to leave the pool area. The only other place I was bitten was walking down the path to the food court and it was only once.
