A CT judge has said that Quinnipiac University violated Title IX in eliminating the women's volleyball team and attempting to replace it with competitive cheerleading, which the judge determined is not a collegiate sport.

Anyone else think they should appeal this?

I have to agree that it is not a sport-an activity that is physically demanding, yes, but not a "sport".

" have to agree that it is not a sport-an activity that is physically demanding"

Given that definition, Gymnastics wouldn't be a "Sport"

Why do you not think its a sport and more of an activity? Just curious if you feel that way about golf too?

Just seems to be a subjective ruling. Meaning it's going to have to be more strictly defined as it goes through the court system.

If you want to get right down to it, this is a referendum on title 9...not about whether something is a sport.

Who in there right mind would ever think cheerleading is a sport. Please its like saying ping pong is a sport. Yes the cheerleaders are talented ...very talented but someone has to draw the line somewhere.

sport (spôrt, sprt)
n.
1.
a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
b. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation.

Seems to me that Competitive Cheerleading satisfy's #1 and #2. And #3 for that matter

^This

also if you’re talking volleyball vs. cheerleading
i vote volleyball

As for title 9, i was a rower so title 9 was the best thing that ever happened to women’s crew

Ping pong is considered a sport isn't it?

Curling's a sport too.

Sounds like a bill clinton answer. Define is. Again walking can be a sport. We have to draw the line somewhere.

I would agree with that too. Again, it doesn't mean they aren't hard, I just think of a sport as something that is not subjectively judged like cheerleading and gymnastics. Running falls under the category of a sport because there is a measured "score".

Why are they eliminating the Volleyball? I think it stinks to try to get around the rules, but I do think that cheer leading can be strenuous.

Hoenstly, I've always had a problem with something so subjective considered a sport. And that includes figure skating, gymnastics, ballroom dancing (remember the push to get that into the Olympics?) and even free style skiing and snowboarding. Basically, if it has a subjective "artistic" element to it, it's not a "sport"

As PP said, it's a Title IX clarification. Unfortunately, this will probably mean the end to any cheerleading scholarships.

Well then I guess you could say the same thing about football - it's an activity that is physically demanding but what makes it a sport. Obviously then by this definition golf would not be a sport either.

I like the definition of "sport" a previous poster posted - again it's all subjective to personal opinion.

Money. Only so much to go around.

How about if the "sport" only meets the criteria of #3 in the above posted definition?

As it stands now, cheerleading seems to be a sport, but I don't know WHY. It's a form of entertainment meant for keeping a crowd enthused during a sporting event.
