Jon and Kate Plus 8 Official Thread - Part 5

But do people really want to watch a show about a struggling family, where the mom shows us how to do crafts using macaroni (or God forbid, shows us the mom and kids cutting out coupons, so we can see how to save)?

but that's reality for many, many people. I am always looking for ways to save money .. and saved over $75 last week at the grocery shopping the sales and using coupons. With the state of the economy and mood of the country what it is, I think it could have been successful for Jon & Kate Plus 8 to have gone that direction with the show. That's how they sucked people in in the first place, a young family struggling (in many ways) to get through each day.

Or is it like when you read an exciting book? Maybe I'll never go to the places in the book, but I love reading about them.

but that isn't reality. and certainly not the realest reality out there.

I wish I had seen the kitchen show before I redid my kitchen. They had lots of ideas that I wish I had thought about (not the under counter fridge, since I didn't want my kids to have access whenever to the fridge for soda pop). The beach trip looked wonderful. I know I wouldn't get my trip for free, but because they did, and I got to see the area, it's definately on my to do list. I can't say I will ever go back and sleep in a tent, but I do wonder, even if they have to pay for the trip, has any single mom's looked at that episode and then thought, hey, I can do that with my kids, because they saw it on the show?
I really really don't care that they are getting these things for free. I do recognize that the sponsors pay for the show, and the placements and trips are the sponsors.
I know I also have on my list of wants to do, the riverboat cruise the Roloff's took (when do they come back? I had read they were having some marriage problems, I hope that isn't true). That trip was paid for for them, and it certainly gave me a lot of interest and hope to do the same thing.

I understand the product placements, sponsored trips, etc. I get how they work and why they're a part of Jon & Kate Plus 8. What I don't understand is why every single show has to be a commercial, event, or extravaganza. The idea of Kate doing the camping alone is inaccurate, she has production assistants, nannies, and other assorted help.

I preferred the show when it really was reality. I certainly had criticism then as I do now, but when I watched the older episodes with my DD, I could relate to much of what the Gosselins were going through. Not even close now. Well, I don't watch anymore, so it doesn't really matter. LOL

I think people want to see the struggles also. Not just the constant freebies and trips.

On the older shows, Kate use to make playdough, they did crafts, not just upgrade the kitchen, living room and what could possibly be next. I know they get a lot of freebies from sponsors, however, they are still spending money like water. I hope its not "the kids" money.

Well, she made pudding paint, while at the beach, so maybe the show will have more of the 'playdough ' type stuff on it.

What is Kate spending money on like water? I can't tell what is placement and freebee's and what are items she had to purchase. Aren't the kids and Kate's clothes all placements? Kitchen was free, trip was free, camping stuff was free. No idea about her car, but I do assume it's ok for her to spend some of the money, since she too is earning it.

I guess I never saw it as a struggling financially show, but struggling to just physically get diner on the table, with so much else to do. I don't want to see her sitting down and cutting out coupons and going grecery shopping and watching her buy just the coupon stuff. Do people who are struggling with the economy really want to watch someone else struggle, or do they want fantasy? I really don't want to watch, feeding 10 on $10 a day type of shows. So, we'll have to wait and see if people watch. I personally think it's coming to a natural end. The kids are getting bigger, and the cuteness will wear off.

Every show is a commercial because that's how TLC wants it. It brings in the bucks. I know you don't watch the show, but Kate did say in the camping show that her production put up the second tent and she was grateful. We all know she has help, and I think America is smart enough to figure that out too.

I missed the reality part of it. Ever since I have watched, she had lots of people coming in to help and lots of freebee's, and I knew they were being paid. I never thought it was really reality.
But I still enjoy the show, especially the past few of them. I watch a lot of shows that are called reality but really aren't.

Those are very good points. We all have our own preferences when it comes to what we want in a TV show... and it's really difficult to speculate on what other people would want to watch, which holds true for a wide variety of shows, not just Jon & Kate Plus 8. I found it interesting when she went to the store with the coupons, because it taught me to ask about rain checks, something I hadn't thought to do before at the grocery. I liked seeing her try to get quality food and come in under budget because I do that every week.

not sure. I know people who only watch the show, and don't follow the back story. until the tabloid stuff this summer, they were largely unaware of anything that was involved with the Gosselins. they didn't realize how much help she still has.

it may not be real reality, but that is absolutely what Kate tells people it is. As recent as Monday, that's how Kate was selling it. To me, the reality is getting everyone ready to go to the basketball game, not the basketball game... that's what I want to see. :lmao:

Very true.

For me, I like seeing the vacations and fun stuff but I also enjoy watching the kids just playing at home. I remember that others thought the camping episode the Monday before last was boring, I enjoyed it. :confused3

it's taken me 3 posts to finally get to my point. good lord. LOLOL.

which is.... why they don't do more of a mixture of shows? some trips, some practical .. cooking dinner for a large family, for example. I think that's something people could relate to and appreciate. Along with taking a vacation, how about tips about packing for a vacation?

I have my own reasoning for why we don't see the more practical tips .. LOL. But there are lots of things they can do with the show to make it less promotional/freebie-ish, IMO.

I wonder if that isn't just where they will be going with Kate. Maybe she'll show us how to use her big kitchen LOL. It was cute watching the kids play with a toy in the front room. The camping trip in the backyard wasn't a trip, and it was something that a large family could do and not spend a lot of money. They may have shown the Hershey chocolate, but they also showed the kids having fun eating the marshmallows. Seeing the kids get burried in the sand, and dumping water over one of the heads, trying to get the sand off (and putting more on in the meantime) was a nice mixture. Just watching them enjoy the bacon and sausage was more 'homestyle' (at the beach).
I think you would actually enjoy the new shows.

if they ever get away from reiterating the paparazzi presence and Kate being alone, I might tune in again. the horse it dead. everyone knows about how the show is going to be from now on. LOL.

and regarding the camping? it's only cheap if you have (or have access to) the supplies. tents, lanterns, sleeping bags, etc. all add up to a lot of $$ .. we thought we might do that last month when the weather was so cool. it was cheaper for us to get a hotel room. LOL.

Lots of new articles on Radaronline this morning. This one bothers me. Is Jon buying these cars for the kids?? That is his reason for everything. :confused3

If he can't see that Hailey is with him for the celebrity and the money he is just crazy. http://www.radaronline.com/exclusiv...lin-and-hailey-glassman-shop-mercedes-porsche

I'm not sure it's right to assume that if Jon and Hailey are car shopping that he is paying -- her father could easily afford to buy her a couple of cars. And my brother goes car shopping about every month just for fun -- but they haven't bought most of the cars that he did a test-drive in (yes, he's tried out several Porches over the years)

Wow! -- just Wow! Sounds like this will be AWKWARD even to watch. This makes me wonder what the point of her doing these interviews actually is. I know she has a PR team, so what is it that they want us to think?

I just don't know why they're on the front lawn when they have so much land :confused3 When you turn the volume up, you can hear cameras clicking and the paps talking to each other. There was another thread on Dis the other day where people shared their views on others taking pictures of their family -- it reassured me that I would not be alone in wanting to shield my kids from these photographers.

Some people might say they have a right to play on their front lawn -- it's their property, etc. But no way would I have my DD out there if she had somewhere she could play in privacy. I just think J & K are courting the paps way more than they want to let on. BTW, the cynical side of me wants to say that the nanny was told to take the kids out front so everybody could see that they're having fun while Kate is away doing interviews ie. when they're on the front lawn, there is always a hidden agenda.

I agree Madge. The older shows were much more entertaining with the family playing at home or doing crafts around the table. The camping episode was just plain boring--20 minutes of toasting marshmellows--which would of never happened on the earlier shows due to the closeness of the fire.

How much more of the beach do we have to see. If I had a $10,000/week rental, I'm sure it would be enjoyable too!

Kate is doing everything alone--those crew members, nannies and helpers are figments of our imagination.

I don't care about Kate's updated kitchen. She appreciates it as much as the pile of "going green" driveway lights that are thrown near the tree.

I don't feel sorry for Kate doing these interviews. She wanted to appear and too bad that the hosts ask tough questions. She wants to sugarcoat everything. She is sly.

I think Jon has completely lost it. No hope for him. TLC would be smart to sever the ties and get rid of him.

By the way, I saw Multiple Blessings for sale for $1.09--at this rate they will be giving them away soon.

What is she spending money on??? I'm from NY, F.A.O. Schwartz is not cheap by any means, constant visits to Starbucks, spa treatments?? Unless these are all freebies, she is spending money. In today's economy where people are hurting for money, she is flaunting it. About the freebies, someone pays for it--people who buy the companies products. Advertising to some extent--a little overboard.

She's helping to stimulate the economy :)

I don't find her spending to be outrageous compared to the large purchases Jon has been doing.

So people should not be allowed to buy anything because others are hurting? So I should not go to Disney in September because people are hurting? So everyone should cancel their trips? Let's just not spend anything then so everyone can hurt.

I'm sure since TLC was filming there they helped pay for the $10,000 cottage rental. She's not flaunting her Starbucks and spa stuff, the paparazzi are following her around and taking pictures of it and you are choosing to look at those photos. FAO is not that much more expensive than a normal toy store depending on what is being purchased there.

You have to remember not all the viewers are talking about this show everyday ... like us:rolleyes1

They have viewers who only watch once a week & are not following every move on line.

It is like my mother with Big Brother she only knows what they show her on CBS:rotfl:
