Julia Roberts twins -- Why must celebs give their kids unusual names?

Not sure about Hazel yet, but I like Phinneas. I'd also call him Finn. I don't think Hazel's too bad, really. If I ever have a girl, one of the names I'm seriously considering is Hannah, which is also very old fashioned. If I have a boy, I have always wanted to name him Horatio (the one guy in Hamlet who had a clue). I never would name him that, but I do love that name.

As someone who grew up with an uncommon name, I'm actually pretty fond of the unique ones. I LOVE Phinneaus, like others have said - A Separate Peace was one of my favorite books in high school, and I'd love to be able to call my son Fin/Phinny.

Remy and Holly, by the way, are two of my favorite DISkids. :cheer2:

Sure, I raise my eyebrows along with everyone else at some of the names celebrities come up with (Moon Unit and Tallulah, for example) but other ones I think are pretty neat (Scout was named after To Kill A Mockingbird).

As many times as people mispronounced or misspelled my name growing up, just as many people took the extra moment to learn it, to look at my name and look at me and actually put the name and face together. I don't think I can say the same for the "Jessicas" in my class - I'm an 80's baby, and we literally had 6 Jessicas in my entire elementary class of about 40 kids. My poor friends were always identified by their last name!!

OMG that terrible!!!!

I thought she was normal! I guess she's just as much of a freak as the rest of Hollywood!

Those poor kids!

Those poor kids have Julia Roberts as their mom I think they'll be just fine. ;) LOL

I loved "A Separate Peace."
I think Phinnaeus is an old Irish or Scottish name. It's probably in her family.

It is pronounced: FIN-e-as.

Her ds will probably be nicknamed Phinny as in Albert Finney who starred with her in "Erin Brockovich."

I think they are both nice names. You'd pronounce 'phinneaus' fin-E`-us (long E in the middle).

tricia.

I think that the names are terrible! Can you imagine holding a sweet little newborn baby and saying, "Oo, wooky, what a sweet wittle Phineas!" Um, I don't think so. She is just asking to have her kid beat up when he goes off to school.

But I guess that I am the pot calling the kettle black. I plan on naming my child Dalee.

BTW, Rumer (Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's daughter) was name after Rumer Godden, the author of the classic Christmas story "The Holly and the Ivy".

I know someone who named their boy and girl twins Kai and Luna. I can already see the mean kids calling her Loony.

I actually have a co-worker named Lunie. I think it's pretty. Of course, this Lunie looks like she should be a supermodel, so I guess it works for her having a different name.

My father has a friend named Kai. He is from the south pacific, I'm not sure where exactly. I always liked that name.

If I ever have a daughter, her name will be Djeta. (pronounced Jate-a)

So I guess I like odd names...

I think they are HORRIBLE names. I also grew up with an unusual name. I still hate it and always wished my name was Jessica or Jennifer. Its so hard to fit in for kids, an unusual name shouldn't be something they have to deal with also.

Like others, I think Hazel sounds so old sounding and reminds me of the show Hazel (which I liked to watch). It sounds like a little old lady with gray 'bubble' hairstyle. I'll try to think of hazel as in "your eyes are 'hazel' and maybe that'll help. (Help what? I don't know since what she names her babies in NOMB. LOL Phinneaus is still shocking when you first see it but I think knowing that it has roots will help with that one. (Kinda like knowing Scout came from To Kill A Mockingbird)

Well, I have to ask. Have you heard this name before?
I would have said it just like it is spelled (phonics, you know LOL): "Dee-Jet-a"

Maybe if you have a DD others will do better with her name than I did.

I don't have a problem with Hazel, but Phinneas? That's a very old name. Wonder what he well get it shortened to

I was thinking they have to be family names.

My nephews middle name is Leonard...not what most people would use for a name now, but it was my Dad's name.

I don't think they're that bad. She just likes old fashioned names I guess. There are are stars who have given their children way worse names.

Well, at the risk of offending here... I like those names a lot better than the ongoing (neverending????) trend of giving kids last names for first names. It always sounds so pretentious!

I have boy and girl twins as well and I'm sure some would say my Miranda and Malcolm have weird names! :faint:

Lisa

I like those names. But why is it that whenever someone has a difficult name to pronounce or the name has more 1 syllabul, everyone assumes the child will be beaten up or want to have his/her name shortened? I'm not trying to be rude, but who are you and I to say if a name is nice or weird or strange?

My dd is named Jennifer!!! She is the ONLY Jennifer at her primary school of around 700 kids and I dont think there is a Jennifer at my school except for one teacher. I know it used to be really popular and I glad it is not like all the ...........well.....common names out there now!! I was going to name some but I figured I would get in trouble!! Some here are so common there will be 5 or 6 in the same class room with the same name!!

theres about a million jennifers around here...its impossible to know if they are talking to me or not...In my tiny elementary school , there were about 5 jessicas and 5 jennifers...out of maybe 50 kids..it was horrible!!

They're old fashioned- but not made up. It's the made up names that I can't stand. They're her kids for cripes sake- if she'd have asked me I probably would have said "don't do it" but she didn't.
