Jon & Kate plus 8 budget?

I don't necessarily disagree. But the first thought that came to mind was "that's what you get for selling your daily life for public entertainment." They made the choice to make their lives public, and have profited heavily from it. The bad comes with the good, and yes, in a situation like this, people will make judgments about what they've seen on tv.

I thought about that too. I just think some of the posts were getting to be a little harsh, IMO. The ones talking about how K dosen't love her boys or that J should leave K. That's where it becomes unnecessary.

People can judge all they want I guess but what if the tables were turned and your life was on display (not you persnonally but everyone lives)? Would people be saying horrible things about you based on what they see in a 30-60minute (edited) TV show?

I agree.

And Jon & Kate are obviously ok with their situation, since they continue to put their family's life on public display.

I wonder, when the kids are older and have access to the internet ... what will they think when they google themselves? This thread is TAME in comparison to other blogs and forums about the Gosselins. There are some awful, awful things out there.

You could say horrible things about people based on what some of them post here on the DIS!!

My perpective is similar to Madge but on the other side. I can absolutely understand (and occasionally support) logical and intelligent arguments "against" J&K, but in general I like the show.

It's hard to have a real opinion since we don't know what's really going on--just TLC's version of what really goes on. But if they do the show for 3-4 years and make enough money to live without a mortgage and put away money for college for all of the kids, then I think it's a fair trade off. I don't think the kids are that affected. And if they live the rest of their childhood without financial worries and can go to college without students loans or working their way through college then again, I think that's a fair trade off.

Anyone on the Budget Board knows what financial worries can do to a family. And anyone who's worked and borrowed their way through college wouldn't wish it on anyone.

If the money is all gone by college though, I completely change my mind about them!!! :rotfl:

As from inside sources of the family Jon can't hold a job and his IT jobs would never had paid for all that they do. Kate is the money maker of the family with the show. She doesn't allow anyone extra on the show that will take money away from the family who the network wanted to pay if they were going to be part of the show alot. Anyway this is not reality just like when Little People Big World started off being just making ends meet then Bomb, remodel and trips out the ying yang. The show pays for everything and more...

And that's where the compensation comes in. They've sold that access to put their lives on display. They have to know, and accept that part of the deal.

their show is their life and their life is the show.

it is what it is. LOL

This post is so off topic. What does Kates personality have to do with her budget or the any budget related thing for that matter. The thread on the community board is bad enough why should the budget board get involved in this nonsense.

Does Kate have a budget, who knows because we do not live in HER house and she has not personally decided to put it out in public. So this question still has not been addressed.

Well, Kate has become the voice for Kmart layaway ... as a budgeting tool for the holidays. She is also an advocate for healthy eating choices and has been seen clipping coupons on an episode of JK8. Allegedly, she's concerned with stretching her $$. I haven't really seen her share any tips of how she does that, though.

well, Jon & Kate are not unskilled people. Jon had an IT job, and Kate is trained as a nurse. Jon could work during the week and Kate on weekends.

Oh, I know they have professional skills..but even if they both worked I doubt they could afford the particular "lifestyle" that they seem to want or expect to give their kids...even with two salaries! It's a family of ten! I'm just thinking of the gap/gymboree clothes, day trips, American Girl, music lessons, etc. I'm not criticizing that lifestyle-it is very similar to what I provide my own kids. But just think of signing eight kids up for soccer or baseball, buying eight sets of school supplies, eight kids in braces, the groceries, etc. :scared1:
I think we all have a certain life we want to give our kids and that is why we make the choices we do, whether it is to take a certain job, have more kids or not, etc. I just sometimes wonder what they would've done without the show contract and endorsements. :confused3

Plus, really, Kate leaving Jon in charge on the weekends while she works? Not happening!

it's about time one of you guys showed up! ;)

 My debate receptors are down lately! Haha!!

:rotfl: Sorry...my mind is in the gutter.

OK. this is where this thread IS budget related. Without the show, Jon & Kate would have to live like the rest of us on this board. They would have to decide what is a priority, save money, clip coupons, etc. There have been posters with large families on this board (the one mom with all the kids that took the trip to FL for less than $2500 comes to mind) that have gotten by within their means. Is it easy? No. But they do it.

While I am not Kate's biggest fan, I don't think that there has ever been the suggestion, in interviews or on the show, that they had a certain lifestyle in mind for their family... that that is the motivation for the show. A nice perk? Absolutely. But, Jon & Kate (and TLC) have always said that they wanted financial security and that the show provides a way for the children to have both parents at home.

I don't know why. He does most of the work. :lmao: :lmao:

I haven't watched it since the Disney episode. It makes me so mad that people that are obviously loaded getting free stuff at Disney and special treatment. I'd love for my girls to meet with the princesses in a special area and have CM's bring them ice cream! I'd love personalized Mickey ears in my room when I arrive. Too bad that us people that work hard to save up for a trip don't get perks like that! It made me bitter, lol!

This was interesting to read. I have never watched this show so I am not going to make any comments as to the family. I am the youngest of 8 children so the idea of this show has always amused me. Now I realize were weren't multiples so that does change the perspective a bit but my mom stayed at home with us while my dad worked and you know what....we got by. We lived on a very tight budget all of my growing up years (something that I can't shake now, even when we - dh and my kids - can afford some luxuries - I am very frugal). We didn't have designer clothes, we ate the store brand foods, our vacations were camping trips, etc. But we were incredibly happy.

The one thing I'd like people to reconsider is that this family deserves tons of stuff just because they have a lot of kids (I do think they should be compensated if they are doing the show, as that is only proper - I however would never put my family out there like that). Families who have a lot of children need to do so without expecting or feeling deserving of freebies. We never got freebies or assistance of any kind and were fine without them (and in fact, I think we are the better for it). It is all about choices...choosing to have a large family and choosing to make sacrifices to make it work financially.

I think what bother me the most is, as a social worker working with medically fragile and disadvantaged children, I see people who are REALLY in need and the money put into all the freebies given out on these kinds of shows could be put to such better use out there in our communities.

I know, can you imagine having to buy 8 cars, put 8 kids in college, paying for 5 weddings (girls)? I don't really think Kate's thinking that far ahead (because it's all about her right now), but I would hope so!

it's been said already but no one is owed a car, a free college education and a fancy wedding just because. If parents choose to do that, great, if not, the kids will have to work for it. No harm no foul there.

nobody I know wants another baby after their youngest goes to school :rotfl:

me!! My youngest are twins and partially in fear of another set of twins and partially out of my desire for a tiny bit of sanity and then another part of me that wants to be able to have quality time with a baby,I would love to have another child when my twins go off to kindergarten next fall.

:rotfl: Sorry...my mind is in the gutter.

LOL.... me too with the "putting out in public" comment :rotfl:

My question is do you think they would have financial security (nice house, kids college funds, savings) without the TLC deal though? If they just worked normal jobs? I don't. :confused3

:thumbsup2 My dad was one of 11 children so I know what you are talking about. :)
