Just came back from a quick trip to show non-Disney spouse the models at BCV and the facilities at YC and SAB. Long story but couldn't convince spouse to buy seven years ago (would have loved those prices) because we would never go that often (this was before kids). Well 7 years later we have been AT LEAST once a year - we would have long paid off that original purchase.

So not total resistance this time - but what caught spouse's attention was the ability to swap out for another timeshare week in Europe, etc. I never focused any sales effort in that direction - because I am buying to go to Disney. But it looks like to have my time at Disney - we will have to go occasionally other places. Don't get me wrong - we do travel extensively around the world - so it's not like other trips aren't taken.

This is a long winded post and I apologize, but I would like to hear from others who have traded for time elsewhere (overseas) and what their experiences have been like (I saw Cinderella's post). I know that it is not cost efficient - but from my perspective - its either time somewhere else in addition to BCV or no BCV:(

Good and bad experiences welcome!!

Remember, you can stay at Disneyland Paris on points. :D

And that even includes passes into the park.

That could be a WIN-WIN for both of you. Both Europe, AND Disney.

Have fun....

I would not buy DVC with a significant expectation of trading to other places except for other DVC locations. DVC is too expensive and the trade options too limited to make this an a appropriate purchase reason. I would also not buy counting on the other Disney trade options either, they too are expensive and not guaranteed to continue. You may want to consider buying less points and only using those points at DVC then paying cash for the other options.

Your spouse may be thinking that DVC is only themepark oriented- there's so much more to do in central Florida. As our kids get older, we intend to do them more. Golf, tennis, fishing, boating, Braves baseball in spring training, NASCAR, 90 minutes from Tampa or KSC...lotsa stuff to explore!

Just a reminder-
There is no guarantee that the major exchange companies (RCI< II or etc) for timeshares, will continue to exist in the future.
Some of the DVC exchanges thru the Concierge Collection are nice.
But, as Dean said, don't buy DVC for the exchange option. There are a few timeshare purchases that are geared for exchanges because of the price/exchange value. Other than a few options, it is best not to buy any timeshare unless you intend to use it for your vacations.

ralphd:D :D

I think I get what rtp-resident is saying... She's saying she thinks they will use all or most of their DVC points on property, BUT her husband likes the idea of trading out once in a while...

I think you've got the right approach here rtp-resident... Many people have traded out & some people have got really great deals, and some people trade out and just break even... But trading out or using the Concierge Collection every once in a while is a great benefit of DVC... Most cases you break even, so it's just a prepaid vacation, but sometimes you REALLY get a great deal... As Dean has told me there are also other trading companies (besides RCI/II) that you can go through to make trades as well...

I think if this option brings your husband comfort, then by all means go with it!

Thanks for your comments. Chris is right...I hope to use most of the points at BCV with perhaps a small add on at HH. But in order to pull this deal off...there must be a willingness to use the points on occasion for Concierge or Getaway so as not to be locked into BCV always.

Dean, you are the timeshare expert - so tell me if this logic is wrong. Even with European timeshares, I assume there must be some members who want to go to Disneyworld. Are DVC's not valuable in that respect - say as opposed to a week in the Poconos (no offense to PA, but isn't it a matter of desirability?) I was always under the impression that the "value" of your timeshare was someone else's willingness to trade for your location. Certainly Disney is not a destination that all aspire to, but it would seem to be enough in demand to get a decent trade in return.

Am I missing something?

The logic is correct to a certain degree. Orlando is a very easy trade other than DVC. The trouble is that all the resorts and times that everyone wants are in the same boat. Contrary to popular belief, DVC is not the only timeshare at the top of the heap. There are others even higher from a trade value standpoint. II doesn't work by matching you up with a person that owns at a certain resort in Europe. It's more like a bank or even more like a Barter service. The person from Europe may to to Thailand and there may be 1000 or more domino trades before it gets to you for Europe.

DVC works great for direct trades also which might be the best option for many hard to get trades otherwise. Just remember that at least one person has to give up what you want for you to even have a chance.
