Jersey girls don't pump gas

Your state is confusing.
The rest of the United States is so used to pumping our own gas.
Anyway, what is the correct procedure, do you pay before the attendant puts gas into your vehicle?
Or does he collect after the gas is put in.
Most times I use my gas card to get gas, does the attendant do this for you too?
What happens if you want to make a purchase in the store.
Sorry, but the protocol was so confusing when I stopped for gas. The attendant looked at me like I was trying to rob him or something. Neither of us knew what the other was doing.

When I pull up to the pump, I usually use my debit card, hand it to the attendant and say "Can you fill it up regular?". If you use cash, then it's "fill it regular...cash". If you only want a specific amount in your car then it's "can I get $20 of regular?". If it's debit, you hand your card to the person as soon as you get there, if it's cash, you give it to him at the end.

As for the OP, I'm from NJ....born and raised. I think not having to pump my own gas is great (esp, when I can run into the store while my gas gets pumped). However, it's not that big of a deal to pump my own gas either. I went to college in PA, so I was pumping my gas for quite sometime. Sometimes it is quicker although it irks me when people leave their car in the port to shop in the store, and are blocking the pump. If NJ did switch to pumping their own gas, you'd get over the whole get out of your car business and realize it's not horrible. Just my opinion.

My coworkers and I were talking about the election last month. Our current governor lost. I am from New Jersey.

I am a Democrat, but admitted that I didn't vote for him... When I told my two male coworkers that "he lost my vote the day he proposed I should pump my own gasoline." My two male coworkers thought I was nuts.

In New Jersey, there is a sign on every gas pump that states it is unlawful for patrons to pump their own gas. (only New Jersey and Oregon have this law) New Jersey has had consistantly amongst the lowest prices for gas in the country despite full service only. The governor proposed that I would save $.06/gallon or $.60 per week pumping my own . (yeah, right) This in a state where property taxes average 6000k for a modest detached home.

If I want to save $.60 , I'll clip coupons. Gas is nasty, stinky stuff. He proposed that I get out of my car, leaving my children in their car seats, possibly dressed in heels,stocking and a dress in 10 degree weather. Yeah , right.

I am not the only New Jersyean who feels this way. No other issue received such a pubic outcry as this. Woman's groups, and groups for the elderly and disabled came out against Corzine's proposal to change to self service at gas stations.

I agree with you co-workers...but I also like not pumping gas. My parents have a house in Sea Isle NJ.

I am from NJ and like not having to pump gas. However, it stinks when you get a lazy attendant and it takes them forever to come back to your car when its done.

I have gotten out of my truck and started taking the pump out, only to have an arab guy yell at me. lol

This is so true if you are at a Super Wawa in Jersey you can wait a long time to get gas.... I would rather pump my own.


BTW My husband thinks NJ is a Police State ...what is with all the cops everywhere?

One of the reason I love being a Jersey Girl. I pumped my own gas for the first time last year when I went to Florida without my husband. Otherwise he takes care of it when we are traveling out of state.

Having lived in NJ since I was 13, I can say that I love not having to pump. However, I have never pumped my own. My daughter, who has lived in two other states besides NJ where she pumped her own says that in the warm weather, she would rather pump her own. It's much quicker. But once the temperature drops, she loves NJ. To each her own.

Actually, the real reason that I didn't vote for him was property taxes. He said that he had the expertise to fix this problem. Clearly, he didn't.

People who pay over $500 a month in property taxes can't be convinced that pumping their own gas will give them an improved quality of life.

"Pumping your own gas" was his big money saving idea.

Gas stations do employ people--that was a big point also.

I HATE pumping my own gas in the winter time! I love going to visit my friend who lives by the gas station that pumps for you. The weird thing is they are normally slightly cheaper than gas stations on my side of town

The only thing I like about getting gas in NJ is that it is cheap- I HATE having people pump gas for me. I prefer to do it myself. One statin in NJ took my credit card and walked inside the station with it to swipe it on a machine in there ! I did NOT care for that at ALL- I prefer swiping my card at the pump myself and not having some guy take it and go where I can't see him with it! I like being able to hop out of the car, pump gas and hop back in and leave and not having to wait for some guy to stroll over to do it for me, especially if I am in a hurry. I would be very upset if some politition decided that pumping gas was to hard for a person and we had to have attendants do it for us!

I live in NJ and work in PA and prefer to pump my own gas when it's warm - I get out of the gas station much faster. During the winter, it's nice to stay in my car.

DS goes to college in PA also and tries to wait to get gas when he gets back over the border to save .20 a gallon!

I LOVE not pumping gas. I don't see where self serve would save us so much money. And it would put more people out of work. How does that make sense? Believe me, there were plenty of other reasons not to vote for Corzine. How about the laundry list of politicians (many were his associates or appointees) that were brought up on corruption charges?

Jersey girl here. I'm sure I could pump my own gas if I had to but I have no desire too. the gas stations I go to are quick about pumping the gas, I don't see how I could do it any faster. I never once go into a store attached to a gas station so that is a non issue for me.

I wouldn't mind if they had some self service pumps here. Make the people who want to pump their own gas pay the extra.

I love visiting NJ and not having to pump gas! I would definitely pay more for that option. In my area, I don't even know of a full service station! I guess it doesn't really matter because I rarely fill up the tank myself (DH does it for me), but it would still be nice.

I wish they had that here I hate when my DH forgets to put gas in my car because I hate the way it smells and the thought of touching the handle to pump it My OCD kicks in and I just cant touch it !

Good prices at the pump when I drive through NJ.

But I don't like to wait for an attendant to do what I can do just as easily. They also try to squeeze every drop they can into the tank which sometimes results in an overflow. I do not want gas streaming down the side of my car.

Pumping gas isn't that bad. I'm from MI and always pumped my gas until I came to NJ. You pay at the pump, so you do leave your kids in the car but you insert your credit or debit card into the gas pump and pay that way. I didn't vote for Corzine for other reasons.

By the way -- are we supposed to tip the gas pumpers?

The other reason I don't like other people pumping my gas... they don't always close the tank the right way. There was this place by my school where it's full service, and the gas costs the same as pumping your own across the street, but they never would close the tank properly. I wouldn't realize it, so then I would be driving, when all of a sudden, my check engine light comes on. I just don't trust people enough to do it properly, I guess.

I could not imagine not pumping my own gas, even out in the cold. I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to in heels, and if you can't maybe you shouldn't wear them. I think this is kind of a petty thing to complain about.

I think it is nuts to not want to pump your own gas.

But then again having someone pump it for me is not an option to compare to since they do not exist here.

I would like the option to pump my own or pay for full service.

I lived in Oregon for a while and it irked me to no end that I was not 'allowed' to pump my own gas. I had never heard of such a thing and thought the guy was kidding the first time I tried to pump it myself.

You're kidding, right?? The millions of women in the 48 other states manage to pump their own gas...in heels and in below zero temps even!!

I think it's nuts not to want to pump your own gas. It sounds snooty and pretentious that you can't "lower" yourself enough to put some gas in your car.
