Just a warning...Waiter from World Showcase added money to his tip!

My family and I just got back from a fabulous 7 day trip to WDW! We stayed at the Polynesian and couldn't have been more pleased with the resort. We made so many memories that I will forever be grateful to Disney, Tikiman and all of the posters here for the invaluable advice/tips I have put into practice over the last few years. However...

Last Monday, we showed up for our first ADR at a country in the World Showcase. We were on the DP, so we ordered our meal, without worry of the prices, and greatly enjoyed it. Our waiter brought our ticket and I wrote down $25 for his tip. This was our first ADR of the trip and it had been a year since our last trip, so I thought it was strange when our waiter didn't bring me a final receipt with the tip on it, but when he rushed us out the door, I figured I was not remembering correctly. Still, it bothered me (as did his odd behavior).

Fast forward to the next night's ADR (at Ohana) when the waiter brought a final receipt for me to sign after I wrote down his tip amount. After finishing my bread pudding, I immediately went to the front desk and asked for a printout of my charges. There it was...a $35 charge, instead of the $25 amount I wrote down, from the previous night's restaurant! I was surprised that it happened, and a little miffed at myself for not asking more questions the night before.

I asked the front desk CM to take off the tip, which she did, and I went back to the restaurant a couple days later and spoke to the manager and told him the waiter's name and what happened. I told the manager that I believed the waiter did it on purpose because he never brought me the receipt for me to sign showing the tip amount charged to my card (like EVERY other waiter did the entire trip).

I am not someone who makes mountains out of molehills. I pride myself in being fairly laid back and I don't let little things work me up, but I think this is worth getting worked up over. I hope he doesn't get the chance to do this to another family...I doubt we were the first.

Any chance he accidentally typed in a "3" instead of a "2" (they're right next to each other)? I wouldn't immediately assume the person was trying to rob you.

Sorry to hear that happened to you. I have learned this lesson the hard way at Disney so I always pay cash now for tips I make sure my receipt has the word cash written in and I never leave until I have my copy in my hand. It's sad to think you are enjoying a wonderful time but forget Disney can have dishonest employees the same as anyone else

This makes me sad. I'm sorry you had to deal with this.
How did the manager of the restaurant respond? Were you pleased by his reaction?

I would have also wondered if it was a case of him hitting the wrong key..... until he also happened to forget to have them sign the slip for the tip.

Glad you caught it OP!

Of course I would have assumed that if the following elements weren't also present:

He never brought me the receipt to sign showing the tip amount charged to my card. Even when I asked him, "Is that it?".

His behavior after he took our bill was odd. He rushed us out. Even my 15 year old noticed.

I always try to assume the best in others, but there was no doubt what took place here.

Thanks for the tip. We've never done table service meals before, so I'll have to pay close attention. I think I'll try to pay in cash when we can.

I would love to hear what the Managers reaction was as well??............AKK

The manager listened intently to what I had to say. He asked me a few questions and said he would investigate. He did apologize and said that "things are slow right now" and he hoped that this was not a way for waiters to make up the difference. I thought this remark was kind of odd since this is such a busy time. I guess his restaurant is slower than others. He asked to correct the tip and I told him it was taken care of. Then, I told him that I wasn't looking for any extra compensation, just thought he should be aware of the incident.

The CM at the Poly lobby was more outraged than the manager. She was very apologetic and promised to make a report.

Thanks for getting back to me.....The way you got to the Managers is the only way to handle something like this. I am glad the tips were corrected fast and hopefully the waiters are at least going to be watched to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I'll be watching our checks this November!

Lots of assumptions...you can't prove he did it or that your 2 didn't look like a 3.

I'm glad your telling everyone to check their recipes, but don't claim he did it without any kind of substantial proof.

I think you need to change the tread title. You don't know that anyone purposely altered anything here. There is no proof that it wasn't simply a mistake.

Always a good idea to check receipts....the waiters/waitresses are human and make mistakes. Unfortunately, there are a few that try and pull stunts from time to time. I am taking the original poster to her word; she said that this "bothered her." Go with your gut feeling I say. Thanks for the heads up.

Trust your instincts, OP. If you felt something was off, it probably was.

My only intent here is to help others avoid this happening to them on their vacation.

I know none of you were with me to experience this the way my family and I did, so you can easily question certain things. None of you saw that I wrote $25 TWICE for the tip (once for tip and then again below it for total) and my twos look nothing like my threes.

Sure, he could have accidentally entered a 3 instead of a 2. Oh, and he could have forgotten to bring me my final receipt to sign even after I asked him if that was it. And, he could have suddenly wanted us out of there because he had to go to the bathroom....but, those are too many coincidences for me.
