Jersey girls don't pump gas

The thing is here in NJ we don't trust our elected officials, with good reason. If they say that if we go to pump your own and you will save money, it's not going to be true. Somehow the state will pocket the savings. It won't go to good programs or to reduce debt. They will just mismanage some more of our money. It would become like a tax only we get to pump out own gas. On top of it, all the entry level jobs pumping gas would be gone and those folks would be collecting government money. NJ has some of the cheapest gas in the state. Why mess with it. This suggestion brought to us by the same people who wanted to sell our state highways to companies who would triple the tolls. Our previous governor used state funds to bring his illegal immigrant boyfriend into the country and give him a high paying state job he wasn't qualified for and lacked the security clearance for. He never paid any of that money back.

I've never pumped gas in my entire life and I never will, God willing.

Sorry, guys, it's a Jersey girl's dream come true not to pump gas. I never have to worry about dirty hands, freezing cold, splashing by accident, wandering over to the store to pay for the gas, etc., etc. I can fill the car up and not worry about odd amounts. I pull up, order what I want, hand over a credit card or cash, and drive away.

Snooty and pretentious? :rotfl2: Call it what you want, for me it's convenient and easy.

Oh, and we tip 20% for take-out in restaurants, too. Just thought I'd add that since it's a bone of contention on another highly visible thread.

I don't have to worry about dirty hands, splashing or wandering into the store to pay, either. It's called paying attention to what you're doing and pay at the pump. ;)

You can do all of that an pump your own gas too. Our gas station has hand sanitizer on the pump so if you are a germophobe you can take care of that there. I don't know that I have ever splashed gas on myself and if it is cold, sit in your car while it fills just like you do if someone pumps it for you. Big deal.

Seriously. It's not brain surgery or black bear hunting.

Thanks, but no thanks. I can put on some lipstick, text a few people, check directions, have a conversation, etc., while waiting for the tank to fill up. I don't want to pay attention to pumping gas.

I know. But it's not something I want to do, care to learn, or feel enhances my lifestyle! If it did any of the aforementioned, I'd probably be interested in doing it. As it stands, it doesn't and I don't.

And yes, I realize that sounds spoiled rotten to many of you. But since that's the NJ system, I'm happy to use it and happy to employ people to do it. Hell, if the service is good, I'll even tip the guy.

Amen, sistah. I can understand not wanting to pump your own gas in the 50's when most stations did it for you, but those days are long gone except in NJ and OR.

I've pumped my own gas all my life and honestly don't know what I'd do if an attendent ran out to stop me from filling my car up. Kind of like having an attendent at the store to push my cart for me, y'know?

Umm...thanks, but I can manage. Now get your hands off my car(t) before I summon a policeman. :rotfl:

:lmao::lmao::lmao: You're kidding, right?? :lmao::lmao::lmao:The millions of women in the 48 other states manage to pump their own gas...in heels and in below zero temps even!!

I think it's nuts not to want to pump your own gas. It sounds snooty and pretentious that you can't "lower" yourself enough to put some gas in your car. :snooty:

Yes.. women/men in 48 other states pump their own gas in the rain, sleet and snow.

and then they pay more for that lack of service.

It's really about paying more and getting less.

No one in New Jersey actually believed that gas prices would really go down.

You realize we don't really stand in the rain/sleet/snow, right? The gas pumps are under cover. :rotfl:

And as golfgal posted above, your gas prices really aren't that low compared to the rest of the country. ;)

I am a Democrat, but admitted that I didn't vote for him... When I told my two male coworkers that "he lost my vote the day he proposed I should pump my own gasoline." My two male coworkers thought I was nuts.

Well, I don't think Corzine lost the election because of his proposal to allow self-service gas stations. The reasons he did lose are another discussion entirely, and one we aren't permitted to have on the Dis. ;)

That said, I have no intention of pumping my own gas EVER. If self-serve ever does come to NJ, the task of pumping gas will be assigned to my husband. It'll be right up there with mowing lawns and taking out the garbage. There are reasons why I got married in the first place, and one of them is that there are some tasks I simply refuse to do. And it's fair because there are many things I do for my DH that he wouldn't do for himself.

Exactly! We would not pay any less for the priviledge of pumping our own gas.

Have you seen the stations in Jersey? MANY don't have covered areas.

Wow, stuck up much??? :rotfl2:

I'm just kidding by the way, but that was the first thing that popped into my loudmouth head.

I have been a Jersey girl for 18 years, and love not pumping my own gas. I have no idea how..when I lived in NY, I went to full service, or had whoever was with me in the car pump it :rolleyes1.

I am also a democrat who didn't vote for Corzine..but not because of that... He did a horrible job for 4 years..why put him back into office for another 4!!

If they did go to self service, alot of young men would be out of work, and I honestly don't think we would save any money. It works the way it is.

It takes two seconds for me to start pumping my gas. It's not that hard, or gross. If you own a car, you should be able to pump your own gas. It's part of life. In drivers ed, our teachers would make us pump gas (I already knew how as I'd do it for my mom)

Are you for real?? :) heaven forbid your husband was laid up in bed for a few days. Boy, would your house stink.

:confused3 After reading this thread... do women in NJ really feel they have some entitlement over the rest of us women in the US? What happened to being self sufficient? I have no problem mowing the yard. It's great exercise. I take out the trash. I pump my own gas - shocker! I also raise my children without the help of a nanny or a babysitter, do the grocery shopping, and pay the bills. My hubby earns the money.

We lived in NY for six years, and I always wondered why NYers said they would never go to Jersey.

I have nothing against those that love living there or whatever, to each his/her own... I just don't get it. No one would ever "lose my vote" just because they mentioned pumping my own gas.

Those that have never pumped their own gas, have you never gone to another state? Ever in your life?

Yep same here :thumbsup2
All the women I know can and do pump gas & from being in the south some can even clean fish & skin out a deer LOL

I myself try to be self sufficient have a small farm here we eat what we grow :thumbsup2

Sorry this may help

1.
Step 1

Find out which side of the car the gas tank fill spout is on.
2.
Step 2

Pull up to the appropriate gas pump, making sure the fill spout is facing the pump.
3.
Step 3

Turn off the car.
4.
Step 4

Open the gas tank door. On newer cars, this is done with a button from the inside of the car, but on older cars the tank can be opened by hand, often with a key.
5.
Step 5

Unscrew the cap of the gas tank.
6.
Step 6

Put the gas cap where you won't forget it.
7.
Step 7

If you're paying with a credit card, run the card through the machine and follow any printed instructions. Otherwise, see the attendant. Many gas stations in cities require you to pay before you pump.
8.
Step 8

Select the type of gas you'd like (regular, premium, super). Never put diesel fuel in a nondiesel engine.
9.
Step 9

Lift the handle of the gas hose off its stand and insert the nozzle into the tank of your car. Make sure it is securely inserted by pushing it in firmly.
10.
Step 10

Push the switch or press the button on the pump to allow the gas to flow. This switch is different at different stations; follow the instructions at the pump.
11.
Step 11

Pull up on the trigger located in the handle of the gas hose. This will release the gas into the tank of your car.
12.
Step 12

Some triggers lock into place, freeing you to wash windows and check oil while the machine pumps gas. Check for this feature.
13.
Step 13

Note that when the tank is full, the fuel will stop pumping. Remove the gas hose. Don't try to "top off" the gas tank because this will lead to spillage.
14.
Step 14

Firmly screw the gas tank cap back into place and shut the gas tank door.

Yep same here :thumbsup2

My hubby is out hunting with the dog right now! ha ha ha:thumbsup2

I've been in NJ plenty of times. I actually hated the fact that I couldn't pump my own gas. I'm ten times faster than those attendants are. And paying tolls every fifty feet is annoying too. lol
