I am VERY concerned when someone who has just come back from their cruise on Feb 19 that "almost 1 out of 4 people got stung by jelly fish" when they were at CC.

I think that sounds really scary. Who still dares to snorkel or swim at CC if there is jelly fish EVERYWHERE.

Can anyone confirm that?

I think it just depends on luck of the draw. I would hope Disney would announce if jellyfish were a problem at CC before getting off the ship. When we were at CC on Nov 6, 2002 we snorkeled and swam the entire day. Never saw even one jellyfish or heard that anyone else had either. I don't know how prevalent or rare jellyfish infestations at CC are ? I don't feel like I've read that much on the topic on the boards to be overly concerned. The only thing I am suprised at is that Disney was not warning folks about this on the cruise that the poster talked about 1 out of 4 people getting stung.
I would take the advice of another poster that had said it's a good idea not to pre-purchase your snorkel gear just in case you get off the ship at CC and find there is a jellyfish problem. I know I am planning to snorkel again this November, but I will def keep my eyes and ears open---and I plan on using SafeSea just in case.

On our cruise we only saw jelly fish at the adult beach. We snorkled a little there but decided it was better to stay on the family side.

We have been to CC 4x's, all in August, and have never seen a jelly fish. Maybe it has something to do with the time of the year.

So apparently there was a lot of jelly fish in February.

Anyone who just came back from the Feb cruise can confirm please? COz' we are going in 2 weeks. :(((((((

We were there on Feb. 6th, and didn't see a single one, nor did we hear of anyone getting stung by one...:D

Spent the day in the water at CC on the 2/7 Magic sailing (2/13 on CC)and no jellyfish to be seen. Another of our cruises was also in February and no jellyfish then either.

I have sailed 10 times on DCL in all different months and never saw a jellyfish at CC.

We were at CC on Feb 20th and didn't see any Jellys. I've been scuba diving in Florida and the Caribbean for 30 years and the area is not thick in Jellyfish, but they do travel in schools, and can show up anywhere - anytime. My DD8 even found saw one while we were snorkeling at St. Thomas last year. It was about 1” across so she called him “Squishy” (we were on the “Finding Nemo” PremEAR at sea cruise). It turns out Squishy stung her, but she didn’t realize it until about an hour latter. Most small jellyfish stings are like that, you may not feel it until your skins starts to dry, and then it’s just like a small rash spot. Don’t get me wrong, some Jellyfish have a very powerful sting, but they are very rare and are very visible.

SafeSea will stop most Jelly stings, but I think it’s more uncomfortable than the sting.

Jellyfish don't travel very far on their own. They drift with the currents and can be by themselves or in groups. I think the chances of having jellyfish at CC are just random chance, related to tides and currents.

I have been stung many times in the surf in Virginia beach and Myrtle beach. It really wasn't all that painful and went away in less than an hour.

On the east coast the water is not clear so you can't see the jelly fish until they brush against you. At CC you can see pretty far into the water, so it would be pretty easy to avoid them. They move really slowly on their own and they don't have any interest in stinging you, they just accidentally do it when you touch them.

We've been to Castaway 3 times and have never seen any jellyfish at either the family or adult beach. It must depend on the currents, but it doesn't seem to be a big problem.:earsboy:

We also just got back yesterday and didn't see one at CC on the adult beach either.

Just a point of clarification: sea safe does not hurt to put on. THe poster probably doesn't care for the feel of sunscreen either. They feel the same.

If you are concerned, make sure to bring some sea safe (or safe sea- whichever it's called). Then put it on before you put on your swimsuit. Be sure to cover your entire body.

The bottles are pretty small, so you may need multiple bottles for your family.

I'm so glad you posted this, twinstars. We're leaving on Thursday and I was getting really concerned for my twin little ones.

And thanks for clarifying, rabbit, about the safesea. I was wondering why I hadn't heard that it was an uncomfortbale lotion to put on and it got me worried, too!

apparantly a worrywart,
Sherri :)

The best description for safe sea lotion is elmers glue - hard to spread all over (and of course, unlike sunscreen, I mean all over)
My family and I just decided to brave the sea lice and jellies and were fine...of course, had we been stung the story would be "glue, sweet glue"

Sorry, but we were on Magic this past July 26 through Aug 2 and saw many jellyfish at the family beach. We would have been at CC on Aug. 1, so I'd say that time of year isn't necessarily "safe from jellyfish" either. DS 9 got stung once while snorkeling, not pleasant. We were not wearing the sea safe product, so don't know if that would have helped. Did not go to the adult beach so don't know if they were there as well.

jrabbit, you’re right. SafeSea does not hurt to put on, just uncomfortable, (and yes I also don’t like sunscreen. Wow, you know a lot about me!)

professorandmom is right also. SafeSea is VERY uncomfortable (at least to me) and you are suppose to cover your entire body with it.

My Dad and I were on the Wonder 2/8 sailing. When we were at the snorkel area of CC, there were 3 people that we saw who were going for first aid for jellyfish stings. We didn't see any jelly fish, but they can be hard to spot.

I received my order of Safe Sea today from Drugstore.com. Wow that was fast. I ordered the kind with SPF30 protection as well. I tried it out and the consistency was really no different than any other sunblock I have seen. It smells pretty nice, too.

Hi,

We were just on the 2/19 Wonder Cruise and were at CC on the 21st. We did not see or hear of any jellyfish at all and in fact my husband and I snorkeled for a couple of hours in the afternoon and had a great time, as did at least 20 others around us. The family beach was full all day with people in the water and everyone seemed to be having fun. At the adult beach paople were swimming and snorkeling and nothing seemed amiss there either.

In fact, I had to take my son down to the First Aid office right at 4:30pm to get checked for a medication reaction and there were only two other people there getting medicine for motion sickness to use when we departed. We were only there for 10 minutes but that is all we saw and I would think that if 1 in 4 people got stung and the office didn't open until 4:30pm that people would be lined up to get relief.

If there are jellyfish when you go (for some reason) remeber that after playing on the beach the pool on the ship is open and the kids can swim there after, if you are worried. My boys swam a little at CC and then went back to the pool, which they said was more fun with the slide!

This was our first cruise and we had the time of our lives. We all had so much fun that we are going again in two years on a 7 day and can't wait! We would go sooner, but I can't get the time off of college until then in the winter (and my DH won't go any other time of year since we are trying to escape the cold).

Have a great time!!
