July No Buy

The poof fairy was so appalled at my spending that she ate the post I tried to do last night...

Budgeting saves lives. I now have proof...

I was very virtuously tracking my spending online with my banking software, and I saw a post for rite-aid that was for some bungee cords I bought to defeat the evil possum (I call him "Grendel") who murdered three of my chickens (but only ate one, talk about wasteful!!!) Well, Grendel has learned to open the side door of our little coop, but the bungees have kept him out the last few nights since his most recent murder.

Well, tracking that made me realize I hadn't locked up the coop tonight because I'd left the roof cracked all day with a fan blowing in (hey, it was really hot today, and they're walking around wearing down jackets!) I got to them in time and they are all tucked in and bungeed-up safe as houses... no chicken dinner for Grendel tonight!!!

Now, so help me, if I ever catch that little bugger, I'll be pinging the budget board asking for recipes for possum stew!

---
So as for my "appalling spending" confessional. Last week I travelled for work... that was necessary and reimbursable--the facial at the airport spa during a long layover? Notsomuch...

New chickens? "Necessary," because I'm picky about my egg-sources and organics are expensive. Materials to build a bigger coop play-yard since I am overprotective now? Necessary. Bungee cords to secure current coop until Fort Clucks is complete? Necessary... Big giant inflatable ball that the kids can climb inside and roll around the house that I bought at rite aid when I went for the bungees? Yeah... not so necessary... but keeps them busy...

Lots of sodas here and snacks there... but also lots of meals at home, so there is some improvement there... and at least I'm using those coupons McD's sent out, so I'm wasting a LITTLE less money than usual... sort of... :lmao:

Hooray for budgeting! Hopefully the new coop will be much better. Those little buggers are so crafty. I hope you catch it!

It's been pretty hot in the city these few days.

I really need to lock myself in on the weekends because I seriously spend too much on them.

I'm back in this month. It will be nice to be back after taking a few months off. I lost my job at the end of March, went on vaca to WDW in April, shoulder surgery in May, and DD's Graduation party in June. Now that things have slowed down I can get back to my "No Buys". Although in my head I have been trying to following my rules of no buy. Just haven't been documenting it. Documentation is very important for me to be held accountable. I don't track my exact amount. I always round up. That's why you will never see change in my totals. So here we go!

For July I'm tracking non-necessities.

Was off today and the weather was wonderful. Entertained myself wandering through high end decorating/accessories shoppes. (Anything that spells it "s-h-o-p-p-e" is likely to be high end.). $5 for a small bag of delicious caramel corn, $4 for some books and craft supplies at the thrift shop. Fun money well spent.

I didn't bring a lunch today, so bought a bagel sandwich and Twix bar. Also got a green tea frap yesterday. I got a Shellac nail job done yesterday, but I won't including that in the budget because it's my little treat. It was a great deal though! Manicure with gel nails and design for just $36!

But onto the budget tracking...I missed posting a few days before we left, so here goes.

For July I'm tracking non-necessities.

I've done really well lately.

7/1-$1 (box of ugly Christmas cards at Goodwill for envelopes for cards I handcrafted)
7/2-0
7/3-$2 (We've been out of power since Sunday. The temp inside our house was 93--with no fans, no water to flush, no phone service. If I didn't get some chocolate, somebody was going to get hurt)

7/5 $1, vending machine with Snickers bars got me.

7/7 - $16 shirt for me. I skipped fast food and ate leftovers for lunch and made supper even though DH was gone for the day, so the day wasn't a blow out.

Holy Cow, congratulations on the engagement! Now, from now until two months after the wedding, spend like wild and deny yourself nothing. Also do not cook, clean, take out the trash, or do any maintenance on anything. People are always so "good" when they are engaged, which sets up unrealistic expectations for the long haul. :lmao:

Hmmm... my only goals for June were to track as much as possible just to see what the numbers really are... and I did ok at that. It got complicated when every time I did a price adjustment at the Target toy sale, they kept giving me the difference back as cash (my bank's free accounting app is useful, and, well, FREE... but not sophisticated.) So I assume my cash leeched away into the categories of "entertainment, fast food, and my kids"
Becuase that's where my money always goes...:sad2:

I stayed within my (exhorbitant) gas budget, barely... Monday night I put in the last of the budget, and sure enough, the gas light lit up this morning-- which is ok, because it means I budgeted right... and lousy, because it means I really do spend as much on gas as I guesstimated I do...

I busted the grocery budget a little, but I'm not entirely sure how much because I did end up using my credit card for a couple days at the end of the month when the deposits I was expecting took a ridiculous amount of time to post. I'm sticking with the same number for August, though, since I did a lot of stocking up this month (spaghetti sauce for $.50/can, and ground beef at about $1.10/lb wouldn't you!?!) , if I hadn't maybe I'd have stayed in-budget, but since I did, I'm not going to need as much for this month.

But when my deposits finally DID clear, I paid off one of my credit cards! :cheer2: (Unfortunately, it was not hard work and discipline, it was a small inheritance-- but hey, I went with the responsible choice instead of a trip to China...) Now that monthly payment can go toward the last card, which should be paid off in November, next year the target is the car, and that will be that! DH has a card he is paying off as well, and expects to be done in October-- which should give us a CC-free new year!:cool1:

School supplies are mainly bought, though there's sure to be more-- DH can pay for those :lmao: budget is written, bills paid, "discretionary" money identified... now comes the hard part... sitting on my hands and not spending willy-nilly...

I like Yuki's idea of $40/3 days... I wonder if I could make that work...

I'm closing out the month with a big bang. I got engaged over the weekend at the beach!!!!

Congratulations!!! But talk about a budget buster :rotfl: So, give us the details: any ideas initially on the whens and wheres of the wedding??

Thanks girls! I'll tell you more in the next month. Zhoen, I'm glad I gave you some ideas! I really the $40/3day budget. It keeps my spending down, but if I blow my "budget", I start fresh in a few days! Also a great way for me to save money.
