July 30, 2010 Mickey's Adventures England to Espana Cruise

Being from the UK Normandy is not at all far and as my girls are, in my opnion, too young to appreciate the history and relevance of the war beaches we are treating Cherbourg as an extra sea day. We may walk off for a stroll if we fancy it but no major excursions planned.

Just booked private guide & van for Lisbon!

Do you mind sharing what some of the highlights of the tour are?

Sounds like it would be easy to take the tram into the Alfama and then get on the Famous tram 28, so may do that, and then look for some Portuguese pastries.

Well, we just had to cancel our December sailing on the Magic, so I'm really glad we'll be on this one! DD got her acceptance letter from her first choice university today; that's basically good except that their finals are during our previously scheduled cruise. Guess I could go alone... (Yeah, like that would go over!)

I have found the DCL port excursions for cherbourg & vigo to be less than exciting, so I am looking forward to Lisbon, I am still undecided about Seville (long ride) & I am taking the DCL Fortress Gibralter tour!

As for Lisbon,

I will head over to Bellem first, to see the monestary & the coach museam. I have hired one of Rick Steves guides & a minivan for my family, at this point I dont have an itinerary locked down but I am sure it will be a blast. I too would like to have some pastries!:cool1::banana::woohoo::dance3:

We just spoke with a friend who was RAVING about the Normandy beaches and Pont du Hoc. SO....I'm still working on a way to do it. I did find a van service/tour guide advertising for 550 Euros for a van of 8, so might be seeing if anyone else is interested. I'll have to verify that the price will include pick up at the dock.

My oldest 2 DD are both fluent in French so I am thinking of just heading into town or doing the DCL tour? That being sai I am currently booked for Bayeux the Miraculous, as I wanted to see the 1000 year old tapestry of the norman conquest of Britain:confused:

Actually most of the port excursions sound less than exciting, but I think most will be easy to DIY.

Sounds like you found a fun private tour.

To be honest I am almost glad that the DCL excursions are uninspiring. We had planned all along to do it mostly or entirely DIY and I was worried I would see one or two which I really wanted to do... nope, still DIYing it!

V. sad to hear there are no Mickey Bars aboard, can't believe that they are planning to go a whole season without them... :scared1:

I emailed DCL and the Magic should be docking at Santa Apolonia in Lisbon.

According to what I found on Trip advisor it should be easy to get to the main centre of Lisbon.

THis is a cut and paste I think the fares are old.

If your ship does dock at Santa Apolonia, then you walk over to the big train station by the military museum, and go downstairs to the metro (blue line). Buy a ticket from the machine (E1.25 = E0.50 + E0.75) and ride over a couple of stops to Baixa-Chiado and get off. You have a choice to climb up to Chiado or climb down to Baixa (using either stairs or escalator). Return by putting the ticket in the machine and adding E0.75 for the return trip. If you think you will ride a lot of transit, then purchase the day card for E4.00 at the kiosk in the station, and ride all of the bus/metro/tram/elevador for the entire day.

MkMommy,

Thanks for posting the name of the port in Lisbon. I just bought a book on Lisbon and this information will help to plan the day. We are going DIY in this port too....I also love a good pastry..Yummy:yay:

Maybe I will ditch the van but keep the guide!

Thanks for posting the info on Lisbon MKMommy, I am starting to think about doing a bit more research once DD1s birthday is done with (this week we have a lot of different visits from friends and relatives plus a party to organise!)

Hi everyone,

Just checking in :wave2:

Can't believe how quickly the time is going, once we get June out the way we're almost there  and when I think how quickly May has gone it will pass in no time.

Have been doing a fair bit of shopping this weekend, Niamh has grown out of everything (and I mean everything!!!) it just seemed to have happened overnight. So had to buy her a load of clothes just for playing in and decided whilst we were at it to stock up for the cruise too.

Have also ordered all my fish extender gifts for the kids -still to decide what to do for the adults but at least it's another thing off my list.

Katie

Just a reminder if anyone wants to join the FE, the cutoff date is June 15.

I think right now there is 10 cabins.

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Please can you add us to the Fish Extender list - I have resisted as long as I can. When you get chance could you post the details you have so far, I know others may join but just so I can get a feel for how many boys \ girls \ ages etc....

We are Cat 12 GTY so no room number yet.

Glad to hear a good review of this hotel as we are staying there prior to our precruise stay in London. Any suggestions or tips?

If you have the time: there's a really nice swimming pool to relax after a day in the parks, and you really should try the the "Yacht Club" restaurant: great food and a wonderful winelist at affordable prices!

And it's decided now: we go to the Meyerwerft in Papenburg on july 5th. to visit the new "Disney Dream".... :cheer2:
