Julia Roberts twins -- Why must celebs give their kids unusual names?

I like those names. But why is it that whenever someone has a difficult name to pronounce or the name has more 1 syllabul, everyone assumes the child will be beaten up or want to have his/her name shortened? I'm not trying to be rude, but who are you and I to say if a name is nice or weird or strange?

I like odd names. I live in an area where common names are very uncommon.
There are 25 students in my class. Of those 25, only 9 have common names.

The one that is teased about her name is named Jessica.

I will have to say that my almost 91 year old neighbor was tickled pink when she told me that some Hollywood actress named her daughter Hazel. That's my neighbor's name. She said besides herself that's the first time she's heard that first name used in decades.

Those names are a little different, but I've heard a lot worse.

I named my oldest Brittany. When I named her, no one else around had a baby named Brittany. I moved to Indy a few months later, and everywhere I went, there was a child named Brittany. I thought I chose something different.

I really, really don't like the name Hazel. It reminds me of the tv show with the maid, Hazel. Just sounds like a grandmom name. Then again, it's not my child, LOL.

Thats the first thing I thought of when I heard the name!! As someone who has spent their life with a "different" name, its awful. Its always misspelled and shortened and mispronounced. What I wouldn't have given to be called something that everyone can say, spell and isn't always trying to shorten.

I really like the name Phinnaeus Walter, but Hazel Patricia?? Eww! But I actually dislike the name Patricia more than Hazel (no offense to anyone named Patricia).

I'm wondering if they are family names, especially Hazel. It's funny how names go in cycles. When I was in high school so many girls were named Susan, Karen and Lisa (I guess I'm dating myself). We thought names like Emily and Grace were old lady names. Remember Emily Littela (sp?) on Saturday Night Live? Now those are the most popular baby girl names.

I know. It's not the kids who have the problem, it's those who are judgemental of the names that do.

My name is not spelled the way people are used to. Sure I have to spell it out to people before I say it when thety ask me what my name is. But I was named after my great grandmothers (first and middle) and I honor them by having this name. I prefer my spelling over Laura.

I love interesting names.

I think Hazel is beautiful. I'm not crazy about Phinneaus but it could be worse.

I think Hazel is a hideous name. Phineaus is different, but the name Phinn is cute. I like that it comes from "A Seperate Peace." I'm not a real fan of old-fashioned names. I think unusual names are neat, as long as they're nice-sounding. My kids have unusual names.

I guess is what is hard for me is that it is the parents that choose the name and the kid is stuck with it...they are the ones that have to live with the "judgemental people" that they will come in contact in their life times(and you know they will and the parents know they will too!!) ...why put that on a little child? I don't particularily like my name (Lisa) but I was teased horrilbly about my last name.

not sure about Phinneus. I know a Fin, maybe they will call him that.

I thought the same thing. I hope they call him Fin. Hazel isn't too bad.

We named all three of our kids from our family trees, so they all have "old" names. My grandmother's name was Hazel, but I never considered using it for one minute! I thought that Hazel was a name that would never come back in style! LOL.

The middle names are for the husband's deceased mother and her deceased father.
I like the names. I especially like Phineas. I have always hated being a Jennifer - no originality in the name whatsoever. Older names are also making a huge comeback. My girl name choices are: Amelia, Adrienne, or Lillian. I'm sure I'll get flack for that but I much prefer classic names than trendy soap opera names.

Hazel and Phinnaeus...Interesting. It's so hard to picture a little girl named Hazel! LOL I agree that Phinn would be a cute nickname. They aren't names that I would choose, but I don't think they're awful. (Apple is much worse! :p)

I talked my best friend into naming her daugther Adrienne (that was about 8 years ago). I think it's a great name!

It's a family name for us :) The only drawback is that DH thinks Adrienne is still too associated with Rocky and she'd get teased

I don't mind either name too much actually. I'm trying to remember what other "older" name I'd heard recently... I think it was Olga.

Hazel I can see for a baby. It really all depends on how you say the name. If you say it harshly, it sounds awful. Then again so does almost any name.

I can't, however, imagine a baby named "Olga".

When I was in university, one of my classmates became an aunt. Her sister named the baby "Faline", which sounded to me too much like "saline".

Hazel reminds me of an 80-year old woman, and Phinneus sounds pretentious to me, but hey, they aren't my kids to name. Congrats to Julia Roberts and her husband. I'm hoping the twins will keep her busy enough so she won't have time to act -- she is my least favorite actress, hands down, but I'm happy for the healthy delivery of her babies.
