Jon and Kate Plus 8 Official Thread - Part 8

IMO nothing like in the begining. Now they more mention going to see friends from church, they seldom talk about religion or their believes. In the past they did.

Well, they've laid the foundation....but it comes up a lot--but it must just be my perception. It isn't absent as it was for the Gosselins, that is for sure.

And I go back to what I said a long time ago. I don't think any of these shows with kids should be on TV on a regular basis. A special here and there wouldn't bother me. But I doubt the Duggar kids could go against their parents and say they didn't want to be on the show (and that's one of the problems I have with the Duggars..I think their kids would be afraid to say no..if one of them ever acted like Mady when she didn't want to be taped, I wonder what would go on behind closed doors).

I happen to think both (actually of all of them on these shows including the new design nine on Bravo) families do it for the money, and so showing religion or not means little to me, and I am a Christian. There are lots of ways to get the religion across to others and I don't think putting your kids on TV for money, even if you say it's to show how a good Christian family can be, is a smart idea for the kids. I have noticed they have played it down, and I think (and this is just my opinion) it's to boost ratings. I seldom see a self admitting non Christian say they love the Duggars and even as a Christian, I don't care for how the girls are treated.

All that said, I like how they are shown on TLC (note I said shown), but I just don't think it's right (I can like what someone is like on TV, without thinking they should be there).

They do advocating living debt free, and often talk about saving and not spending. I only hope the kids have their own funds (and if not, I hope Mr Petersen goes there next) and the right to use their funds as they see fit when of age. But in my mind, I'm thinking they are so used to doing what mom and dad say, that those funds will be spent how mom and dad tell them to spend them.

Well, they've laid the foundation....but it comes up a lot--but it must just be my perception. It isn't absent as it was for the Gosselins, that is for sure.

Weird--I guess it is just our perceptions.

*******

those first couple of shows, the specials before the series .. I thought they were pretty different than the ones shown now, especially the first one (maybe two). After that, and up until now, I've seen them express their faith openly, but it just seems different to me.

with that said, much of the changes with the Duggars have been in their appearance. they are still conservative in their dress, but the children look more like individuals and updated to me.

I totally agree with whoever said upthread that Jim Bob probably negotiated their contract to include their faith .. I can't imagine that they'd do the show otherwise. I admire them for that, even I think they're doing the same thing to their children as Jon and Kate. LOL.

Since a couple of people pounced on it as an opportunity to "disapprove" of the Duggars filming...

I was only discussing that I had not noticed a difference in their "airing" of faith on the show.

I simply said that in the beginning of the story, as with any fine novel or movie or whatever--you get all of your background details of what makes a "character" (sorry for using that word) tick. What they are all about.

When we met the Duggars--they had "lots of 'splaining" to do about their lifestyle...all those questions when we look at the family and wonder "but how?" and "but why?"

We've gotten to know the Duggars--so we know longer need to know the "but how?" "But why?", b/c we already know. Even those of you who have noticed a "change"--already know. So there is no need to rehash it over and over again each episode with obvious "shout outs" to that which cannot be discussed on the DIS.

I don't think they have toned it down at all--b/c sometimes I do find myself fast forwarding through those parts when I get a little board.:rolleyes1

In any case--that is all I was commenting on. I wasn't commenting on how I feel about their beliefs or engaging in a discussion on how bad it is to film them.

Side note--I don't think that all those folks who "live like that" are scared of makeup or a simple pair of earrings or whatever. I know people who "live like that". Quoting a certain book and living the way they choose to live, does not exclude those things.

And while I personally--thought it was unusual when the makeup picked up, I don't feel that it is a contradiction of terms.

I remember for Josh and Anna's wedding, her sisters made sure that Anna wore makeup b/c it was a special day. But Anna, personally doesn't like that. And sure she still wears it on camera--but she really doesn't care for it and was a bit aghast that her sisters were making her do it.

We also must remember, that in many families, girls do not necessarily wear makeup once they turn 11 or 12. I could wear it in my early teens in very LIMITED amounts and after I turned 16, I was left to my own devices so to speak. I know many families that wouldn't allow it until 16. It's a choice about growing up more so than a dis-allowed topic type of a choice. (heck, my DH was refusing the girls to have their ears pierced until they were old enough to date b/c it was to attract boys. Yet, he couldn't remember one girl where he was attracted to her ear lobes...so my girls are pierced.)

When the Duggars began being filmed--Josh, the oldest, was only 14. Michelle had her miscarriage in between Josh and the twins and it was after that loss that they went quiverfull...so there is a litte bit of a gap to the twins--though I can't remember how long. That would make the first girl maybe 12 at the start of the show.

To me--that's why they weren't wearing makeup. As a family unit they may have decided to cross that bridge at a later date. Who knows. But I don't feel that we can "blame" TLC for that one as a sign that they have changed due to TLC.

And if you look at the ones wearing makeup--it seems to be the girls that are closer to the age of 16 and not so much the younger girls.

That is consistent with what I grew up with--and I wore short shorts and Sundays were spent at the Flea Market or watching Nascar with my mom's 4th husband.:rotfl:

I can only speak for myself, but I didn't pounce. The Gosselins and the Duggars have always been compared and until all the books are written by the kids, they will continue to be. They've been mentioned on this thread many times. It's hard not to make comparisons..good and bad about all of these type of shows and how the different families handle it.

Madge mentioned what she saw as changes and it evolved..like most anything posted on this thread LOL.

I happen to disapprove of all the kids shown on regular, steady shows, and I think it's not out of line to say that on a Kate and Jon thread. Besides, she's off DWTS, and it's awhile until the custody, what the heck else are we supposed to banter about?

Sometimes I get a little bored too. Bored, not board.

I did not pounce. I just reiterated a long standing position.

I'm opting out of what seems to be becoming a religious debate for the moment.:goodvibes

Smart move, I think I will too, especially since it's not the religious part of the Duggars that even bothers me LOL.

So has any heard where Kate is today? Did she return home with the kids? I can't believe they got all 8 kids flown to la and the paps didn't find out first.

Well it's about time that Steve was earning his paycheck.:lmao:

I do wonder how the absentee mom accusation will work, now.

Kate was on GMA today. that's all I know. LOL

Another thought I had today about Kate bing umpolished (unprofessional) - the way she always shows that she is so concerned what the tabloids and blogs are saying. Like how when she said "I'm AM having fun, with a nasty eyeroll and "contrary to popular belief" said really sarcasticly. Most personalities in the media just pretend those reports don't exist and go about their business. Kate has to give them so much attention all the time and act like it is her personal mission to correct every repor about her. It is sad really.

Also, something that was bothering me, but I couldn't quite figure out why until now was with all that crying, she was acting like the only thing in her life had just come to an end. Had that been me, fun or not, money or not, I would have been EXCITED to go home to my babies. I would have had a big smile and said "this was fun, but I can't wait to get home and get back to a normal life now" But no, she sobbed like she had just lost a family member. Ofcourse, outside her 8 "possesions" as she calls them, she has no family members left.

Isn't there some type of word for that....I can't recall what it is if there is even one.

But Kate does seem to constantly call attention to her negative attention. I liked it before when she didn't.

*******
Some people just dont' like losing and while I have disclosed that I have not seen the clip, it can *for some* really feel like their life is coming to an end.

Also, her red carpet treatment has come to an end and Kate certainly loves to be treated special.

Children--by definition--don't do that, nor should they. But I do think to a degree, that affects Kate in a possibly pscyhologically irrational manner.

I have yet on any occasion determine if I believe Kate's tears or not. She seems to suppress many emotions that when they manifest--I simply cannot tell. I can't consider them fake, genuine or anything in between.

Sara Evans chose to leave DWTS when her marriage trouble surfaced (and she ended up leaving her husband). She cried on that episode. I felt that it was genuine sadness due to the reason why she was leaving. She knew that she was going home to a much different home than when she left. And even if her kiddos were there, her heart was broken. She left b/c clearly she could not concentrate on the dancing. That was the closest I have seen someone appear as though they lost a family member when they had to leave.

I have tickets to go to Regis and Kelly tomorrow and Kate and Tony are going to be dancing live on the show tomrrow!!

Very, very cool. Have you been to the show before? Who else is on?
Have fun!

Yes, I have been three other times before I debated not going but want to go now since Kate and Tony will be there.

Drew Brees will be there, Project Runway winner, and it is Garden Week!!
