Jon and Kate Plus 8 Official Thread - Part 5

Kate is going to do whatever it takes to keep this trainwreck of a show going. I think TLC is trying to play her as the "victim" and Jon as the "villian". I don't agree with the way Jon is acting, but who knows what he put up with married to her for 10 years.
I think the viewer audience will drop more and more as each week goes by. Many viewers said they were tired of viewing vacations, donated freebies and just an unrealistic family life for a large family where neither parent works!

I think there is a HUGE difference between a show based on caring for 8 babies and a show about 8 kids (who can walk, talk, dress themselves and are old enough to attend school) Some of us still don't know how we got through the 1st 6 months with 1 baby, and can't imagine doing it with 6 and having 2 toddlers. There was nowhere for the ratings to go but down, since by now most people don't think that Kate is the perfect mom who should be copied in everything she does. And I really don't want to watch the kids as they enter their teen years. :scared1:

Let's just assume for a moment that Jon is a nice guy who doesn't want to do the show anymore. His best bet is to take the high road here, let Kate take over the show with the kids and fade into privacy. He has plenty of time to tell his side of the story in a few years, since saying anything now is just inviting a rebuttal.

For now, he should just keep his mouth shut and release a statement saying as much. Are you reading Jon? (or your PR people) -- the only points you can score now are by spending time with your kids (in the back yard, please)

Whew! I just got caught up on my thread reading. Wow...working really cuts into my DisBoard reading:surfweb:

I think at the very least if TLC is making Jon the "villian" then turn about it fair play. I think TLC has made a lot of money showcasing Kate's bad side. I mean after all other, similar reality shows have kind of fallen flat.

I think it is fair to say that some nasty little kid will say something crappy to Mady and Cara. They have probably already had some nasty comments about the show or being famous. But I'm always stunned by how incredibly kind kids can be too. Other kids will take up for them and there friends will come to their defense. That is usually enough to shut down a bully.

That's right..they both had to deal with each other. I'm sure it was hard enough having 8 kids without throwing in the 9th (Jon). I also think (just my own opinion) she may have had a hard time holding onto the money they were earning, based with how easily he is spending it now.

I agree. And remember too that Jon bought that snazzy, mid-life crisis sports car without Kate's knowledge. Of course we all saw his expensive shoes on the cover of In Touch as well! Kate is always dressed well too but not over the top expensive IMO. How much are Ed Hardy shirts anyway? I'm curious...

I guess the point is that yes, they both had to deal with each other. Kate treated Jon like a child (I'm thinking he probably was like one) but it's still unkind for her to do so. It's not respectful or loving but then again, who hasn't been guilty of treating their spouse unkindly at times? I know I have and it's not something I'm proud of but it does happen. Of course Jon was more passive in how he spoke to Kate...making faces behind her back, snide comments to the camera or sometimes just yelling at her. Bottom line is their marriage wasn't healthy. Too bad they couldn't have worked on that before they had 6 more kids.

If they off Jon (I wouldn't care either way) and put a new spin on the show (Kate plus 8) would he not get paid??

If that is the case how would he pay for all of his stuff? He's the best dressed, most traveled unemployed person I know.

What do you guys think? Would he reap a portion of the show's proceeds if he wasn't there as part of his auth for the kids to appear? :confused3

I really agree with this. They both were the problem. Yes, Kate was ugly to Jon a lot. And yes, Jon didn't take up for himself until he was so frustrated with Kate that he was done with her and the marriage. (which is what I believe happened)

He would still get money from past shows being shown, and investments he may have made.

Because all we saw was the edited show, we really don't know just how they were to each other. He did his part, he either wasn't as vocal as Kate, or TLC didn't show it, or maybe Kate was even worse to him. Who knows, they could have been in the pits or working on their marriage way back in the last house, when Kate asked to have something put in in her, er their room.

I agree with DMRick, Jon would get residuals for all of the shows made before he got out. But I also think he could insist that Kate's proceeds from the show continue to pay all the bills for the house and the kids (it just seems reasonable to me), meaning he would only have to support himself.

I know I've said this before, but I find it really hard to believe that they would have opted to sign up with TLC again and again if they were being portrayed unfairly. Unfortunately, both of them probably behaved even worse when the cameras were off, or it was edited out. There are a lot of things we weren't shown, I'm sure, such as Kate spanking the kids.

And, yes, it does seem like they may have been sleeping separately even before the new house. It was the violin that Kate got mad about -- she said a couple of times that she had asked him to put it in her room and that she couldn't find it (I saw it on a video called "kate's greatest meltdowns")

Hmm ... maybe but I know I've had a slip of the tongue before and said "my" room instead of "our" room. DH says "Baby, it's OUR room" But then again I've only been married 3 years, not 10.

It's my understanding that Jon got a box of freebies from Ed Hardy.

and I wouldn't be surprised if Kate didn't have an agreement with Ann Taylor LOFT. She wears a lot of it. Same with Banana Republic.

Yes, that's what it was, the violin.

Remember, we saw it as being portrayed badly, but perhaps they did not. It was just their life. Plus..there was all that money to be made. I'm sure as the show went on, they earned more and more. So it's easy to overlook some people saying you treated yoru hubby or wife badly. I thought the blame was totally on Kate's shoulders, that she treated Jon terrible, and it wasn't until I saw the reruns, and noticed what he was doing to her, that I started to no be so fond of him. So maybe other's missed his teatment of her as well.

I do like the show without him, so far. It's just more like a fun show now.

Interesting note that now the Chicago Sun Times is reporting that Kate was a b**** after the interview.

That interview was very interesting and I think that the guy at the end hit the nail on the head, as far as Kate doing what she needs to do to keep people supporting her. To me, her answer and her reaction to the wedding ring question looked rehearsed. I don't buy it. She's playing us people! :lmao:

To be quite honest, I am sick of the show. They are always getting free trips, free kitchens, free clothes and camping things and doing all of these things that normal families just couldn't do and can't relate to. Now I hear that she is wanting a talk show. Give me a break. When is it going to end?

It's my understanding that the reason why reality shows can be made so cheap is because the "actors" don't get paid as much as a union show and also the participants do not get money from residuals. So I doubt J&K are seeing a dime from the reruns, at least not the first few season. JMO.

My thoughts exactly!!

Yesterday on "Chelsea Lately" they were making fun of the show. The comics were commenting on Jon hooking up with Michael Lohen. They said the only thing those two have in common is they are pimping out their kids. They also said that usually before you have kids you have a job, not have 6 kids and look for a job?? The best part was that Jon thought he was finally famous until he hooked up with Lohen a D List celebrity!!

But do people really want to watch a show about a struggling family, where the mom shows us how to do crafts using macaroni (or God forbid, shows us the mom and kids cutting out coupons, so we can see how to save)? Or is it like when you read an exciting book? Maybe I'll never go to the places in the book, but I love reading about them. I wish I had seen the kitchen show before I redid my kitchen. They had lots of ideas that I wish I had thought about (not the under counter fridge, since I didn't want my kids to have access whenever to the fridge for soda pop). The beach trip looked wonderful. I know I wouldn't get my trip for free, but because they did, and I got to see the area, it's definately on my to do list. I can't say I will ever go back and sleep in a tent, but I do wonder, even if they have to pay for the trip, has any single mom's looked at that episode and then thought, hey, I can do that with my kids, because they saw it on the show?
I really really don't care that they are getting these things for free. I do recognize that the sponsors pay for the show, and the placements and trips are the sponsors.
I know I also have on my list of wants to do, the riverboat cruise the Roloff's took (when do they come back? I had read they were having some marriage problems, I hope that isn't true). That trip was paid for for them, and it certainly gave me a lot of interest and hope to do the same thing.

I think people want to see the struggles also. Not just the constant freebies and trips.

There is a new show on MTV that is called something like "16 & pregnant". They said it is so popular because people can relate to the struggles of a 16 year old having a baby. I saw it once and its an eyeopener.

On the older shows, Kate use to make playdough, they did crafts, not just upgrade the kitchen, living room and what could possibly be next. I know they get a lot of freebies from sponsors, however, they are still spending money like water. I hope its not "the kids" money.
