Job Benefits

Wow, thank you everyone. That is a LOT to consider and we would speak to a benefit consultant if he gets a job offer and we decide that route. This is something we are considering because it is a job he loves that is not very common in Canada, but positions in the States come up every day, so we have a lot to pray about!

Many Thanks!

The other thing you should know is that the health insurance coverage can be changed every year by the employer. Most of the time the changes are likely to be small, but they are usually (though not always) bad for the employee because they stem from rising insurance costs. In 2009, my employer switched to a benefit packaged that paid 100% of our cost with no out of pocket for the employee. I hadn't seen benefits like that for almost 25 years!

For small employers (less than 50 employees), health insurance benefits can be discontinued entirely, but this extremely rare.

Best of luck to your DH in his job search and in your decision. -- Suzanne

OP, I think you really need to assess what it is you need to have in terms of a U.S. salary and benefits to come out equal to what you already have in Canadian salary and benefits. Otherwise, you wind up comparing apples to oranges. You will need that consultant!

IMO, your DH would really need to make a bundle more money in salary, and still have reasonable benefits, for you to actually wind up ahead as the result of a move. Your husband's new employer should also pay for your move (or at least part of it) and purchase your current house in Canada if you fail to find a buyer on your own--this is a provision that can be a real deal-breaker, if you have trouble selling your house.

OP, none of us know what changes will take place once our new healthcare laws go into everyday use. We have a change taking place in our national healthcare regulations and any answers provided here are pure speculation.
