Does anyone have any info on the construction at AKL? We currently have ressies at OKW for 9/29-10/7 but am thinking of switching to AKL or Poly. We would really like to try AKL but am concerned w/the construction. We have 3 kids ages 8,5&2 and they love animals - we would pay for a savannah view. I love the pics of the pool - looks so inviting!

Thanks for any info.

We returned home late last night from a 10 day WDW stay. We were at AKL CL 5/30-6/1. Here's where the construction stood then: All 6th floor rooms are closed, but construction hasn't started. The only 5th floor rooms open are Kudu. The 5th floor lobby rooms, Ostrich Trail, Giraffe Trail and Zebra Trail rooms are all closed. 5th floor on Zebra Trail is completely blocked off and that's where the construction was on the days we were there. The day we were at the pool, we could hear lots of noise; not sure how bad it was in the rooms because we were on the 5th floor Kudu Trail (room 5241).

From my conversations with AKL CM's, they admit that when this construction first got underway, there was lots of confusion and some very unhappy guests. They feel they have a much better handle on things now and from what I saw, I have to agree. They are not booking to capacity, leaving rooms available should guests have a problem with their room and need to be moved.

Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to book AKL again - but I don't have any young children who need to nap (although my teenager wants to!! :lmao:)

I believe as long as you are aware of the construction and the possibility that, during the day, you might hear noise - request a room "away from the construction" and you should be fine! :thumbsup2

From reports today, it sure sounds like they are ahead of schedule. The report coming from DVC MS is that concierge rooms, once projected to be ready in May of '08, will actually be on line (along with some value units...which were also not projected to be ready til May of '08), will be ready by Dec 1st, 07. From your report about what is, and isnt', open.....it looks like they're running ahead...or maybe things have changed and they'll do the Kudo trail conversion last, instead.

Thanks for the update. We might wait until our next trip to stay at the AKL. Wait until the construction is over and maybe stay in a villa!!! I love the pics of this resort.

I had a great conversation with Jack in the 6th floor lounge and he said many of those rooms had "just" been closed and that Kudu was supposed to have been closed by the time of our stay, but plans were revised. When you think about it, keeping Kudu open keeps the most savannah view rooms available and unaffected while the other 3 trails are being worked on. :thumbsup2

Hopefully, they stay on track and keep running ahead of schedule! :woohoo:

On the construction, I just have to had that we were first assigned a second floor room at the absolute end of the Kudu trail (room 2363). We had paid for savannah view, but there was only about 20 feet of grass and then we had a GREAT view of construction vehicles, fences, dirt piles, etc. :) We asked to be moved.

The room itself was fine, and I didn't hear any noise, even at 1:00 in the afternoon, but I don't think that they should still have been counting it as a savannah view. That said, they moved us with no fuss or questions. So, I guess I would say that if you go, be sure to ask about the view as well as the noise, or worrying about what floors are closed.

I thought they "re-classified" most of those rooms to Standard. :confused3 Guess they missed a few. I'm glad to hear it was no problem changing rooms; the CMs are usually very helpful that way! :goodvibes

You made a good point: request "away from construction noise AND a *real* Savannah view"! ;)

I wouldn't count AKL out because of construction. We got back on the 27th after a 9 day stay and if I wasn't fully aware of construction before arrival I wouldn't have even known it at all. We spent every afternoon back at the resort napping and 2 break days taking advantage of the activities and relaxing and not once did I hear anything, see anything, or smell dust, etc.

Also, I had requested Arusha savanna because I was concerned of the construction and was disappointed, at first, when I didn't get it. When I got to my Sunset Savanna room that immediately went away.

Read my review of our stay it includes all level of details and some pics as well.

Hi Gang

Just wondering about AKL... We are used to the Epcot area with the Boardwalk. On our last trip we had an awesome dinner at Jiko. Excellent food. However, I'm curious what meal options are available at AKL? Is it easy to get to restaurants outside of AKL without a car?

Thanks
A.

:woohoo: was able to snag one of the savannah view studios for 1 night before our cruise in Dec.

Have never even visited the lodge; will read thru this thread when I have a chance.

Q: I'm told the room is in the jambo house:confused: . Looking @ resort map i don't see that name referenced; wonder where we'll be

DVC CM did say i couldn't request a specific savannah and indicated that there would be construction noises. I laughingly asked if it would be 24-7 noise, she said she couldn't guarantee what the work hours are:scared1: . I'm going out on a limb but; think they wouldn't work during the 'midnight shift'.:rolleyes1 i hope

I would imagine jambo house would be the existing building; 5th & 6th floors. The new DVC building won't be ready until 2009 (I believe). I wonder what the new building will be named? Pilferk, do you know? :)

As far as the construction, I wouldn't worry. They do work longer than 9 to 5 hours, but we noticed they were gone before 7 pm and I don't think they started much before 8 am (at least not with the noisy stuff!) I can understand their not guaranteeing hours because there might be times when they have to work odd hours to stay on schedule. Congratulations on getting the reservation! :yay: It'll be fun to hear everyone's reviews. The first DVC trips start in July, right?! :woohoo:

yes, beginning early in July.

dh sez 'expensive & more expensive' lol

the complex is Kidani Village, poolscape to be Samawati Springs, Uwania Camp interactive water play area & new restaurant Sanaa.

i'm just confused as to the phrase jambo house - i thought the different areas of AK were designated by the savannah they were near; or am i mistaken.

looks like a big place, don't want to get lost:)

 It is good-sized, but it is really easy to find your way around! Here's the link to the resort map:

From the sounds of the construction, Zebra Trail will open first for DVC. You'll be near the pool & restaurants. :)

Thanks for the update on the construction status. I'm still very nervous about our pool view for Sept, since it appears that can only be Zebra or Giraffe trail, where the construction is! We originally were set for WL, but switched to AKL since we loved it last time, but now I'm scared about this. Maybe they'll be done with those rooms by September???? We haven't been on vacation in 3 years, so I surely don't want it to be ruined with construction noise, etc.........
I do appreciate the updates though! Thanks!

:woohoo:

Jambo house is the current (existing) AKL building.

Kidani Village is the "new" construction slated to open in phases starting in '09.

I have a quick question, has any one stayed in a room with a day bed? and if so is there a trundle bed underneath the day bed? TIA:thumbsup2

Yes we have and no there isn't a trundle bed underneath. It's not even really a day bed, it's sort of like you pull the bottom out and the top falls flat.

thanks! didn't know the existing lodge was jambo house; better drag out the UO & read up:thumbsup2

HEY!!! I hear ya ~ I'm planning for Feb. and I'll start seriously watching in Aug. and then on for any good deals!!! We've pretty much decided on the lodge for the beginning then switching over to the Poly for the end. Are your mom & sister going with you?? Oh, I wanted to ask you about the tea ~ my Dsis & family are coming and I'd like to do the tea with her. Any info would be great!!

How's the "puppy" ~ I'm sure way past the puppy stage!!!

Hey Wendy :goodvibes If good AP rates come out for September I hope to spend some of my stay at AKL:goodvibes I have been reading the thread, but not doing much posting because I'm in AKL withdrawal since last fall:sad2:
