July 5, 2011 - Mickey's WONDERful Alaskan Adventure

Thanks for the welcome, WDWLVR! I was glad to see that we are in the same age group! And those DVDs look great, nascar8820; I'll definitely keep an eye out for them.

Actually, I think we're fairly talkative! I was on the Wonder in August and the thread was very, very quiet! Hardly any posts at all. So it's nice to see all the posts on this thread and that people are so good at sharing information already!

Also be sure to watch/DVR Extreme Alaskan Adventures on the Travel Channel. The next showing is 10/21/2009 at 11 AM.

oh wow..will have to remember to tape this. with me being a midnite shift worker i dont think i can stay awake long enough in the morning to watch it. thanx for the great info on the dvd's too..i'll have to see what our local library has.

My husband found a couple of the Alaska DVD's on Netflix and added them to our list. I really am interested in the Inside Passage one.

Good morning everyone. DH has been very busy the last few days looking at what others offer for excursions. He found a PDF this morning. I copied out the excursions, length of excursion and the price. This will give everyone an idea of what we can possibly expect for our cruise to Alaska. If you want me to send you the PDF, PM me with your e-mail address and I will send it to you.

Hi Lisa,
Wow, thanks so much for typing all that information into the post! I'll definitely pm you for the pdf. It all looks so interesting!

Thanks Lisa - great information. I've sent a pm!

Wow that is awesome. Thanx Lisa.

Anybody watch or tape the show on the travel channel?? i forgot what day it was and went to tape it like the day after it already aired :confused3:lmao:

Lisa - got the PDF. Awesome! Thanks so much to you and your DH.

Tracy - forgot about the Travel Channel show. I'm sure they'll replay it - at least I hope so!

I just checked the Travel Channel and Extreme Alaskan Adventures is not on their schedule during the next 2 weeks. I did find a couple more show though.

November 1 on The Travel Channel
2:00 PM Naked Alaska – Naked Alaska explores the rugged beauty and fascinating wildlife of the 49th state. This land of extremes hosts the highest mountain peaks, the most volcanoes, 100,000 glaciers and 3000 rivers.

6:00 PM Alaskan Wild – Alaska is one of the few true wildernesses left on earth. Aerial photography highlights the snowcapped mountains, wide open spaces and glaciers that punctuate the vast and unforgiving landscape.

7:00 PM Alaska’s Arctic Wildlife – As spring loosens the icepacks on the northwest coast of Alaska, animal life awakens. Birds, whales and walrus begin to migrate, while polar bear cubs emerge from their dens to frolic in the snow.

I had to dress up for our local parade yesterday. I took the Mickey sorcerer hat that we bought over 10 years ago at disney and threw it togther with a piece of red fabric draped over me and tied it all around the waist with yellow boat rope to make myself into a Micky Sorcerer. :worship: This was like a last minute throw it all togther in an hours timeframe. and my dd decided i had to wear it all day long.

anyone else dress up for halloween?

Thanks for the update. I'll have to set the DVR. I love when they do theme nights like this. Really gets you in the mood.

What is the best time to go on an Alaskan Cruise?
What are good side trips/land excursions for various ports?
What is the temperature on an Alaska cruise? Is it quite cold, given the glaciers and icebergs?
What will I need to wear on an Alaska cruise? Will I need to pack my winter clothes and a cold weather jacket?
What is the best pre or post cruise tour out of Vancouver?
Where is the best place to view bald eagles in Alaska?
Where is the best place to view bears on other wildlife in Alaska?
I don’t have much extra in my budget for shore excursions (and some run over $300 per person!) What are some fun yet inexpensive things to do while in port?
Is it true that not all cruise ships stop in Glacier Bay National Park? I heard that this was one of the most beautiful spots in Alaska and want to see it.
My favorite cruise line does not stop in glacier Bay. What is a good alternative destination?
What about icebergs? Aren’t they dangerous? Will we see any?

Can never get to much info.....so

1. Spend time reading the Alaska board at Cruise Critic - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=55

2. Read books. My top two recommendations are:

- Frommer's Alaska by Charles Wohlforth: http://www.amazon.com/Frommers-Alask...4226021&sr=8-1 This is the 2010 edition coming out in December. I prefer this to the Frommer's or Fodor's "ports of call" books.

- Alaska By Cruise Ship by Anne Vipond: http://www.amazon.com/Alaska-Cruise-...4226208&sr=1-1

SIDE NOTES AND TIPS:

1). When checking out hotels be sure to ask them to give you the US rate because when they give you a price it will be in Canadian prices. Also be sure to ask how much in taxes...in other words be sure to ask for the full price in American $$$$$

2) If you have a Disney rewards Visa use it for everything so you can get the reward $$$$. You can use the earned reward dollars for your ship excursions, merchandise, and at guest services to pay anything Disney on the ship. We use ours for everything that we would use the cash that we have for than I go online in a couple days and transfer the funds from my checking account to the card. No CC balance. But lots of reward $$$$. You will be surprised how fast it all adds up.

Did you pack yet? LOL

I packed our snorkel gear and the kids' goggles. I had the suit case lying on my bedroom floor, and my lovely kitty peed on it!! This is my life on a daily basis . . . (cat is sick so can't get too upset with her - sigh)!!
