Does anyone know if the DVC CL room are open yet? I was waitlisted for one, and then a rep just canceled it telling me they weren't open till December or so....

I will call DVC later, but was just wondering if anyone had first hand experience.

Thanks!

The "people pen" view that I know of is toward the middle/end of Zebra trail, on the Uzima Savannah side of the trail. I think there's also one SOMEWHERE down Kudo trail, too...but I've not seen that one personally.

Zebras and Giraffes are most definitely on Arusha Savannah....or were last time we were there. Not sure about the other 2 savannahs.

There's a people pen on the Kudu Trail too. I think we were on the Sunset Savannah (does that sound right? maybe it was Sunrise Savannah? Wait, am I completely making that name up? It doesn't sound "exotic" enough.)

Anyway, about 1/2 way down Kudu, hang a left at the elevator bank, rooms on the left face out over that (name to be confirmed) Savannah and the people pen. But like I said, for me it was OK becuase I paid for a parking lot view!
And there were LOTS of giraffes on that part of the Kudu Trail (no zebras) as well as other animals.

I guess it would have helped if I had my map and viewing guide handy before I started typing!

...it IS Sunset Savannah....there are no giraffe there, but plenty of ostriches....

We were on the dining plan, so dinner was 2 credits each. We had lamb patis and the kalamata olive flatbread for appetizers and each had a really great wine but can't remember what they were. Then DH had fish--halibut, maybe? I can't remember. I wouldn't normally order fish, but this was REALLY tasty. I had curry shrimp--also yummy. Dessert was cheesecake for DH and the pistachio creme brulee :cloud9: for me. We just asked the waiter to recommend wines with each course and paid for them separately. I can find out the total when I find the bill for that night. I think it was $70ish for 6 glasses of wine. Not bad, really. I will get the receipts from DH. Denise

Mmmm, I love Curry Shrimp, and DH is a total cheesecake lover. We will have to try the different wines with each course. No big deal about the total cost, we are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary so we are splurging that particular evening. Thanks again for the info,:thumbsup2 and if you think of any other suggestions or tips for our stay at the AKL, please share.

Value and CL rooms open Dec 2nd, officially.

Maybe I was facing a different Savannah then, because the pics I posted were from my balcony

...or someone better tell those Giraffe they're in the wrong place :confused3

My DH, DS and I are heading back to AKL for a 3 day stay the weekend after Thanksgiving. We stayed a couple of values during the year and decided to come back to AKL. (we loved the beds and I am craving zebra domes)

Anyone recently return with a progress report on the construction. I didn't put in a request for a specific section yet as I wanted to put feelers out there to see what section to avoid.

Thanks for your help!!:)

Whoa! Now that sounds very romantic!

Being a newbie to AKL, do they sell bottles of wine at the Mara? Or would I buy it from Jiko/Boma?

We're looking forward to our first stay at AKV! Although we've not been yet, DH and I enjoy a glass of wine in the evening after the kids are in bed. I was told that the Zawadi Marketplace shop at the AKL has a nice selection of South African wines (by the bottle) that you can purchase. Hopefully someone can confirm!

I second that! That's a way nicer spa area, and very secluded. I never saw any kids there at all, unlike the spas that's behind the slide.

They sell wine both at the Mara and in Zawadi marketplace. I think if you go to Victoria Falls, you can pick up a bottle there, too. Bring a corkscrew for your room if that's your intent or have them open it at the bar. I've heard they'll do that. I believe Room service might also deliver, but have not confirmed that.

Denise

PS--We thought we'd enjoy a glass on the balcony nightly, but it just never happened. We did, however enjoy wines selected by our waiter at Jiko and they were FABULOUS! Maybe ask for a recommendation there.

WoodysRoundup,
Since you'll be staying in an AKV, there'll be a corkscrew in your villa (if not, they'll bring one, since those are part of the villa supplies). :thumbsup2

Have a wonderful time. :goodvibes We're looking forward to our first trip to that home in January. :woohoo:

Can't wait to read your report. :)

Oops.............just noticed your signature; we may be there before you (or even at the same time).

Now that you mention Zawadi Marketplace I remember reading a post way back at the very beginning of this thread that someone had said the wines were available there. Thanks!

This is definitely good to know!

I think we are definitely prepared for a romantic evening with all the info that everyone has shared (and I won't forget the corkscrew!). And I was also hoping we could take some time and sit out on the balcony with a glass of wine. I will try to put forth the effort, I know getting back from the parks we're always wiped out and ready to just head to bed. Although this visit we are trying not to be so commando and enjoy our time at the resort.

Thanks again everyone!!!:thumbsup2

One of the spas was great, the other I didn't like as much. Go to the one on the bar side of the pool instead of the one on the slide side.

Denise, thanks for the review, great to hear that you had such a good time!

Can you explain why the one spa was so much better? When we stayed there, I only ever was in this spa as it was on "our" side of the pool, what's wrong with the other one?

I can confirm, see for yourself:

I think I read somewhere that Zawadi actually increased its food offerings considering that they are now a DVC resort, so there might even be a bigger selection now?
