Hey everyone. I'm so excited that JetBlue just extended their schedule. We booked for January 2014. YEA!!! I will be travelling with DH and DS (2yrs 8mos at time of travel). I booked ROW #3 A,B,C. I thought the extra legroom may allow DS to play with his cars on the floor for a little bit (he is tiny) and I like the idea of being one the the first people off the plane. Has anyone ever sat in Row#3 and what was your experience? I believe the plane is the AIRBUS A320.

I'm GUESSING, but I would be surprised if he has room to play with his cars on the floor. On the tray table would be a better bet IMO.

Not really that much room to play on the floor for a child of any size.

Not only will there be very little space on the floor there is No Way I would let my child play there as they aren't cleaned very often and never between flights.

In addition your child will be required to be in a seatbelt/carseat when the fasten seat belt lights are on which is 90% of the time and it may be difficult to get him back in if you take him out for anything other than a trip to the potty etc.

Something he can play with in the seat would be a better choice, stickers, fun new foods to snack on, books to read together, finger games etc.

If you go to seatguru . com you can look up the aircraft you will be flying and see the seat configuration in advance.

Yes, it allows a bit more room, but for legs to be stretched out a bit, not for playing on. I wouldn't count on your child being able to be on that floor. First of all....not being belted in is never a good idea. Second? That floor is disgustingly filthy.
I would plan on having him play with his toys on the tray..after you wipe it down.

You know I was very curious after this question was posted. I have only traveled with an infant one time.

I was surprised how many "mom boards" pages came up with a google search for booking the front row seats and allow the child to play on the floor after the plane takes off.

Then at the bottom of one of the pages, there was a post from a flight attendant that says one of the most dangerous things you can do during a flight would be to sit the child on the floor - in case of an emergency or even turbulence, they could be injured or you would not have time to grab them or you might panic if there is an emergency. She didn't even recommend flying as a lap baby, only in a car seat.

A long time ago, when my dd was probably about 7 or so, she is now 19, we had a seat in the very front row. She was having some pretty severe gas pains...she was able to stand up and bend over in order to move the gas bubbles a bit. But I doubt she would have had room to get down on the floor and do anything. There was a bit more room in that first row, but after that row? I doubt she would have been able to stand up and do any bending over.

No there would not be enough room for him to play. We always book extra leg room since dh is 6'7". You get a few extra inches not feet.

For safety reasons, we always treat airplanes like we do cars. We don't give our kids the option of undoing seatbelts (except for bathroom breaks on planes of course). I agree that you need to find toys your DS can play with while in his seat. That said, the front row is a great choice because your DS couldn't kick the seat in front of him (accidentally or intentionally).

Besides the safety and cleanliness reasons, I wouldn't letting kid play on the floor even if he did fit. Because the space is so tight the child is going to be hitting the seat in front of them as they move, even if it isn't on purpose. Not to mention trying to chase down the toys if they roll out if the kid's reach.

The last several flights I was on had the seatbelt sign on most of the time. On the last 2 the pilot announced that even though the seatbelt sign was off passengers were to be in their seats if not in the bathroom, waiting for the bathroom, or getting something from the overhead bin because of the possibility of unexpected turbulence.

By now the photos of the mess caused by turbulence in the middle of food service on a recent Singapore Airlines flight have made their way around the internet. The mess was significant but fortunately no one was seriously injured. But the situation could have been much worse.

Every year dozens of people are injured – some severely and some even die – from unexpected turbulence in the air. The most serious injuries are usually caused by unbuckled passengers slamming their bodies against the aircraft, often the ceiling. Broken necks and spinal cord injuries have resulted. Most of the time, it’s not you being flung upward – but the ceiling coming down and slamming you – because you’re not attached to the aircraft seat as it descends rapidly with the rest of the aircraft.

Wear your seatbelt at all times and teach children the same. Not even sure if the FA's would tolerate a child playing on the floor. Enjoy your extra legroom.

While he says the incident wasn't as bad as reported in the media, it was a good reminder to us to keep our seatbelts on at all times (he was wearing his when the flight hit turbulence).

I agree with the other posters. The floor is dirty, the 38" pitch doesn't mean there is a big play area and it's much safer to stay buckled in your seat.

YES. I do not have children, but there is nothing more irritating to me than someone (child or adult!) who inadvertently (or otherwise) hits the back of my seat - whether on a plane, at church, the movies, etc. I would imagine a child on the floor would constantly hit the back of the seat, and even the suggestions of allowing the child to play on the tray table made me think that the person in the seat in front of them could probably feel that too, since the tray table is meant for holding food and not movement/playing. If you tick off the person in front of you, it will be a long flight.

Any chance the exit row seats are still available? I know on some planes, the exit row seats' tray tables fold down into the arm rest area rather than coming down from the seat back in front of you. This might be a better option if your plane offers it.

NO WAY is there any room for your DS to play on the floor. For safety reasons he really has to be buckled up for the duration of the flight. He can play on the tray with cars or I would suggest bringing and iTouch or an iPad. Also bring ear plugs and he can watch TV.

The floors aren't clean and the seats are narrow, even though its "Even More Space".

You're right, I didn't even think about that. In that case, I think the seats in the first row of the plane have tray tables that go into the side as well. I am assuming those seats are long booked by now though.

I've had row 1 on jet blue before, and its not as much space as above, but would give a little one a bit of space to get out some wiggles without disturbing others.

Absolutely, JetBlue bulkhead has nowhere near that room. What I meant to emphasize was that in the bulk head row, a little one wouldn't be hitting anybody's seat-back and will have a bit more space to simply have a few moments out of seat/car-seat with minimal disruption to others.
