Wow, thank you everyone. That is a LOT to consider and we would speak to a benefit consultant if he gets a job offer and we decide that route. This is something we are considering because it is a job he loves that is not very common in Canada, but positions in the States come up every day, so we have a lot to pray about!

The other thing you should know is that the health insurance coverage can be changed every year by the employer. Most of the time the changes are likely to be small, but they are usually (though not always) bad for the employee because they stem from rising insurance costs. In 2009, my employer switched to a benefit packaged that paid 100% of our cost with no out of pocket for the employee. I hadn't seen benefits like that for almost 25 years!
For small employers (less than 50 employees), health insurance benefits can be discontinued entirely, but this extremely rare.
