Job Application process

Follow up Question... Anyone recommend a company that will help me with my Resume.. I want a Resume that will catch a recruiters eye and not fall through the cracks.

My son is in computer IT too. I guess in his case the employment agency acted as the head hunter. IT is a funny field, all those folks with Microsoft Certifications who can't fix anything, and the all those folks with no certifications that can fix issues in a snap.

Microsoft certifications? That's basically like a handful of potato chips in terms of my husband's credentials in IT. As in he's got handfuls of Microsoft certifications over the years, but they definitely would be considered in the junk food category in terms of his resume.

Nope, they want them to respond. It is on online application for each job and after you list the reference, they contact them and ask them their own specific questions to answer and when you go to your application it will say, "complete" next to each reference who has responded, and then your entire application will say "complete" once everyone has responded.

It makes me NUTS. I applied to two different school districts and both of them had their own set of questions to answer and wanted three references to ALL respond before they would even talk to you.

Now I am trying to get into a grad program and they want 3 reference letters with their own questions as to whether you are capable of completing the program, if you are suited for the program, etc.....

It is CRAZY!

I wish I could just upload the reference letters I have, but there is nowhere to do that. They only have spaces for a name, email, and phone number of a reference. One of my references has sent me the questions each of them asked.

That's more common in academia than other areas. I felt so bad for my husband's recommenders when he was on the job market. I'm sure in most cases, they could send the same letter for each request, but every school is different -- and he applied for almost 45 positions! Just getting all those applications together was a huge task.

Not knowing your location, I would recommend a national firm such as Robert Half. Once you apply as a new candidate, they will reach out with a headhunter who can sit down with you and go over your resume, plus give you some possibly leads for jobs. I've gotten two temp-to-hire jobs from Robert Half, starting as a consultant and eventually getting hired full time.

As my son's boss puts it, "If Microsoft knew how to fix their software, we'd be out of business"
