that was the worst. the worst. I really thought I was going to need a pitstop. blech. we really did pace ourselves, so it wasn't like we were in the car for hours and hours. we didn't intend to go to Cades Cove via Wears Valley, it just sort of happened... we went to Kroger's and traffic was so bad at that shopping center, we didn't have much choice but to turn right. I knew that was the road to Townsend, but forgot how curvy it is. Once we got to Caves Cove, we spent a few hours at the pinic area. That was so much fun. The place was packed because of the holiday, and it was neat to see so many families with July 4 decorations. And the drive through Cades Cove itself is so slow, it didn't bother me that much.

we didn't see any bears this trip.

What? Did you think I was calling you Bonnie instead of Marge and Madge??

Besides the feeling sick part on the road, I'm glad you had a nice time. We've had so much rain here this year, after 2+ yrs. of a drought, that everything has been so green and the trees are full and when things bloom they are just beautiful. East TN is beautiful right now!

Not much to talk about really with the show being on break. J & K have not been in the news or even photographed really with the exception of the 4th of July. I was glad to see they spent the day together with the kids.

Kinda shows how quickly this family could get some privacy and peace back if they stopped doing the show, huh?

BTW, was anyone else SERIOUSLY creeped out by the pics of the kids fighting over the tether-ball? I would be so creeped out that a stranger could get that close to them! I know that the pap probably was using a HUGE telephoto lens, but still! There was no branches in the way or anything, so it had to be pretty close. If a paparazzi can get that close, without the security guys being in the way to protect the kids from the pic, who else can get that close? That pic alone would have scared me as a parent so badly, that would have been the end of the show right there. No amount of money is worth that sort of worry.

Also, a while back in the the thread someone posted a link to a lengthy uncut interview Jon did during the 4th season. I was busy, and never took the time to comment on it, but I was stuck by 2 things during that interview. 1.) was how immature and stupid Jon seems. He was wearing some ridiculous teenager like hat or bandana on his head and he looked like an idiot - not the grown - man -father of 8 kids. They way he talks is extremely immature and slightly uneducated sounding. I had never seen an interview uncut of him before and was a bit shocked by his manner. 2.) I also was struck by when he was asked about how he feels when people say the children are being exploited, he said "well they're not, because they're not working, they're playing". I was struck by how he didn't understand the meaning of the word "exploitation". He had it confused with "child labor". Exploitation is an entirely different thing. A child does not need to be working or lift a finger to be exploited. Selling pictures of a child and keeping the money is exploitation of a child. I thought that it was sad. But then again I wasn't surprised that he didn't understand the meaning of the word, because I think anyone who truly understands what exploitation is and encompasses, wouldn't have their kids lives (whether they are playing or not) filmed day in -day out for a "reality" show while collecting money for it.

I couldn't have written that article any better! That writer nailed it! What a performance! Why are they always in the front? Fireworks in the day time? All the kids lined up perfectly? Sad, sad , sad!

Honestly, they have that big pool in their backyard. Why, wouldn't you use your pool on the 4th of July. If your sick of being "stalked" by the media then hang out in the backyard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I doubt the paps are anywhere near them. They take a pic from way back, using the high powered lens and then cut out around it, and it looks like it is close. The person who lives in the area has told us several times, they are in a private area with trees. It looks like beyond the pool it's pretty open, not a lot of trees, and near the pool, full sun.

Remember the person on the Dis that showed us how she could see Epcot from her back yard? She was a long ways (a few miles) from Disney. Those long powered lenses are amazing.

I'm just happy they are having some peace, and family time together, and it looks like they were enjoying each other.

How do we know they didn't use their pool sometime during the day? They have been in bathing suits in other pictures.

I read their recent Good Housekeeping article while I waited for an appt. today - it was before their split was official - he said he was surprised at how his life turned out, that he'd always imagined being the 54 year old married to the 19 year old.

Regarding the 4th of July photos, who sets off fireworks in the middle of the day sort of defeats the point.
Unless of course they want to be photographed?

With a 24mp DSLR and a 600mm lens along with a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter mounted on it they could easily could get those photos a football field or more away.

You can see the garage area is what is closest to the road where the paps sit. Anywhere else on the property is not an easy view, b/c there are no streets there and it's more set back .

They have 23+ acres and spend most of their time in front of the garage just like in the old house. Even with all that space, the kids play in a very tiny area in view of the people taking pictures. If it were me, I would pave a giant area right behind the garage (hey I'd even put in another door to go through on the back side) to have all the privacy in the world. Oh, but they don't seem to want privacy for the kids based on actions.

Looks like the 4th was a lot of....fun. Yeah.

Wow! You all need to scroll slightly North and East of the Gosselins. There is a house about 5 times the size of Jon and Kate's. Wonder who lives there?

I used to do a daily google search of Jon Gosselin, and I'd click on news .. filtered down to the past hour. I did that today, and there was nothing posted in the past hour and not a lot posted in the last day. A far cry from 3 weeks ago, when Jon and Kate were everywhere.

That's a pretty large area, just perfect for bikes. When the big bus picked them up, there was lots of room. You really see just how far they are from the road when you look from the back of the house. There are a lot of trees curved up the driveway, which looks to hide them a lot. There isn't much you can do against high powered lenses. The paps have no shame and would just find another way to get to them. They shouldn't have to pave their yard..they should be laws against the pap using the lenses they use.. It won't take long before those trees fill in and it will be even harder to get good pictures.

That's a good picture. It really gives more of an idea, of just how much brush the paps are peaking through. I hope it fills in more, to give them some privacy.
We were in VT all weekend and on the fourth there was a lot of fireworks during the day, leading up to the big night time show.

When we had little kids, we often did fireworks during the day. It doesn't get dark until pretty late at night during the summer, and the kids just couldn't stay up that late (or if they did, they'd be too cranky to enjoy the fireworks).

I also wondered if they did the fireworks in the driveway and front of the house to reduce the risk of accidentally starting a fire in a tree or something.

How is the weather there in mid August? We will be there on August 13th for 5 days.

HOT. But it has been hot all summer this year. August is usually hot and humid (you know, dog days of summer) but the mountains are a few degrees cooler and August is beautiful too. (I'm biased though, I do not think there is a month of the year I wouldn't say, "it is beautiful here." )
