The child labor provisions do not apply to children employed as actors or performers in motion pictures, theatrical, radio or television productions.

The Gosselin children fit none of the above categories. They are not actors. In regards to the GWoP site, I've read there and even tried to post there. My posts never made it though, because although I wasn't nasty or rude, I was pro-Gosselin and apparently they don't like that over there.

I've read Jodi's sister's site too (and her posts on GWoP) and while I think it's a shame if what she says is true, I don't understand why she feels the need to share personal stuff. She got the Jodi info out and defended her sister, but by sharing more info it seems like she is hurting the relationship between Jodi and Kevin and the Gosselins even more. Public figures or not, I wouldn't feel that it was my place to trash my family in a public forum.

Interesting point... I need to run now, but I am interested to find out what the federal exemption defines an "actor" under the federal exemption.
My guess is that reality TV stars do qualify as actors considering that most child labor laws prohibit child employment under the age of 14. However I wonder if that is the man reason for most of their "freebies". On paper they are not paid, but are being compensated for their TV appearances.
Reality TV seems to be a somewhat uncharted and undefined new teritory. I'm curious to see if the laws have caught up with the trend.

Unfortunately with that website unless you're there to bash or call them names they don't allow your posts. It's a sick bunch over there. Especially when one admits to watching the show and taking notes. How bad is that. Why so many are so heated with this family is beyond me.

I don't care what they get for free, how much they pay for a house or where they vacation. If you don't like them don't watch.

As for Jodi's sister, she's a twit. I'd kill my sister if ever she posted like her.

Taking notes? Okay, that gives new meaning to the phrase, "get a life.";)

I haven't been following this latest argument, but I do know that houses are much cheaper in Raleigh, NC than they are in the Northeast. This past January, I visited a house in Raleigh that was at least 5 bedrooms for about $450,000.

Could that be why J&K are thinking of moving to NC? For a larger house at a cheaper price? :confused3

They have often talked about moving south, someplace warmer with shorter winters. It is tough to be house confined for such long periods of time.

And warmer weather I do believe Kate said....WHICH I don't blame her!!

Is the weather really that much warmer in central Virginia than it is in PA though?! Even North Carolina gets snow and pretty cold winters.

The winters in NC do last long and they are not very cold. We've not seen any good amount of snow in the last few years. :( I always hope it will snow at least once so they close the schools and work, but not recently. Last year seemed exceptionally warm. DH was still wearing shorts in Jan/Feb!

The housing market here is good too. You hear of so many northerns who come here and can buy a much larger home and they like the weather better...

I know the housing market is good down there. We have family members moving down to NC at the beginning of next year! Family members already down there said they've gotten a lot of snow in the past few years but they're in northern NC, right over the border from VA. It must gets better as you go farther south (obviously )

Yeah...we're in the Raleigh/Cary area and it's not too cold here. We're lucky to get one good snow a year. It does still get cold, but it doesn't last as long. I don't think I would want to live any more North than I do now.

This is a good area because you are only a few hours from the beach and a few hours from the mountains. I'm more of a beach person myself. (I broke my leg snow skiing...)

I will say...the Summers do get pretty hot. It can be pretty humid here. We've had a cold streak this week! Only mid-80s! Now that I'm trying to be more active...riding bikes, running...I'm looking forward to some cooler temps!

Oh, us too!! Our cold front this week brought us down to the low 90s, mid-upper 80s.

:lmao: It's like that here too! I'm so sick of this humidity. I don't mind the heat but the humidity just sucks the energy out of you :headache: Everyone always gives us a hard time for going down to Orlando in the summer but it's just as hot and humid here as it is there! Now the winters, on the other hand, I wouldn't mind spending down south :goodvibes

Another thing when they were touring the properties that they kept mentioning was privacy. They are probably looking for more land to built on so they will have more privacy. Won't have people driving by and trying to talk to the kids, take pictures, etc.

And frankly I don't blame them for wanting to move to warmer weather.

I've lived in Michigan all but three years of my life. I lived in North Carolina for those three years. I know cold. Michigan is all about the cold. To me, North Carolina winters were delightful. We went outside in light sweaters on Christmas Day. It snowed once in the three years I lived there. It was just a light dusting and the whole town closed down. How cute is that?

Reality TV is pretty much new territory and there isn't much information available yet about how it affects those involved, especially children. How do you all think living their lives in a fish bowl, in front of a camera, will affect the Gosselin children? What will happen to them when people lose interest (bceause you know they will) and move on to the next new thing?

I'm willing to bet that someday in the future the Gosselin family will be the example used to explain why strict child labor laws for reality TV were established.

I don't think so. Kids are resilient... having cameras follow them around to theme parks isn't exactly abuse. It's not the same as people losing interest in child actors... those are kids in the spotlight who thrive on the attention, whether they put themselves there or not. Their job becomes their identity which is why so many child stars have trouble dealing with life once the fanfare wears off. These kids are just living their lives, it won't make a difference when people lose interest. I think the only thing that could possibly "damage" the kids is finding out what vicious things strangers on the internet have said about their family :confused3

I'm still confused as to what people actually consider to be so bad. The cameras aren't there every day. It's been stated that they're only there a few times a month, and now they go on their outings. So Kate's a little uptight... believe me, there are children out there dealing with much worse than not being able to draw with permanent markers. As others have said, there are actual abused and neglected children out there who need serious help. If only everyone worrying about the Gosselin kids (who's lives are golden compared to many, many others) put their time and energy into worrying about and helping the kids who truly need it, the world would be a much better place, as cheesy as that may sound.

OMG, I read the comments from someone that admitted that they watch the show with a notebook so that they can remember all the things they need to post about. :lmao:

Here's a picture for anyone that's interested from their vow renewal in Hawaii.

Ooh, I love winter in New York!! We just get freezing temps, slush and ice here. Blech.

I think it may, possibly, a teeny bit harmful in that the parents will have to spend more time away from their children to earn a living after being able to spend so much time together (as opposed to the standard maternity leave that working parents have). That being said, though, I imagine the kids will already be in full-time schoole by the time the train slows, so it may not be a big deal. At that point, what is there to film, anyway? Can't follow the kids to school.

On this episode of Jon and Kate Plus Eight...the kids get on the bus...Kate and Jon leave the house...everyone comes home seven hours later. Talk about ratings!!

Uh-huh...what that says...:thumbsup2 Well, no, I'm not completely confused. I do think a lot of it is jealousy. If someone is getting something someone else wants, they have to nitpick at that person, family, etc.. It does confuse me the amount of time and energy some people spend on not liking stuff and feeling the need to be so negative, in general, not just regarding this show.

Thank you for posting that! That looks beautiful! Can't wait to see that episode.

They could keep it going after they are all in school. The Roloff kids on Little People Big World are all in school and yet they still have a show. They tend to focus more on the stuff with the farm, but have done quite a few trips. They could still do Gosselin trips or film on the weekends or after school. If there is still money to be made and interest I'm sure TLC will find a way to keep it going.
