Just Announced - Disney To Change MS

I'm honestly surprised people are actually interested in a non-spinning one. Without the centerfuge, it's like watching a movie on a screen 12 inches from your face. There's just no real "experience" there. I just don't get it.

There are lots of people with health issues who just can't ride it. My boys have CF and couldn't ride it. Now they can. It might not be the same ride, but they will feel like they got to ride it anyway. :cheer2:

I'm betting that the non-moving MS will be popular because people who aren't sure will try the non-moving first.

I wonder how they will work the fastpasses??

But... you're actually looking forward to just sitting in the chair and watching the film? What's so special about sitting in a chair and watching the movie on the tiny little screen?

For small children this may be intense enough. I am glad they did this for my kids, otherwise they would miss out on this ride.

Yes....because I'm at Disney and I will get to experience it while my family that "likes" the ride enjoys it as well....Probably nothing special about watching a movie on a tiny little screen..but I'm at disney with my family and that is special enough:) Why knock it? If there are some that can't handle the ride (like me) then this is a great solution...it will still leave the regular attraction for the ones that really like it.

Oh I'm not knocking it, I just don't understand it. I mean, yeah, you're at Disney, but just because something is at Disney doesn't automaticly make it fun. Sitting in a chair watching a film on a tiny little screen is still just sitting ni a chair watching a film on a tiny little screen - there's just nothing particularly special about it. And yeah, you'll be at Disney with your family, but if they go one way and you go the other, then you aren't really with them for the attraction either - you won't even be in the same line.

I would think that if someone can't handle the attraction then they just wouldn't ride it. The cetrifuge is the only thing that makes M:S halfway special. Personally I'm not crazy about It's a Small World because I don't like the song or the design. But if they turned off the music and covered up the anamatronics, would there be any reason at all to go on it even for someone who didn't like it for the now removed reasons? Not really, then it just becomes a very very tame boat ride.

Like I said... not knocking it, I just don't get it.

Yeah, but there are lots of rides that people won't ride because of health conditions. If they take the "ride" out of the ride then what is the motivation?

The centrifuge is what creates the G forces and the momentary weightless feeling during the blastoff. If the capsule itself still does moves and shakes and the sound effects are intact, I don't think the ride will be as boring as you think.

Has anyone heard what sort of restrictions, if any, the new version of the ride will have? Will there still be the same height requirement? Will it be safe for expectant mothers?

This seems even less exciting than watching the Soarin' movie without the ride would be.

Well...we are a family of four that was *not going to ride...until we heard about the tamer version. Now...we will be in line in June! My littlest Dd 9 is a total space nut, but has a mass in her brain...there is no way I'd let her ride the way it is. Myself and dh just didn't want to risk getting sick for a long time after getting off the ride...so we were not going. Dd 15 wanted to, but was leery. Now with this option, we will all ride together and if Dd 15 wants to try the "real deal"....she is perfectly welcome.

I also think this limits Disney's liability if anyone else dies or gets seriously ill on the "real" MS. They can easily say then "There are signs everywhere, the person could have easily opted for the safer version". It puts the responsibilty on the guest...not Disney to keep themselves safe.

I like this. Now, I may be able to go on it.

I wonder what will happen. You just sit there and look at the screen, partake in the mission, but don't move at all?

I'll give it a shot.

Thank you! :thumbsup2
Fig Newton, I think what may be boring to you, might not be to others...And yes just because i'm in Disney with my family will make it fun...after a long year of work and school and then getting to spend some time together in Disney will be fun whether I'm watching a tiny screen or not....and if I did go on its a small world and the music was out...that's ok too...lol. Look at "sounds dangerous" people still go in there constantly...do they experience a ride? No, do they watch something? Yes, for a little bit, then then they are stuck with headphones on their ears to experience the sound of what is going on around them...(this is my its too hot we need some air conditioning and a quick snooze attraction, lol). To me, this is boring...but not to others. So, I guess what I'm saying is even though they are taking the "ride" out of the "ride", we can still experience it and have something to talk about after we're done, whether we are going in separate lines or not, it will still be a fun time in Disney!

My thoughts exactly -- to me, it seems like it would be similar to sitting in a stationary teacup

I hope someone gets to experience the "tamer" ride and shares a review...preferrably before I leave on May 31st! :rotfl: I'd like to know if the chair still has movement or not.

I have not riden M:S but am interested in the "new" version. Would you think the motion would be like Star Tours? or like the old Mission to Mars?

Um, I'm not saying they have to experience a "ride" to get anything out of it. I'm saying that removal of what makes the attraction special and unique would not make me more inclined to ride something, even one that I wasn't already inclined to ride previously due to whatever it was they were removing.

Some have said that the capsules still move and vibrate. Well that's ok, but it's certainly not as much as something like, say Star Tours. Make no mistake, the real immersion in this attraction was from the fluctuations of g-forces. That's what sets it apart, that's what makes it special.

I still don't see what kind of shared experience you're really going to have with the family, but hey, whatever floats your boat. *shrug*

I think this is a great idea and will be riding the tame version in June.

Disney themeing makes a ride more than just about the 3 minutes or whatever you spend riding - there's the whole queue area and the concept of the ride - and I've always wondered what I was missing out on - but couldn't cope with the spinning!

I wonder is the stationary version will be like the ride in MGM star tours I think it is stationary just bounces. My kids will like I still want the original

We are going in sep and son is first grade and 7 yrs. 52 inches adn 75 pounds. Would you as a parent take him on MS? I am scared I know a four year old dies on it.

Great now it will make the lines even longer for those that enjoy riding it. :) Just kidding as it will give some people a chance to ride it. However, I can not image how it could be fun. You will just be sitting in a stationairy chair with a low quality tv monitor in your face.

Heres (one of) my questions...they post tons of warnings, right? So for the most part, most people who are conscious of their health issues dont ride it. This isn't going to prevent someone who has an underlying condition, which has already happened, from riding, and either getting sick or dying. More people may try the newer version, but it won't eliminate the risk thats always been there.
