Just Announced - Disney To Change MS

Go on that People mover thingy (sorry I can't remember the name of it for the life of me) at MK... sit back and close your eyes... You will probablly get a more realistic feeling of going into space than watching a video... Weird, If M:S bothers you that much, don't waste your time sitting through a movie. M:S is a simulator based on feeling, something this "new" addition will be lacking to the highest degree.
That's why you go on M:S. You want the feeling. Cool! That's why I go on the Gravitron at the fair; I understand. I, however, go on M:S because I've been fascinated by space travel for as long as I can remember. I was the catalyst behind my Girl Scout troop going to Space Camp for a weekend when I was a little girl. The lack of centrifuge on M:S will do nothing to detract from the experience of the ride for me, since for me, the ride is about the fantasy of being able to do something I'll never be able to experience in reality.

If you look at the other replies to this topic, you'll see parents excited about their children now being able to have this experience, as well as the excitement of those who get motion sickness or have health problems. Yes. I want to be closed into a capsule and shaken, but not stirred, while watching a movie. It's WDW. Isn't the point of the entire park to be happy? This makes me happy. It makes other people happy. I think that's pretty much the only thing that needs to be understood. :goodvibes

They haven't changed the ride, after all, and the version that made me queasy will still exist beside the version I'll be riding from here on out.

I didn't mean to come off as arrogant sounding as I did in that last post :confused3 . I guess I am just missing how just watching the video will offer anything like a fantasy trip into space... the video and the ride go hand in hand. Much like married with children, you can't have one without the other... I can't imagine it without any feeling whatsoever. I imagine it would be similar to watching Apollo 13 from my couch. Does anybody know if the seats will at least be situated like a shuttle so that you are lying our back... That would at least offer some sort of "leaving earth" feeling and give some authenticity to it.

Disclaimer: I get vertigo during some IMAX movies.

I believe how they're going to do it is that they're just not going to spin the capsule. So you'll still be in the seat, still staring into the little screen, still pushing the buttons, and still shaking/rumbling for the "engines", etc. It's not like walking into the living room, flopping down on the couch, and throwing in a video. It's still going to be a ride, just without the g-forces.

I'd imagine that it'll feel kind of like those rides that look like minivans on hydraulics with the screen in the front. I rode one of those at Space Camp (it was a mission to Mars, too!), and it felt pretty exhilirating even though we were really sitting in one spot and being gently lifted and shaken by the hydraulic lifts with no forward or backward motion.

Well then yeah if they are going to through in the simulator type effects (body wars sniff RIP or star tours) then I can see where it will feel similar. Both those do a good job at tricking the brain into thinking you are moving. So it sounds like it will be sorta like the build your own coaster at DQ... Thats Kewl

From my previous experiences on M:S just watching the movie wouldn't be enough for me to stand in what looks to be a rather long line.

I am so excited that the new version is being offered. Last May after following all the tips about how to avoid getting sick on this ride, i.e., "stare straight ahead at the screen, don't eat breakfast, etc.", I got sick. All I could do was to count slowly and pray I wouldn't throw up. I tried to stay focused on the "mission" and was sure to push my button when it was time to. At the last second as I was reaching for the bag...it was OVER! I was unable to ride TT after that due to nausea. The worst thing was not remembering what was on the screen! Now I can go back and see what I missed!!!

I think my son is gonna go crazy over it and though I'd rather ride the spinning one, I'm going to be right in the stationary one with him. I think those that are riding the stationary version can decide for themselves whether they like it or not.

I think Disney is trying to save this ride here. And they may just have done it. Time will tell.
I realize it was great to walk on the ride in 10 minutes or fewer.
I realize that by the change, one might not be able to walk on the ride in even 30 minutes and I sincerely hope it does mean that. Because if it doesn't, chop chop chop.
But you will be able to go on it, in the version it is now. And isn't that preferable to it getting the chop?

Well, if they DO move at ALL, there will be folks who complain of motion sickness... that is a given.

Soarin' is a great example.

There could not be a much simpler ride experience.
(A car going around a corner at 5 mph has more "intensity").

But there are countless posts from people terrified at the idea of the Saorin' experience.

This trills me to no end. I am very happy to hear this. I always wanted to ride it but with my medical condition there is no way I would. I can't wait to hear how it is after some have tried the new way. I don't leave till November so we should see some feed back. Way to go DISNEY glad you listened to us DIS people.

Excellent point. My DH did not go on the ride before due to his health conditions. When I told him they were opening up a section that would not have the G-force and spinning he was happy to hear it. He will now have the chance to enjoy this experience without having a possible health related problem.

I really don't understand why some people seem so upset about the new change. It will not affect their ability to ride the orginal ride. It will not stop MS from being popular. It has opened up the ride to others that could not ride before or were scared of all the experience they had read or heard about. Knowing how Disney handles crowds I imagine they will have a seperate line for people who want to ride this version. I really hope I don't get flamed for expressing my thoughts.

Angel, I couldn't agree with you more. I could not go on MS before and sat outside waiting for my DH who could handle the intensity. I was quite excited to hear about the milder version and DH was happy too that we could both go on (of course he'll still do normal version alone!). And knowing Disney I'm sure that it won't just be sitting there watching a movie. They'll make it magical somehow. :wizard:

No, it won't stop the ride from being popular, but it could well lead to the ride being MORE popular. I like being able to ride with almost no wait. Now, granted, there may be a separate line for the "non-motion" option, however, the line for the "motion" option will get longer, by virtue of their being less available capacity for this version.

No stationary version for me, I want the real ride.

:confused3 I'm married with no kids and I know plenty of people with kids who aren't married :confused3

So you've just proved my point... you CAN have the ride without the spinning. I really don't understand why people are getting so upset about this - if you like the spinning then ride the original version. It's Disney - we go there because it makes us happy and if some of us want to ride without the spin that's up to us and we shouldn't have to suffer such lectures.

I don't know for sure, but I think it was seldom running at full capacity.
Our last trip was during Spring break this year - busy time - DH rode Mission Space twice with a 10 minute wait. Other times we went by, he could have ridden it with a short wait too (basically walk on a lot of the time).

It was an expensive ride and for it to sit with such a short wait would make WDW wonder whether it needs to be changed - even if there had not been any incidents associated with it. It seems to me that this change might mean saving the ride for people who do want to experience it with the full motion. Those of who can't/don't want to might be the factor that saves the attraction. And, it may not increase the wait for the full motion ride - if there is more demand, they can open more simulators, since I doubt they were running all of them for a small enough crowd that the wait was only 10 minutes.

When that poster said "married with children" that "you can't have one without the other" he/she was probably referring to the SHOW "Married with Children" whose theme song is the old standard that "LOVE and marriage go together like a horse and carriage....this, I'll tell you brother, you can't have one without the other." Looking at your happy wedding pictures, it is probably true in your case that love and marriage...you can't have one without the other.

Even with the ride not spinning, I don't think I will ever try it. It just doesn't appeal to me. DH rode it in Feb. he said it wasn't a big deal, and it wouldn't be worth going on it again (for him).

I don't know why people are getting out of shape because they are going to have a non spinning one, it's not like they won't be able to ride it the normal spinning way if they want too.
